GC 10: Kinect functionality for new Harry Potter revealed photo

[Update: Our originally story had mentioned a PlayStation Move-supported version of Deathly Hallows; this was incorrect. Electronic Arts has confirmed that the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of the game will not support Move. Sorry for any confusion.]

At Electronic Arts press conference today at gamescom, the publisher showed off for the first time how Kinect will work with the Xbox 360 version of the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I.

Actors James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasely from the Harry Potter films) came on stage for a live demonstration of the game's "Challenge" mode, which will utilized the motion-sensing camera. The Phelps' took on the roles of Harry and Ron as they fought off death eaters and snatchers using magic spells, activated with hand gestures. It was hard to get a sense of how spell types were activated, but pointing at the screen appeared to fire off a melee attack; pushing out both hands at once seemed to push back enemies.

As for controlling the movements of the on-screen characters, everything appeared to be on rails; the computer was controller their movements through the environments while the players stood in place, using their hands to perform the defensive and offensive attacks.

Deathly Hallows Part I is out this November.

Can Kinect see a "wand" or surrogate wand in your hand as you play? Isn't that part of the appeal of playing a wizard?

sorry but a ps3 wand thing would feel a lot better than using my hands for tracking. rip off game or not. I'm sure Harry Potter will have identical functionality for move.

How could they not use the voice recognition!? It doesn’t feel right unless you shout “EXPELLIARMUS!”

The IGN interview with the game designer says this is Kinect only and there are no plans for PS3 Move support.

I though Kinect could recognise objects, I guess not then.

Id rather play this than another shitty platformer (Lego Harry Potter not included in this generalization).

As a huge Harry Potter fan, no thanks. I might be interested in trying the Move/Wii version, though.

Kinect, but not Move? That's as stupid a move as the new Star Wars game using Kinect.

You can hold objects while using Kinect I think Microsoft has a mandate of no demos of people holding objects since they want consumers to understand this is a controller-free device. It makes sense because if you put anything in the people's hands the mainstream media will just dismiss Kinect as a Wii-wanabee and won't think of Kinect as something new.
