Garriott 'keen to get back into the fray,' could do a medieval fantasy title photo

After Richard Garriott returned from outer space, he quit his job at NCSoft. In a letter addressed to the Tabula Rasa community, Garriott expressed that his “unforgettable experience” in space gave him the fuel to pursue new interests. One of those interests is apparently a medieval fantasy game. Surprise!

Garriott expressed this new and unanticipated desire with Wired:

After 25 years at Origin, the last thing I wanted to make was yet another medieval fantasy game. Now, after a very interesting break, I'm keen to get back into the fray and work on a new game. Probably medieval fantasy and probably online; there's something very powerful about getting people together.

His plans seem a bit tentative, but we’re guessing that Richard Garriott can do whatever Richard Garriott wants. He’s like King Midas ... minus that whole Tabula Rasa thing. Let's hope that another trip to outer space doesn't detour Garriott's new vision.

[Thanks, Brian!]

Not exactly the grand ambitious projects we were expecting.

i think it is probably best that he hangs up his development tools. his time has been and gone. a new game from him would just be like a new paul mccartney album.

what a hypocrite! the last thing he wants is a medievel then after a month says, okay, i want to do another medievel game, such orginality in that game department. how about a present time mmo? fuck the future, fuck the past, focus on the now and it can be very interesting.

Hell, I just want him to do another Ultima just to finish where that pathetic piece of shit Ultima:Ascension left off, preferably in the style of Ultima VII.

He has lost ALL credibility after what happened at NCsoft with Tabula Rasa. You can not jerk people around and turn around say I'm going to go do something more interesting and your going to buy it and like it.

Literally at this point he could hire the ENTIRE Blizzard staff and not make a decent game.

Rich Garriott's a joke, but I don't think his games are bad. Tabula Rasa was pretty fun, but that market is already way too saturated and the game just wasn't polished enough or had enough content to survive. Everybody hypes up their MMO's before they come out... Age of Conan was supposed to be the pinnacle of MMO pvp bliss, but it turned out being pretty generic. Vanguard was supposed to be the ultimate new MMO tailored for oldschool hardcore EQ players, and it turned out basically being a WoW clone with less interface options to make the game "harder" (less convenient). Tabula Rasa was supposed to be an awesome hybrid of action/rpg MMO, but it was just a typical MMO set in the future with aiming instead of targeting (although the actual combat was exactly the same as any other MMO).

Radical idea - make a non-online RPG. Maybe actually make some money?

You'd think that all of these smart business types would be able to stop thinking about how much WoW makes long enough to look at what happens to most of the rest of the MMO market.

Step One: Get involved with EA.
Step Two: Remake Ultima 8 and 9, only do it well this time.
Step Three: Profit!
