Usually, WoW players need to invent an excuse as to why they've never been with a woman, but now they have a perfectly legitimate reason. It's Pride Month in the USA, and that means World of Warcraft once again held a mirror to the real world and enjoyed its 5th annual Pride march on the Proudmoore server. A gay time was definitely had by all.
The march was attended by what have to be some of the best-named guilds in the world: Go Girl! (Escorted by Dykes on Bikes), Proposition Taint, The Real Houseboys of Silvermoon City, Willy Wankers and The Chocolate (Cake) Factory, Bears in the Woods, Spider Pride, Gordok Ogre Float, Battlebots, Priests with Pom Poms, The Bunny Float, Proudmoore Divas and Seksi Sehkurridy complements of War Taint.
Sounds like it was a fun event, with nude duels, an "Azeroth's Next Top Model" contest and a dance party. It's just a shame that those organizing it didn't publicize it more, which is why the Internet is only just talking about the thing. Still, there is a video, so hit the jump to check it out.

I'd like to see them try it! Gay Bash is on a 7 second global cooldown (5 seconds with the talent) along with Hateful Slur. Considering Love Pride is instacast and Fabulous Flare has a chain-lightening effect, I doubt even 3 anti-fags, a death-knight and priest could last very long in PvP.
Niero just updated twitter with this message last night (or morning - the time diff confuses me :P)....

Wow...I'm not even sure what to say to this. I'm more insulted by the fact that these or any people are doing a virtual get-together as their avatars in WoW under any circumstances at all than all of the omgz gay people retarded comments in this thread...so, really - its a toss-up.
@AClockWorkMelon Wow, calm down dude. I didn't mean to misrepresent your lifestyle choices and your hot female/rabbit hybrid character in Home. I happen to be an 'omg' gay gamer and I feel like this WoW thing only invites mockery of an already put upon minority in a really important time of our actual, IRL existence. I could RAAAGE about it and I certainly have before - you know, when its actually important - like for example, when discussing the actual politics and cultural norms/attitudes of the time - but right now I'm just facepalming at these people and their WoW nerdiness. That's the joke. I'm sorry, but I don't see how dancing around in a virtual environment as a dark elfmage with some sort of orc/animal mix is going to help anyone be taken seriously. Get over yourself, angry.
it doesn't help, Rigby. but Gay pride isn't just about raising awareness. not every collective gay action has to be political. gay pride is about, get this; being proud.
have you ever been to a gay rodeo? i don't think anything else would invite mockery more than watching two men wrestle a goat into panties or big hairy men participating in drag-races... in full drag. but who cares they're alot of fun for that exact reason; taking the piss out of all that macho, manly bullshit and having a good time.
As someone who's gay, I think gay pride parades and stuff, much less in a VIDEO GAME is just silly and ridiculous. It's just a sexuality people, get over your ego's and stop making yourself look like a sex crazed bimbo (unless you really are one) :P
I've always had something of a problem with physical Pride Fest parades (no, this is not flamebait, nor am I expressing any opinions regarding homosexuality), as I've personally found sexuality and orientation to be somewhat removed from identity. It seems a silly thing to be celebrated - who a person cares to fuck - and for that to be present in virtual environments kinda' irks me.
@Rigby: You seem super butt-hurt over this, and not in the good sense. :D
@Sentry: Is it any more silly than other pride festivals out there? St. Paddy's day? Oktoberfest? Do you really not have enough going on in your personal life to be "irked" by gay-owned avatars dancing around in a virtual world?
@KorJax: You should be thankful that there are others are willing to take up the mantle for things you're uncomfortable with, or uninterested in, doing yourself. :)
If folks want to express themselves in this manner, who cares? More power to them. It's not personally affecting you, so stop being such crybabies!
Batty - I'm not arguing that celebrating qualities of identity is silly. St Patrick's Day and Oktoberfest are celebrations of cultural identity, and I absolutely have no problem with them because it makes absolute sense to me for a person to strongly identify with their homeland or heritage. More or less "silly" isn't really an argument I'm prepared to make, because most modern-day holidays or festivals are perversions as compared against the original historical elements that inspired them in the first place.
No, what I was saying is that I feel sexual orientation is far less indicative of identity traits than, say, personal tastes or philosophical/sociopolitical leanings or accomplishments.
Perhaps this is a bigger conversation than a comment box. I think I'll write something to make my argument clear.
As for your accusation that being irked by something is an active decision I make, based solely on how bored I am, well that's just silly and I think you're adorable.
I think Gay culture is just as valid as any other cultural identity. Why is one type of identification more "valid" than another type? And who decides this?
"No, what I was saying is that I feel sexual orientation is far less indicative of identity traits than, say, personal tastes or philosophical/sociopolitical leanings or accomplishments."
Why? Being a heterosexual, I would rank my sexual orientation as being a pretty darn important part of my identity traits. I'm not convinced that there is a hierarchy of what is and isn't so important. Everything you do shapes the kind of person you are.
And I am just trying to figure out why you would be 'irked' - the best word I could come up with, even if I didn't care for what I was seeing, would be "ambivalent."
Scratching your fingernails on a chalk board, now that irks me! :)
damn! wish i played on that server, would've loved to see this - so goddamned sick of all the (casual or not) homophobia in WoW, it'd be nice to see gay players actually coming out like this!
I was being sarcastic, but I'm just saying that its kind of lame to be like "OMG ORC GAY PRIDE LOLOLZ I'M GAY AND PROUD AND ALSO IM AN ORC LEVEL 85!@"
I mean, I'm sorry I don't want some rather inconsequential part of my identity to automatically group me in with something akin to furries, who we all know are furries simply because accepting that they're OMG GAY is difficult, so if they're also a fox with three tails then its okay! :) :) :) Yayyy!
Except the whole besitality part that comes with furries. I can't say I understand that very well.
@MotoRobo - Thank you so much for putting it so succinctly. All of the attachments that the media has put upon gay culture don't speak for all of us and I'm weary of having that attachment. It was very difficult for me to come out primarily because I was convinced I'd have to act or be a certain way just because I was physiologically attracted to other men. Now that I've been partnered for over four years and I live in a city (San Francisco) that's pretty accepting/don't care about who I choose to live my life with, I've really gotten irritated at the continual way the media portrays homosexuality - my family and friends understand it better because they know me. I think the idea of 'gay culture' itself is a little nebulous and abstract, but that's another matter entirely.
Batty - "I think Gay culture is just as valid as any other cultural identity. Why is one type of identification more "valid" than another type? And who decides this?"
Again, you misinterpret my argument. I never said anything about validity so I'll just skip this part onto the bit that does address what I said.
"Why? Being a heterosexual, I would rank my sexual orientation as being a pretty darn important part of my identity traits. I'm not convinced that there is a hierarchy of what is and isn't so important. Everything you do shapes the kind of person you are."
I too am a heterosexual, as are a whole mess of other people. There are also homosexuals and bisexuals (and other -sexuals that I'm not familiar enough with to even attempt to represent). Crazy, right? But when somebody asks me to tell them about myself, I don't find "I love the ladies" as relevant a piece of information as "gamer" or "best sandwich-maker ever".
MotoRobo - That's an interesting piece of information, and I'm kinda' in awe of the psychological tactics at work, though I'd argue that (not unlike certain brands of feminism) the effects to the gay "community" could be just as detrimental as helpful. Granted, some people are able to discern the difference between their sexuality and their "identity", but I know more than a handful of gay men and women who are "GAY" and that is how they define the entirety of their existence as people.
For me being a gay person myself, going to gay pride in the real world is more about being around the people that share something with me that not everyone else does. There is no doubt that sexuality is at the core of ones being. It might not be your total personality, but its a big part. Also its nice to go somewhere and not have to live in the heterosexual driven world for at least a few hours. I guess they were just trying to bring that to WOW. And it really doesn't put gay people in a harsher light. Homophobes are going to hate gay people even if this never happened. Thats what makes them homophobes.
Actually, we DID publicize the hell out of it. I sent out press releases to several dozen media contacts - gamer media, tech media, and LGBT media, mostly - and we got covered by The Advocate, Joe. My. God., Queers United, Dallas Voice, Manhunt Daily, GayWired, Dallas Voice, GLAAD Blog, WoW.com (formerly WoWInsider), Project Lore, and a handful of smaller outlets. We posted about it on a variety of online forums as well. We also sent releases to both of the editors at GayGamer, so it's a bit puzzling why they say we didn't publicize it. Maybe they don't check their email a lot.

Nice to see you keeping it number one :)
Is the lion in the picture a pun? pride?
Really though this is hilarious.
What the fuck is wrong with you? What sort of condition do you have where you're insulted by whatever other people gather for in an online game?
Dykes on Bikes. Simply amazing.
