GC 09: PSP Apps finally revealed, branded PSP Minis photo

We've heard rumors about them for a while, but now it's finally been revealed that the Sony PSP is getting its answer to "Apps." These freshly dubbed PSP Minis are small, 100MB games that take advantage of smaller development costs to provide quick, bite-sized games.

The service launches on October 1, and will have fifteen games when it debuts, with a whole FIFTY planned for 2009. Among the confirmed games are Tetris, Fieldrunners, Hero of Sparta and MiniGore. The latter two are iPhone games, meaning that Apple's titles are going multiplatform. Pretty hot news.

This has instantly made the PSP ten times more exciting to me. It has to be better than DSiWare, for sure.

Damn it! I wish I had known Hero Of Sparta was coming to PSP before I bought it for my iPhone. It is an awesome game, but I would rather play it with buttons than a touch-screen.

Better than DSi ware? No, why? Because the controls suck. And where will the good first party games be? They won't exist. Sorry, but Sony will NEVER beat Nintendo in controls or games, maybe graphics, but nothing else.

I'm curious to see what the long-overdue PSP version of Tetris will be like. Shame they couldn't give the task to Q Entertainment, the masterminds who made Gunpey fun at all.

@AlienGuy18

You are right, Sony is focusing on Digital Media/DLC. That is it for the PSPGO. You might as well get an iphone which is better than a PSP, even though the iphone doesn't have many first party games,it is just better and basically free.

The DSi can do it because every Nintendo game is fun, and there are lots of Nintendo games along with third part games.

Still doesn't impress me. I think the PSP has just turned me off some much, and conversly the iPhone has turned me on so much, I couldn't see myself shelling out for 3 months of fun like the PSP I got was. It basically went from a fun handheld to a clunky mobile browser for me.

Plus I like the ability to use my phones 3G. I know the PSPgo isn't meant to compete with the iPhone but while we're comparing the two...

That's what I thought. THESE are the $1, $2, and $5 games. I knew they couldn't be full PSP titles.

This is great for someone who doesn't want to spend $100 a month on a cell phone bill and therefore can't afford an iphone. Thx, Sony.

Thank God, I was starting to think I might have to buy an iPhone - which is something I really, REALLY didn't want to have to do...

Well, what about the iPod Touch? They're more or less the same price, have the same features (games, music, movies). Sure, I don't like to compare things either, but the similarities are obviously there. How is the PSPgo not competing with the iPhone? I'm glad that these apps aren't calculators like on the DSi, but every game shown here can be played my iPhone. Show me something fresh, like a Metal Gear mobile game that isn't Duck Hunt, then I'll be interested. That, and the fact that I highly doubt Sony will have an option to offer these for free, unlike a lot of surprisingly good free iPhone apps.

Fieldrunners is an iPhone game too (and a pretty darn good one at that) and Tetris is available too.

As someone who just bought Hero of Sparta, I can say that the Go! and the Appstore are only 'kind-of' competing. If you want Hero of Sparta or a similar game, and have a choice of platform, you'd be an idiot to go for the iPhone over the Go!. Meanwhile, I'll stick to my iPod Touch for the myriad of great Tower Defense games on the Appstore, blow using a thumbstick of D-pad for them. The platforms are different enough that even with similar products, its hard to directly compare them and make any meaningful overall choice.

I'm hesitant to buy an iPod touch as well chiefly because I hate iPods and I've never had an Apple product (besides a Mac) that hasn't broken after a few months use.

If they intend to at all compete with the I-phone, they have to seve up some free games at least. I could understand paying for a simple yet lengthy game for the Mini, but the Burn Zombie Burn minigame I saw, that is not worth any money at all. I hope Sony heeds the call soon before they make a stupid decision. But then again, selling the PSP Go with nothing but the system was stupid as well....
