Gaming's Guilty Pleasures: Savegame archives
KamikazeTutor

[Editor's note: KamikazeTutor takes a look at a interesting look at game saving. I've done the same thing plenty of times myself. Sometimes, I just want to experience a particular section and nothing more from a game. Read on for Tutor's Guilty Pleasure as part of the Monthly Musings. -- CTZ]

Took me a while to find a name for this article. It's hard to designate something that plenty of us do, but rarely discuss between ourselves; it's like some kind of dirty secret that everyone thinks it's theirs and theirs alone.

I'm not talking about the basic need to save the game, but the urge to save it in a specific spot, just before a moment you feel like you'll want to replay it times and times, endlessly.

Hell, you'll probably be surprised as you start reading this text that you're not the only one doing it. Much like the reaction I had when I saw that episode of Ren & Stimpy where they have the statue of Lincoln pick its nose and smear the previous nasal contents beneath its chair –- I thought I was the only kid that did that!

Err… Onward with the article…

Let's face it, the replayability of a game dims as it gets less recent in our hands. Sometimes before the retrogoggles kick in, you just remember “that part” of “that game” that you really enjoyed, and then you start digging through your files or memory cards.

Grabbing a save file and starting a game not from the beginning and not till the end is one big guilty pleasure of yours truly. I do it with almost all games I own, and I have the quantity of CDs and memory cards to prove it.

Lately I've been going back to the last battle of Half-Life 2 Episode Two as well as some crazy Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 boss battles. Especially when time is not abundant, ten amazing minutes can be as fun as three hours.

In a funny way it brings a new kind of gameplay to the table -- the savegame management. Where you always think twice of which savegame will be overthrown. It's a bitch when you have to decide which save to delete to make way for another great moment.

Some of us go to the extent of labeling their memory cards, renaming their save files, putting them in each separate folder, making sure that third Fallout run doesn’t get mixed up with the previous one. Making sure the next time something needs to be replayed, it will be quickly found.

This is also something with which not-so-great games shine. Many games, bad or not, have dull moments, which some players would gladly skip every time they replay them. To the player familiarized with the game, playing it by small sections of it doesn't spoil the experience; it actually makes that “reasonable” game more enjoyable.

Using a two year old game as an example that I have recently replayed, Prey always felt lacking something, which is strange, as where the game adds new story and gameplay elements, it does it in such epic proportions. Yet, I never really wanted to play the whole game again after the first run. I did of course, saved the game on some particular parts and returned to them quite a few times. I pretend not to reveal important parts of the game so I will only say that the most ball dropping moments of it make the game worth your time.

It's like you're in post postproduction, cutting out what you think that isn't necessary and stitching everything according to your taste. And it tastes just like awesome.

In conclusion, when time lacks but memories urge to be remembered, bringing out that savegame from your extensive archive is one great way to keep a game alive, even if it's in little bits at a time. Ask Chad Concelmo, he knows exactly what I'm talking about.

So, which savegame you paid more attention to lately?

I used to do this right before awesome cutscenes in FFVII, particulary right before the emerald, diamond, and ruby weapons are released to wreak havok across the lands -    view discussion

I saved right before fighting the End from MGS 3, epic boss battle is epic, but uhm...doesn't he like die after a certain amount of time passes, what a way to replay a memory.
Passionate Styos's Avatar
I don't know that this is a guilty pleasure..but anyway, good read. I also have the same problem, I wish there was many slots, so I can play against bosses that are fun to play against, like with Phantom in Megaman Zero 3 or most bosses in Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania.
mix's Avatar
I've only saved before something epic very few time as I usually just play through agin.

I've been thinking about hitting up Chrono Cross and/or Ledgend of Dragoon sometime.
bleep's Avatar
Interesting write up, I knew I wasn't the only one!
Usually I save this way only out of fear that the amount of life I have at that exact moment is more than I will be able to get anytime I play the level again....during doom III for instance I was saving like every five minutes sometimes!

I was going to do this same article, bastard. Well done!

I don't mean quicksaving all the time, but to actually take the time to save the game (giving it a name if possible, etc.) just before a certain part of the game.

@t3h d0n:
Yeah, I love sniper battles and figured in a bad way that I couldn't just save _right before_ the The End fight.

@Passionate Styos:
Oh god, Castlevania saves are a pain in the ass, 1 to 3 slots is just not enough for the amount of cool boss battles.

@mix:
Eheh, nice to see that someone doesn't waste time with this addicting pleasure.

@Monkey:
:\ sorry

I can't find one of my PS1 memory cards!!!!!! :'(

Been looking for it for weeks now =/.

I always go out of my way to save and make a copy just before entering the Temple of Time for the first time in Ocarina of Time. Something about that moment always gives me shivers. I also copy a save just before the Phantome Train Sequence in Final Fantasy VI.

Sometimes I don't feel obligated to work to unlock everything and there are several games I feel could do without any kind of unlocking system, so I just download a save from GameFAQs and don't think twice about it. What comes to mind are every music and fighting game I've ever played (IIDX being the exception as every recent game has only three or so songs to unlock anyway).
Druid_01's Avatar
i didn't people really did this alot, i personally don't but i can see people wanting to replay just boss fights or "cool" parts.
wilbo's Avatar
i always have a spare file just before the resident evil 4 lake battle, i just love lobbing harpoons at that biach then hammering A to escape the rope.
good times
also, kudos on the epic post kamikaze

I have honestly never done this, and now I feel like an idiot for not doing so... I've replayed games just get to certain parts, other things I want to re-experience I just never do. I can't believe I've never done this stuff. I've always been a one save file guy, unless I replay...
HijackedFlavor's Avatar
Great article and very true. I did this a lot with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. More recently, I did this in MGS3 after climbing up that giant-ass ladder, because I enjoyed jumping down the chasm so much. I don't know why.
casinogrande's Avatar
Doesn't MGS3 Subsistence have a Boss Mode? I do like games that make finding cool moments easier.
LongDeth's Avatar
All through Chrono Trigger and FF7.
SantanaClaus89's Avatar
My problem isn't saving multiple different times for the same game, but keeping every game save forever. Like I'll trade in a game, but I'll keep the game save. Like a notch in my bedpost or something I don't know...

I have 2 memory cards dedicated to Xenogears. just going back and listening to the music on my ipod, I can remember those specific spots.

You make me sad. I lost my more important Gamecube memory card last week.

Half life episode 3 fight with the striders and hunters at the end was one of the coolest moments in gaming history, and i have replayed it more time than i can count.

I think I beat the worldrecord on Mass Effect though... I made over 300 saves in my first runthrough :-D

I'm going to start doing this now. Here I am playing through the WHOLE game all over again just to play about 20-30 minutes of it (altogether). Now I feel like a twat.
king3vbo's Avatar
My Chrono Trigger cart has all 3 saves from the same playthroughs, at 3 of my favorite spots/boss battles in the game
AKK's Avatar
I've never done this, nor ever actually thought of doing it.

Weirdo.

@casinogrande:
Indeed, games that add a boss mode are full of win.
But sometimes, like in MGS3, you only get a specific set of items, probably not the full package you had on the main game walkthrough.
KamikazeTutor's Avatar
Btw, thanks for the feedback. :)
Yey front page!
mrberns's Avatar
Only game I ever really did that with obsesivly was Shadow of the Colossus. Where I save before each Colossus.
TrailerParkJesus's Avatar
Yeah, I don't think I've ever done this.

I feel like it's like cheating or something. Not exactly, but kinda.

I mean, I keep multiple saves like others, and I keep them way after I finish a game. But when I feel like replaying a certain part of a game, I instead play through the whole thing over again. Maybe because I don't want to miss reliving other moments that didn't quite stand out but were otherwise really great. Plus, going through the lesser moments makes the great moments that much more awesome.

Congrats on the frontpage!!
PetiePal's Avatar
Sometimes if I'm playing a game where a HUGE decision may downright affect the rest of the game I'll revert to a save. I mean it's just like keeping your finger on the page of a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book.

"I'll just head down the cave instead of going up the stairs. I wonder what...OH SHIT A TROLL'S DOWN HERE. BACK TO PAGE 42! I didn't take my finger off the page, I didn't take my finger off the page!"
