And to all the fuckers saying this is "unecessary": just don't go.
Fucking pricks.

In my mind being gay, or a minority, or anything, means nothing. It's a non-issue, they are still human and still equal.
That's me, I know that there are many, MANY people around the world where being different is an issue and that these people are Satans kids or some other moronic reason. Thus these groups have to gather together to feel some social acceptance.
So to that I say, good, I'm glad that people support this, though sadly the opposite happens where people financially support a company for being anti-gay.
But hey, we're humans and we're effin' retarded and the Earth can't way till we're all dead.
To see it flow freely, to see it so unabashed in its own stink. It's glorious.
To see blatant contradiction, and near psychosis on such a grand scale is truly a thing to behold.....
The biggest flaw in humans is that they never know that they don't know. As long as your common opinion can be thrown into one of two extremes, this herd will continue to be ignorant of what its real sickness is.
Our real sickness never had anything to do with sexuality, race, gender or status. The real sickness in the human mind is its inability to find the courage to say "I DO NOT KNOW".
If you are in the middle, in a state of I DON'T KNOW, you are Free, and you see the big picture and duality does not touch you.
Sadly, i see that extremes and duality has its hold on the youth so much worse than i had to deal with. I wish you all luck in your path to find a way out of your extremes and you're self imposed prisons.
Not that this convention is a scam, but we don't have much information about it and we're still not sure if it's necessary.
We all play games. Why does it matter the gender and sexual orientation of a Mario speedrunner?
I will support them and what this convention may do, hopefully it will further equality on ALL fronts, not just the LGBT community.
Prohibited uses:
No charity or cause funding. Examples of prohibited use include raising money for the Red Cross, !!!!funding an awareness campaign!!!, funding a scholarship, or promoting the donation of funds raised, or future profits, to a charity or cause.
No "fund my life" projects. Examples include projects to pay tuition or bills, go on vacation, or buy a new camera.
this sounds like a charity/ gay cause event to me.
Making it +18 excludes the people who probably suffer the most for being gay, and also makes the whole thing look sleazy.
Other people's sexual orientation isn't at the top of my "give-a-shit" list, but if we had a "straights convention" would homosexuals be the first to cry "EXCLUSION!"? The majority of gamers may be straight, but homosexuals are in no way "excluded" even by label.
On that note, where's the bisexual convention? Or the asexual convention?
Because you say so? You might not attribute any worth in relating the two things, but other people do. Therefore, it serves a purpose. There are inherent issues in the gaming community regarding the representation of LGBT individuals. Mostly the fact that, well, they aren't represented. People want an event where these issues can be broached; where they are the facilitating factors of the event.
We have shows like E3 and PAX to represent games in production, new technology, etc. This is an event that will focus on sexual orientation in regards to the medium. Just because you don't see the point in such a combination, it doesn't mean there isn't one.
By the way, for everyone saying this convention is pointless, please tell me what the point of PAX is? After all, why should gamers have a convention separate from other forms of entertainment? Aren't they just needlessly segregating themselves from the mainstream?
Oh, it's to bond over a common interest and shared experiences stemming from a similar identity? YES, I KNOW.
I'm starting a kickstarter for the ALL WHITE gaming convention, OH NO I JUST GOT RACIST UP IN HERE! Just crossed a line, can't say ALL WHITE means your a hater then!
It's an event that is focusing on LGBT issues in gaming. If that is something you don't care about then that's fine; you don't need to give a shit. But some people DO care about those two things. Just because you think it's worthless, that doesn't mean it is objectively so.
Yes, you think it's a stupid idea. But again, that does not make it so. You're being arrogant and condescending by not accepting that this is important to people who don't share your view.
I live in NYC, but I live in the Bronx amongst the muggles. I don't live in Chelsea or the West Village, because I don't want to hide. But sometimes I need to go commiserate with other people who get slurs shouted at them from passing cars, who have to listen to people call them pedophiles, who get occasionally spit at on the subway.
Don't talk about voting to achieve equality. As a minority, the votes simply don't add up. We need others to help, and that comes from increased visibility. 28 states allow employees to be fired for sexual orientation. 37 states allow employees to be fired for gender identity. So yeah, we have to band together from time to time.
What an LGBT convention will do is give game companies the message that there are LGBT people that play their games in significant numbers. Maybe they will start to include characters that we can relate to. Unfortunately, I'm still not holding my breath for a sympathetic trans character.
What straight people don't understand is that often LGBT people feel like all of society is against them. A gay relationship is still an oddity and a novelty in video games, besides the fact that it is the normal type of relationship for 5-10% of the population. When straight people go out of their way to marvel at 2 boys kissing in a game or laugh at the ridiculousness of a brief crossdressing moment, LGBT people feel the marginalization and ridicule personally. Do you know what it feels like to have hundreds of thousands of people mobilize to eat a chicken sandwich in protest of your relationship?
So, you still don't understand? Deal with it. No one was asking your permission anyway.
I'm starting a kickstarter for the ALL WHITE gaming convention, OH NO I JUST GOT RACIST UP IN HERE! Just crossed a line, can't say ALL WHITE means your a hater then!
Have you reported them, then? It's funding the creation of a convention, whether or not that means it is a 'cause' is up to kickstarter to decide. It is a little shady, but telling destructoid and not KS themselves isn't gonna solve anything, is it?
It's not really a cause, it's a project. It has an end goal, which is to put on a gaymer convention. If they were raising money for awareness for gay characters in games, or to fight homophobia, with some vague end goal, it would be a cause.
You are being called a bigot and a homophobe, because you are angry at something that:
a) has nothing to do with you
b) hurts you in no way
c) is upsetting simply because it is LGBT centric
Like I said, no one is asking for your permission. Do you think thay should have to?
I don't know what is funnier: the fact that you don't get that "muggles" was a joke, or that you think it is the new straight slur.
The only "point" you made was that it was "pointless." And yes, LGBT people DO need to be visible to affect change. How would anyone know change was necessary without that?
Besides, if we have to look at pictures of your recent spawn, you can deal with hearing about our boyfriend or girlfriend or hearing stories about my days as a paperboy.
>> >> If you don't understand the concept of hetero-normativity within a , then I really don't think you should engage in discussions involving LGBT culture. << <<
@bigstinker
Its called Gaymercon because its a convention focusing on LGBT Culture, not necessarrily just LGBT issues.
I remember reading on the convention's Kickstarter page that they invite anyone who isn't LGBT as well. In that regard I can't see why people have an issue with it in the first place.
Its not a cause, its a convention. I think you could make that argument if they were spinning this as a non-profit affair, but its not. The money you donate isn't going towards some roll out the vote thing, its going towards the convention itself, a relatively commercial thing as most conventions tend to be.
And good for them, awareness and the success of things like this are always good.
I can't see why either. Its daunting, really.
@bigstinker
So your argument is, that because it's open to everyone, it possibly can't be focused around one subject? I'm sorry but that makes no sense to me. It's open to everyone because there are heterosexual people out there who don't mind discoursing or engaging in LGBT culture.
I agree, there are little details that have yet to be touched upon. I just don't see how that motivates you to try and berate a convention that is clearly wanted by enough people to bring a community and the culture surrounding that community, together.
