[Editor's note: I hate to admit it, but I suffer from wanting collector's edition of videogames too. I'm more controlling than poor Kryptinite here, but I do break down every so often. I'll be happily getting the collector's edition of GTA IV next Tuesday and will promptly asphyxiate myself with the duffel bag when I get home ... anyway, here's Kryptinite's contribution to April's Monthly Musings. -- CTZ]

Hi. My name is Jermaine Pulliam and I'm addicted to collector’s editions. More specifically, I'm addicted to limited editions of anything. I'm not sure exactly when my addiction started nor do I see an end coming to this horrible problem in the foreseeable future. I can't explain why I'm addicted to collector’s editions but I can share my experiences so that you know that you're not alone.

Hit the jump for more.

Most people complained at the start of the current generation of consoles that videogames were becoming too expensive. I however was use to paying $60 dollars for games because ... well I have a problem. Remember when Halo 2 came out with the limited edition that came in a very attractive metal case? Not only did I opt to buy that version, but I also purchased the limited edition Halo themed Xbox even though I already had an Xbox sitting at home. I've bought both the limited edition and the Legendary edition of Halo 3, the limited edition of Prey, Splinter Cell Double Agent, Stranglehold, Lost Planet, and Resident Evil 4.

I know what you're thinking and it's OK. Go ahead and judge me. I can't honestly tell you why I purchased the limited edition of Prey, except to say my addiction is getting stronger.

My addiction doesn't stop at limited releases of consoles and games; it also spreads to movies, electronics, and also game related drinks. Yes, not many people can say this but I did have some of the Final Fantasy inspired drinks.

With every new release, my addiction becomes more expensive. The Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition has already been ordered and will arrive to me from Amazon on May 1st. Why did I buy it from Amazon? Because if you order it from there, you get an exclusive license plate that you can't get anywhere else. It cost me $89.99 plus shipping for this fix.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is also coming out with a limited edition that will cost $85.00 for me to soothe my urges; I don't even know what makes it a limited edition but it doesn't matter. I already own a PSP and I love God of War so you can see where this is heading. That's right, come June I will own the red Kratos themed PSP, which comes with a copy of the game.

I've tried to stop in the past, honest! I've withheld my urge and didn't get the super special versions of Gears of War, BioShock, Oblivion, or the MGS themed PS3. I'm making progress right? Not really, because I still want all of those things I've mentioned. I one day hope to get control of this because I don't know if my wallet or soul can take much more of this abuse.

If I really had to pinpoint a reason to why I'm such a sucker for limited edition merchandise, I would have to say that I enjoy collecting things. Videogames are what I do and what I want to do in life. Some people collect rocks, Pogs, stamps, or coins. I collect electronic forms of entertainment.

In the end I'm okay with my addiction; my guilty pleasure. I'm responsible with my money, all my bills get paid on time, and I get to indulge in what I think are the finer things in life. So if you have the same addiction I do, it's okay. Embrace it. At least we aren't on coke.

And another thing, anyone else notice the disturbing trend of $79.99 now being the typical price point for a Special/Collector's edition?

I was browsing through the upcoming releases, and almost all the Collector's editions were $79.99 and up. I guess companies are well aware of our particular problem.

I kinda wish gamers would send the publishers the nessege that they're more discerning about special editions. LIek I think Bioshock SE and the upcoming Fallout Special editions and Special Editions done right. A tin case with a 20 minut making of docu hardly seems worth it.

I admit, I got the Halo 3 Limited Edition but it was mostly for the calibration tool. Kinda wish it was included in the regular edition. The art book was nice but not $10 extra nice.

The Bioshock SE sold out, so I better preprder Fallout soon, cause I can see the same thing happening there if the pre-release word of mouth and marketing brings the hype to Bioshock pre-release levels.

I'm quite the opposite. I will almost always resist the urge to buy Collectors and Limited Editions, because I am extraordinarily cheap.

Excellent article though. Grats on the frontpage!

Do you ever make any profit off of selling your limited edition games? I assume if you only bought CE's of big-name games (and ignored the shitty ones) and waited a few yrs, you could sell for well above retail price to other collector whores like you.

I never sell any of my merch. I use to do the Gamestop thing when I was younger with no money but those days are over.

If I have the money at the time of release, I'll get the collector's edition (Example: Oblivion collector's edition with the Elder Scrolls Pocket Traveller's guide and the Septim. I regret nothing). I REALLY want the Fallout one as well. but I can usually hold back if it's just a bunch of dumb stuff, or a game I don't really care about.

I totally just bought the GTA IV collectors edition only because it came with too much nonsense to pass up.

yea I have to say, it can be a sweet deal with all the extra stuff, but I find special editions can be very impractical for daily video game usage. For example, with Gears of War in the tin case, it is hard to get to the game disc because it's inside another sleeve inside the tin, etc, etc. But the GTA box doesn't look like that which is good.

GTA IV's Collector's Edition is the only one so far that has tempted me (though if I liked hand-helds, I'd buy me up some KRATOS PSP action!), but I probably won't get it. It's an extra $30+ and I just don't need it.

The music collection is probably going to be nice to have, though. I hear GTA IV's music playlist is the best yet. And the duffle bag and key chain are also pretty cool.

Argh...Maybe I'll get it. Maybe. But only if they have some in-store (I doubt it!), because I'm so not ordering it and waiting 3 days longer than I have to. I need GTA IV. I'm going in Monday, the 28th and midnight and I am going to get it like a good little fanboy.

I agree with MechaMonkey. I've never wanted a collector's edition. I'd prefer to save the cash for additional games. However, I do like to collect games themselves and display them like prized possessions long after I've reached the point where I will never revisit 90% of them. All games are a collector's edition to me! Or something.

Special editions? Waste of money.

At my local Kmart you can see the regular Halo 3 at $56 and the Collector Ed at $39.

i dont understand the collector mentality at all.

i like playing video games, i dont care about extraneous objects, especially branded merchandise crap. i sell video games as soon as i'm finished with them.

i think thats why ive never really fit into any video game community. i just care about the games, fuck the bullshit.

I'm totally the same, but I'm more into CD and DVD limited edition packs. If there's a bonus DVD or limited edition slipcase, I have to get it. A mate of mine buys loads of metal stuff, so he has the most outlandish special editions ever

I also like to buy limited/collector's editions of games and DVDs too. Though nowadays I don't have that much money (blame this urge to buy CEs and being in shcool :/) so I'm not buying that much of them, which makes me kinda sad because I'd like to have, say GTAIV CE.
Last one I bought was Assassin's Creed CE, too bad the game was crappy, but at least I got the sweet resin figure.

I'm a collectors edition buyer as well. Bioshock (that original collectors package looked so attractive), Halo (no not legendary), Lost Planet, DMC4, Assassin's Creed, GoW, Mass Effect (which I had to get through futur shop because I'm Canadian), CoD4... and the list does go on. I am also getting GTAIV, MGS3 (not the console package) and Fallout for sure this summer in limited edition. I have never played alone in the dark but depending on the reviews and game footage I see... I may be tempted. I can say that this has stretched out towards movies as well. I love Steelbook and would hope to see it on more movies. Anyways, I guess I have a problem too. With my current situation however, it's quite easy to burn money and I'm not too proud of that. I should settle down on my consumer whoreism sometime soon though. I have to.

I bought GTA 4 on amazon for the same reason as you, extra faceplate. Yeah, I have the same problem, i'll shell out anything for games and CEs I won't even pay attention to the price if I have a midl interest in the series. Lets see the last ones I bought...
Devil May Cry 4, Call of Duty 4, halo 3 legendary. I would have more but I jumped on the 360 wagon too late to get some of the previous ones like Gears, which I would've gladly bought.

Fortunately this addiction doesnt occur to cds or dvds.... much.

I must say friend . . . as a fellow addict . . . how dare you not pick up Bioshock C.E. In my humble opinion the collector's editions that include thing like figurines are the ones that are worth it. The addiction is at it's worse when you're plunkin' down an extra $10 for Ninja Gaiden Sigma just because it has a bonus DVD that you'll never watch and a cardboard slipcase (which I did . . . so sad).

P.s. Don't worry. The artbook the the faux snakeskin cover that comes with Prey is TOTALLY awsome.

I somehow fought the urge to buy the GTA4 SE.

My heart is still in need of it.

Hopefully I'll enjoy my saved money by buying an extra game to ease the pain...

I'm getting the Fallout 3 one for sure though!

Ever.

I have pretty much the opposite problem. The last game I paid original retail price for (not counting gifts) was Rock Band. Before that, I'm not even sure. And when it comes to DVDs, I'll wait for the cheapest possible release to come out, where it doesn't even have a case insert. If buying an official blank DVD with the title written on it in Sharpie would knock a few bucks off, I'd consider it.

@ kryptinite:

How can you afford all of this stuff? Do you have a top position at work? Loan money from friends? Or just mooch of your rich parents? I can see why you'd do it though. A lot of those special editions look really cool! BTW, that Xbox looks awesome as well! Reminds me of my Donkey Kong 64 themed Nintendo 64 that came with the game! And the game came with the expansion pack! I never really saw much use for the expansion pack. They never said how much "expansion" you get, but as a kid, I didn't care about that.

Also, how do you have room for all your stuff?

I have a decent job, not too many bills, no car payment, no kids, and this is what I blow my extra money on. More than all that though, I know how to make a budget and stick to it.. I guess I could save up all of the money I blow and get...a house or something but at this point in my life I don't want a house :).

Also, I share an apartment with a fellow gamer so there's games related stuff everywhere. We manage to keep it looking like a mess though.

I too am a special edition-aholic.

I would love to see a lot more specials like Bioshock where the publisher asks us what we want included for swag however.

I already have Halo 3 Lengendary, Assassins Creed SE, Gears Of War SE, Perfect Dark SE, and picking up GTA4 SE in a few days. Definitely going to get in on the Fallout SE when it comes out too.
