I spent many a day and night reworking popular videogame tunes in Mario Paint's composer section, so this 2009 video brought back not only memories of those times, but also of the classic games that it pays tribute to.

You might have seen this "Evolution of Video Games" before, but it's too great not to share again for those who haven't, and is perfect "content" for a holiday where not much else is going on.

It's over 9 minutes of 22 tunes recreated with the Nintendo sounds in mariocomposer.net, by a guy named Aldofo Baez.  From a musical standpoint, there's some nice transistions and sound effect use (rock those laser cat samples!), and a purist wouldn't use the accidentals, but the retro tunes are what is going to win you over anyway.

Put this on in the background while you surf, as it's pretty long. I mean, it takes five minutes to even get to Star Fox. At eight minutes you'll get to some Super Smash Bros Wii. Then Super Mario Galaxy. It's all pretty great.

[Thanks, Dexter]

God, Mario Paint is such a legend. How is that there was never a descent follow up? not even a clone.

I can't place the LOZ:OoT one either. It sounds familiar as hell, though. I almost want to say its from a different game... And my favorite bits were Metroid and Kid Icarus theme (just like Mario paint, what happened to Kid Icarus?)

It's definitely Gerudo Valley--one of the best tracks from OoT!

@SaveTheDodos

Yeah no kidding. I mean, would the Wii not be perfect for this?

Instead we get the pulse sensor.
At least SMG2 kicks ass.

Oh god, I can only imagine how they would try to do this on wii. conducting with a wii remote would only teach people how horrible their sense of rhythm really is... maybe the fly swatting game would translate well, though.

I got chills a few times in there. Particularly with Mario Galaxy.

Damn, I didn't realize I loved some of these games as much as I do. I mean, we all know they're great, but wow. That vid really hit home.

I thought it was funny when the Tetris theme came up and the little car icon was on screen because those little cars look like shitty Soviet Russian cars.

Maybe part 2 will feature some goddamn Mega-Man. Nice to see Duck Tales get some love though. I hope there's a part 2 eventually.

Not to say it was a bad video, cause it was brilliant. My only issue is that they did alot more time skipping in the later generations.

fun, very well made. but didn't leave nintendo consoles really. so more the evolution of nintendo music rather than video game music. shame!

I'm still a bit baffled on the choice of song from EarthBound. Sure, I was able to pick it out immediately, but it's not nearly a song that I identify as one that represents the game as a whole.

Absolutely incredible. I still have to point out the lack of Mega Man music, but this is still fan-fucking-tastic.

Am i the only one who thinks saying this video is "Gaming's musical history" is like saying a book is about world history, then cutting out everywhere but america and then cutting out 100 years in the middle?

Where is anything not nintendo related? should be re-named, "Nintendo's Musical history" beause otherwise this is taking a big shit on all the amazing music that isn't nintendo based.

Even that is flawed, where is castlevania 2? where is Megaman 3? no metal gear? let's not include anything mitsuda..... History my ass :S

What buri2 said.

Where's Rob Hubbard, Bo and Yuzo Koshiro, the first composer to be so important his name was in a game's title screen? Where's Monkey Island?

It's still a great medley. Simply changing its name to "Nintendo's Music History" would suffice.

Yeah, I think it should be changed to "Nintendo's Musical History" as well. Not only is the medley not indicative of all video gaming, there's not much evolution in there either. Just mostly history.

Maybe I'm just pissed there's no Shadow of the Colossus. That's the best game soundtrack in my opinion, with P3 or P4 in second.
