GC 09: Lionhead takes Fable II 'Episodic' photo

In a bit of a surprising and puzzling announcement, Peter Molyneux and Lionhead have announced that Fable II -- yes, the game that was released last October -- is going episodic.

Called Fable II Episodic, Fable II will be broken up into five chapters, with each of the chapters said to have a "natural break." The first chapter will be free to download; after the completion of the chapter, players will get the option to purchase the next chapter or the rest of the game. All of this happens in-game; there's no need to navigate Marketplace menus or anything like that to continue play.

Fable II Episodic will be available on September 29, and will be fully compatible with "Knothole Island" and "See the Future." Right now, there's no details on pricing of the four paid episodes; we'll update as we hear more.

What? Why? Is this the announcement that they wanted to make? God dammit, this would be extremely disappointing if that was the case. Why wouldn't someone just buy the game instead?

Not to steal Brad's thunder, but they also announced some game called.. Fable III, is it? Details on that are forthcoming. Be patient.

This actually seems like a pretty good idea. Think about it. Sure its an old game, but if this sets an example and more games do it, its almost like an extended demo, but you don't lose your progress. of course its all about implementation and pricing. If it's priced like Games on Demand, get ready to be ripped the fuck off.

...Molyneux's power hour just got weird. A touching mechanic in Fable III? Seems like he trying to make the greatest most revolutionary game ever. AGAIN. Can I touch young children?

What an original name, "Fable II: Episodic", might as well call it "Fable II: A Videogame".

It's the old shareware model from the glory days of PC gaming, be interesting to see how well it works now.

If he is going to use Natal in Fable III, he is finally going to fall so flat on his face that me might choke on his serpent tongue.

Fable II going episodic sounds like a pointless money spinner, it will be considerably cheaper to buy the game on a disc!

So, I'm confused. This isn't additional episodic content, but just the full game that you could buy new for $37, except broken up into five chunks, which hopefully won't cost 800 MS Points apiece?

Books used to be episodic. But then thye stopped, because no one liked reading a chapter every month.

'Innovation' for the sake of innovation sucks.

This was exciting until i realized it wasn't new content. Good for people that want to try the game out, but don't want to commit. interesting, but I don't need it.

I love all things Fable. I hope this is new content. I'll be all over it.

Wait, what?

I mean, this could be a neat way to sell certain games in the future but not Fable games. Theres like what, maybe 5-8 hours of story?

It would be neat to get the first part for free then be able to run around making money and junk though... It still doesnt make much sense, but kudos for trying something different.

Fable 2: Episode 1: Young ... Fable 2:Episode 2:Old ... Fable 2:Episode 3: Oh shit you just killed your dog to save the world and now you have to buy islands of shit with useless weapons that aren't as powerful as the ones you already have.

... Oh and you get a new cross dressing outfit. Grats.
