While I personally think specialized events for groups like gay people and ethnic minorities is pointless, TO ME, I understand why they do exist.
In my mind being gay, or a minority, or anything, means nothing. It's a non-issue, they are still human and still equal.
That's me, I know that there are many, MANY people around the world where being different is an issue and that these people are Satans kids or some other moronic reason. Thus these groups have to gather together to feel some social acceptance.

I would just like to point out that in the past we believed that Anita Sarkeesian and OUYA Kickstarters were the shit, but after they got overfunded we started believing otherwise.

I personally think it is silly that people of different orientations than me want to be segregated more, but, then again, I don't align with them 100%. Being a girl 'gamer' can be frustrating, but I don't want to belong to a girl clan/guild or anything.

Good for them, but I want to see at what stretch goal they'll let people under 18 go. They claim their convention is +18 for insurance reasons, so it follows that they can solve that with enough cash (even if it may involve getting a new venue, which they said they would anyway).

That actually makes sense, fetusmilk. I do not believe they should be using the money to fund a convention as there is no end-product and it's purely for a cause. If you really want to change the way LGBT's are treated, you need to start voting in those who want that change into office and voting out the idiots who go by the Bible or their religious views. I mean, America and Islamic countries are the only ones in the entire world that give two shits about nudity, every where else they don't have a problem with it. Bigstinkernumberguy: I realize you were being facetious when you said it, but a convention about race issues in gaming would be as valid as one about gender and sexual orientation issues, and would probably be very interesting. At least to people who care about that sort of thing.
Good for them. I don't get the people criticizing the event, claiming it is discrimination. This will provide a safe and focused environment for LGBTs and supporters to do whatever gaming related discusions, events, and booths that they want. Sure there is nothing stopping a similar event being hosted at another gaming convention, but this is pretty much the same thing, except it can be larger, more focused, have more attention. What's not to love?

i just like how everyone is ignoring the fact this is a kickstarter funding a cause, which is against kickstarter rules.
Kickstarter curates the entries by hand, they don't let anybody post them up without vetting. If it's on the site it's because Kickstarter approved it directly, which is no shock given how many events and concerts and other similar things you can fund as well.
I think this thing is honestly so useless. Since when do we have to further segregate/alienate gamers? do we suddenly need a black gamer con? or how about a female gamer con? This just seems so backwards to me. Gamers are gamers, shouldn't the fact that there are already video game conventions for our industry be enough?

Don't talk about voting to achieve equality. As a minority, the votes simply don't add up. We need others to help, and that comes from increased visibility. 28 states allow employees to be fired for sexual orientation. 37 states allow employees to be fired for gender identity. So yeah, we have to band together from time to time.
What an LGBT convention will do is give game companies the message that there are LGBT people that play their games in significant numbers. Maybe they will start to include characters that we can relate to. Unfortunately, I'm still not holding my breath for a sympathetic trans character.

Do you know what it feels like to have hundreds of thousands of people mobilize to eat a chicken sandwich in protest of your relationship?

It's not really a cause, it's a project. It has an end goal, which is to put on a gaymer convention. If they were raising money for awareness for gay characters in games, or to fight homophobia, with some vague end goal, it would be a cause.

I still don't understand how people can say "Well, we need a straight convention!?" Umm I've said this before, the US is a hetero-normative society. Basically that means that most events held are 'straight conventions' unless otherwise stated.

I remember reading on the convention's Kickstarter page that they invite anyone who isn't LGBT as well. In that regard I can't see why people have an issue with it in the first place.

Its not a cause, its a convention. I think you could make that argument if they were spinning this as a non-profit affair, but its not. The money you donate isn't going towards some roll out the vote thing, its going towards the convention itself, a relatively commercial thing as most conventions tend to be.
And good for them, awareness and the success of things like this are always good.
