It was inevitable, but now it’s confirmed; Fable III is happening.
Peter Molyneux wasted little time at Microsoft’s gamescom press conference before announcing the third title in the RPG franchise. The Lionhead Studios boss said a dated mechanic bogs down the original two titles. A mechanic, he teased, that has been removed from this iteration. Telling those in attendance he wouldn’t reveal what the piece was quite yet, the man moved into a few details.
Fable III follows the last bit of Fable II downloadable content. In Fable III, players will become a king or a queen of all of Albion. Molyneux stresses that he wants people to feel the weight of the crown, to experience what it’s like to be a leader. He then went on to explain that players will need to gather followers and do the things rulers do like taxing (with a moral twist, of course), which makes that series of Lionhead splash pages make that much more sense.
Not all is revealed, of course, but we’ll probably be hearing quite a bit more about the promise-filled title in the near future, as it hits at some point (not early) in 2010. If you want a few more precious details, check out Eurogamer's preview. Before you do, let me ask -- Fable III, folks: yay or nay?
[Update: Now with more trailer. Check it out.]

I just cannot be excited for this after how bad 2 was.
As for the bogged down mechanic, I'm guessing a full open world this time?
Oh, and it'll use Natal.
@phantomile
Fable games aren't bad but they are VERY overhyped. If I had played them not expecting them to rock my balls off I probably would have liked them better. Maybe they'll get things right this time and stop pretending they're God's gift to video games.
... And for Fable 3.
Year after year he makes claims that the next game he releases is equivelant to the second coming, and year after year it fails to deliver - then after all the hype and sales he admits he was a bit wrong.
Fable 2 being the most recent farce - a game that was given 9's and 10's, but in reality was such an average game that the mind boggles.
I don't mind a game having a few flaws (every game had them), just stop with all the bullshitting.
It's too soon after Fable 2, and Molyneux is already overhyping the damn thing. Nay...
I'm pretty damn excited about this. Fable was the best RPG (non-J-RPG) I've played in the last couple of console generations and Fable II would have been right up there too if your combat options had been a bit more balanced. Fable III, hype be damned, will be one of the few games I'll pre-order ASAP.
Games might not live up to the hype, but who hypes their games like Peter??
I didnt get Fable 2 at launch because all I heard coming into it was how great Peter Molyneaux said it was going to be, which just sent me back to the original let down.
As GoldenGamerXero said, he sells the game far too much, and so it is a let down, even if up to a playable standard. If he just told me what the game (actually) did, not how fucking revolutionary the whole thing would be if he could do all that he wanted, I might be interested.
If Molyneux wants to drop another generic fantasy hack and slash rpg by all means he can. I know it will sell and the fan boys will rave, but for someone who talks about how games needs changes he sure hasn't made much progress.
I'll try out fable 2:GOTY edition first and then decide later.
If it is more liek Fable II II I will not be interested.
You could make it four if you count Black & White 1 & 2, which I do.
@Ace Flibble
Not to offend but Fable did nothing stellar, not living up to hype is one thing it's quite another to promise the Moon and deliver a rock. It was a competent game but that's all. If you want to see what 'Fable done right' is then I suggest you check out Gothic 1, 2 and Ultima 7.
Ignoring the whole subjectivity of "fun," the problem is that for many they just simply weren't any fun at all. Playing through F2 I found very little fun - pretty much everything you could do wasn't anything special: mini-games to earn money or impress townsfolk? Boring as hell. Finding a husband/wife? Far too simplistic, meaningless, and we're suppose to accept these hags as wives? Fighting enemies? Piss-poor basic combat that didn't even require the least bit of thought.
I could just as easily say that anyone who did like F1 and 2 needs to put down the crack pipe because they played two games that were truly not any fun.
What *was* fun about either one?
However, is the release really 2010? Isn't that a little quick, considering the development time of the last two Fables, and that this one will (presumably) have a completely different kind of game mechanic?
So, with that said, I think I won't allow myself to get excited for this at the moment.
I've enjoyed the Fable series for being different, and sometimes standing in stark opposition to expectation. The last battle of 2 was a suprise. But, it wasn't just another "LOOK AT ME I AM A GOD WITH THREE DIFFERENT STAGES OF BATTLE ARRRRR" end fight. It was more about running this destiny that's been laid out for you and claiming your "reward", both in your chances for vengeance and in fulfillment of your Spire wish.
Anyway... looking forward to Fable III, less so if it uses extensive Natal support (which, yeah, it probably will). Yay until proven Nay.
Honestly, I'm just hyped already, without hearing a lot of the infamous Molyneux hyperbole. I never thought Fable III would be announced so soon after II.
That's because molyneux promises the moon ,the stars, the sun, and half a galaxy in his games and it never happens.
I haven't played enough of the fable series to get really indepth about it but they seem like decent games with a few flaws, but that mans mouth writes a check even the best games have a hard time cashing, let alone one that's just decent.
I'm always looking foward to what Molyneaux will manage to make next, it may not be exactly his vision but its rarely uninteresting.
My opinion on a new Fable? Too soon.
Fable 2 was my first Fable, and it was definitely different. I got the feeling that all the Fable story and dialogue was lost in the lore that wasn't really told interestingly enough to me to care, even though it sounded interesting.
And the usual "Good is good, evil is evil" doesn't count.
A lot of games, as a example of a hyped as fuck game, Brawl...
It wasn't the game of the year, for sure. But it was a fun game with a decent little story, a great looking game world and a lot of things to do. I'll be looking forward to the third one.
I'll play three, and probably enjoy it, so I'm kind of excited.
I actually enjoyed the original game, and thought it was easily one of the best titles on the Xbox, but Fable 2 suffered from the issues of dumbed down combat, especially when it came to Magic, and a short, and bad storyline (I didn't like the ending to the game.)
Its too soon for a Fable 3. Plus the story of this one isn't sounding that good.
This and Fable II GOTY edition are making my pants burst!
Now i'm finally going to put the King title in use. I bet we'll have to stop rebellions(remember the teaser site).
