Also, Aries, tone down the defensive attitude man, that cliffy comment was so off-the-mark my head almost exploded.
And do you honestly think all straight gamers jump into online games happy as a kid in a candy store because they can now be a hateful bigot? Did you ever stop to think that a large chunk of straight gamers actually hate those people right along with you?
Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one.
It's not a matter of homophobia, but I see double standards here,I never saw another event called "Straight Gamers Convention" or something. My problem is that it tries to distinct gay people from straight people like it actually even matters. Equality is one thing, but boasting all the time and putting a label on everything is a completely other. I think if a "Straight Gamers Association" or something made straight-only events, gay people would be offended too. There shouldn't be sexual preference distinction at all in events like that. Peace.
Also i dont think this will work out if they dont get any good games.
Calling it pointless shows you're ignorant to what the real issue is.
There's already a GeekGirlCon, and nobody complains about that... though the reality is that almost no publishers or devs attend, and it seems a rather small-time affair that gets little in the way of press. As a few have noted, the success as a gaming event will likely depend on if they can get publishers and devs on board, and devs are stretched pretty thin with E3 and the various PAX events already (so no cries of "discrimination" if particular devs don't attend). Still, whether it evolves as a gaming event, or simply as a smaller venue where LBGT gamers can freely gather and celebrate a common interest - I don't see the harm... so long as the event isn't a closed event and is open to anyone who wants to attend.
If it bugs you, don't go. Gay people don't need more disapproval from random assholes.
Funny you should mention running for office. I was just thinking the same thing a few days ago. Although i doubt i would get many votes since i have an extreme hatred of children... Not to mention that i would try and push for making death by firing squad an option again. Also, i despise children.
Life isn't safe. People offend me daily. I deal with it. Isn't it enough to call it a "place where gay gamers can come hang out and discuss games"? Do we really need to inject leftist academic politics into it? What's next, "NO TRIGGERING" signs on the convention floor?
I'm no homophobe but I was thinking "pointless" myself until I read your scenario and now I get it. Thanks for the "homophobia for dummies" lesson.
A safe/comfortable place shouldn't be necessary but sadly it is, have fun guys and gals!
When you name and group people you create minorities.
what do you mean by calling someone gay? The fact they have different sexual preferences does not make them a separate group.
So my point is that this gaymercon is unnecessary, unless the attendees play different games then the rest of the community if not then its pointless, they should not be separated from everyone else.
Its just hurting the cause
The rationalization is strong in this one. You want a "straight gamer convention" you've got it. It's called Every Other Gaming Convention Ever. The convention isn't excluding anyone, no one will be turned away unless they should show up looking to cause trouble. As a straight man I have no problem with a gay-focused convention and I'm not sure why any reasonable person would. If you can't see how an event like this could be a positive thing then there's just nothing to discuss.
You don't have to like the event or the idea behind it, but bringing up the tired "where's the Straight People Convention?" only proves you don't get it at all and should probably stay out of the debate.
It's a gaming con, with multicolours and possibly games where Monica Belluci and Cristina Hendricks make out for achievements. NO ONE SHOULD BITCH ABOUT THAT AMAZING POSSIBILITY.
Again, I’m not against this, sounds like fun, but I’m just caught up in the semantics of the thing.
thanks obama
Thanks for speaking up. You nailed it (no pun intended). All the best things to you and your partner.
Hatred toward children isn't necessarily a deal breaker for me! =P And had to look it up, but Oklahoma still allows for firing squads :)
@long john, chiptoon, Misan.,et al
Thanks for the kind words. I am a LOONG time lurker, NEVER post anywhere, so kind words on this first foray (coming out?) help!
To some others -
Isn't it amazing/ironic how the comments denouncing the con so adroitly show how necessary (or welcome) it is? As others have stated, no one is excluded(as expressly stated in the announcement.) It reminds me of the kid who asks, "There's a Mother's day and a Father's day, why no Children's day?" The answer? Everyday is children's day!
And sorry for the blank/double posts - posting from a cell bites!
I don't think african american midgets deserve their own con, because everyday for them is a day of all the ladies wanting to get on them.
Only thing I wish is that they took a risk and did it in a community that was a little more risky to do it in then San Fransisco. I mean, I know its not meant to be a protest or anything, but it is -kinda- to shove it in the collective face that Gaymers are out there and have a voice too. So, I don't know.. San Fran just seems like a "too safe" choice to me.
