I'm not a member of the LGBT community, but I can say that this was easily one of the better investments I've made. Shame I'm too poor to attend.
Id love to, but I doubt I'd be able to make it to San Fran next year. I'm kinda across the country. And if I'm flying across the country, it'd be for something probably more (PAX, Comic Con, etc) unless it ends up having a lot of interesting things there.
But it'd just be nice to be there and feel represented. It means a lot that it succeeds regardless of my presence and I appreciate the event a lot.

I say good for them, although I can't imagine why they need their own venue. Aren't they just gamers like the rest of us? Perhaps they feel more comfortable meeting people that are more like them? I dunno, but good for them.
I'd be in for a tshirt or something, but trying to figure out what to do there.

As said before, pointless, and only serves to widen a gap that shouldn't exist, and that the LGBT "community" (if you want to call it that) created itself. I also don't understand why there have been three or four posts about it so far. Is a convention more important than new technology like the Oculus Rift?
This is hardly pointless. Personally, far more pointless is multiple PAX conventions or a convention totally revolving around Minecraft (as much as I enjoy the game).
To everybody being cynical about it being in San Fran, they were upfront about not really wanting it to be there, but that since it was a new endeavor and they had no idea what kind of reaction it would get, that SF would be the safest place to start things out.

Why don't we start having Female Gaming conventions, or Black people gaming conventions? Gaming is Gaming. And that's what it should be. Not about Gays who play video games, or anything else like that. The fact that there are conventions SOLELY about video games should be enough for people who like games. Further segregation just feels backwards to me.

It's there because they felt the gay community wasn't too well accepted within the games industry. If it boosts their spirits then go ahead. As long as they push it as far as "No straight fucks allowed" then I'm fine with it.

I don't care either way, but how do you not see this as useless as any of the other cons. In less you have the effeminate voice, in the case of males that is, how can I tell your gay online. Games are morphing into something than more just a distraction. Weak Sauce IMO.
Saying it's all just about the games is easy when the gaming world is dedicated to you with women with bouncing breast physics in your games, booth babes, and scantily clad alternate costumes for all the girls. Gaming is dedicated to heterosexual males.

Ok - to all of you saying that this convention is "pointless" or "meh" - please imagine this scenario...
I'm at PAX or E3 with my partner of 12 years. We are walking the convention floor, holding hands and enjoying the displays. When he kicks ass in Madden (as he is wont to do) I may pinch his butt or give him a quick peck on the cheek...
When I play the NI No rpg demo, he may laugh and give me a big ol bear hug and kiss on the neck from behind, as he knows how much I love DQ8 and this is right up my alley (no pun intended)...
Now, if we were a straight couple, no one would bat an eye. But two guys, each over 200lbs? What do you imagine the crowd reaction would be like. What would YOUR reaction be like? My guess is that some would, at best, be annoyed or, at worst, would bash us.
So excuse us if we'd like a place to enjoy our hobby without the need or pressure to be the "gay couple" in the room. I have no problem with that role (you should see us when we grocery shop!) but I certainly get why this type of gathering is not only welcome, but needed...

I'm sure they're not bigots, just idealist. That's the problem, I would love to agree that something like GaymerCon isn't necessary, I would love to say we're all gamers, but the truth is that gamers can be pretty big assholes.

"equal opportunity exploitation" - Now there's a great phrase, and it's a good point. Guess we'll have to wait and see there, it's an angle definitely worth paying some attention to.
I suppose it's more in the feel than in the substance, or I'd hope it would be. The only thing I can relate it to on a more personal level is my Lollapalooza experience. I got the chance to see my favorite band live, a band that broke up more than a decade ago, and before I would have had the chance otherwise.
But it's not usually favorable to see a band that means so much to you personally at a festival show like Lolla. For an hour and a half, it was pure euphoria, but the rest of the day I found myself surrounded by people who were, to put it delicately, douche. Not least of which, the people at the Kascade closer who looked and acted like Jersy Shore cast members, and continuously looked at me like I was an asshole for invading their space.
Nothing about it compares to seeing a musical act you like surrounded by people who were all there for the same reason. It's a stretch, but I'd imagine the feeling with Gaymercon would be the same. No difference in the actual substance, not by any substantial means anyway, but a big difference in the feel.

I was much more stoked about this before I saw the 'Sup Holmes with Anna Anthropy and listened to them talk about this. Not nearly as stoked for it as I was.
