Gaming mags continue long march toward extinction photo

Not long after Ziff Davis announced they were canning OPM, now Future Publishing (Edge, Next-Gen.biz, OXM, etc.) has said they have suffered $95.6 million in losses. Ouch. Look out how the corporate head spins the news:

"It is clear with hindsight that during the past two years, Future over-invested in acquisitions and under-invested in organic development. The consequences of this strategy are clearly evident in today’s disappointing results.”

"We have taken a number of steps to strengthen the business. These actions have created significant cost savings which we are fully re-investing in the business."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, print is dying a slow, painful death. As the Internet thrives and more of our mobile devices are Web-enabled, the need for long-form magazine pieces will dim. We fully expect, here at Dtoid, to rock the Casbah well into the night.

Damn, that was synergy. I just posted that SA's reviews render magazines useless and then this post shows up. Magic!

Furthermore, I'd like to report that Destructoid has suffered about $95.6 bucks in server fees this week. We're doomed!

Well maybe if monthly publications had editors that could actually write a decent article, maybe they'd actually have something worth reading. I love "Edge" magazine, but it's damn expensive to import, about $75! Still, I prefer it infinitely over "Electronic Gaming Monthly", "Game Informer" and "GamePro". News that's weeks old, game reviews I can get anywhere else, and uninteresting cover stories will piece by piece be the undoing of print media as we know it. "PC Gamer" is decent, but they really have a stick up their ass about everything console-oriented. That, and I haven't played a PC game since I bought my Xbox 360.

I hate to see print die. Edge has always been such a great magazine. The writing has always been good and the awesome cover art each month makes you want to keep your issues in great condition. Great texture and art is something you can ever get on the internet. Unless the internet becomes VR.

If you have an internet enabled computer and an internet connection then there is no reason to ever buy a gaming magazine.

Between Destructoid and few other not as often updated gaming news blogs you can read everything that would be in next months EGM or Gamepro right now.

I must confess that I like having the printed material in front of me to read. Reading from a screen is annoying as all hell.

But one of the movie industry trade magazines that I get offers an on-line edition that looks and behaves exactly like the print edition, and I think it's great. I can even save it to PDF if I want.

By analysis of this post, I have concluded that we need to figure out how to make it easy to read Destructoid when people are taking a shit. I'll work on it.

laptop + wireless internet works well.

I use my DS when I'm on the can. In two weeks I worked my way up through the cups and beat Special Cup on 150 Mirror - all from quick, 10-15 minute sessions on the dumper.

Niero, I'm all in favor of you guys sending us all macbooks and airport express setups. If you do that, I'm sure I'll always be able to poop and read your website simultaneously. Alternatively, you're welcome to install a 26" LCD or Plasma in my bathroom (I'm not greedy, so no need for bigger than that.) and a 60GB PS3 for websurfing.

Your third option is to setup a complicated series of mirror that would reflect an image toward me from my computer to the can. Whatever you guys have in the budget... Until then, I'm stuck with my Maxim and EGM. sigh...
