The beta for United Front Games ModNation Racers has only been going on for a few days, but those invited to the already have their creative juices flowing.
Using the game's extensive character customization (or "Mods," as they're called in the game), creators do what they tend to do when handed such tools -- re-create their favorite gaming icons. I found everything from creations of Old Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4 to God of War's Kratos, from Nintendo's Luigi to a Mega Man with ears.
While the authenticity of the Mods vary in quality, the ingenuity to bring them to life should be commended. To imagine, these are only creations made with the limited parts United Front Games has made available in the beta. I can't wait to see what people come up with when the game launches next year.
Hit the jump to check out a sampling of some of the creations I found; all images were taken using the in-game photo mode.

I wish I was in the beta. Is Dtoid going to give away some codes maybe?
I made two Jins [Blazblue and Tekken] last night, I might put images of them in a c-blog later today, with some impressions.
Totally free.
How can u say this gane is going to tank if you never played it? Look at the huge success of lbp. Shoulf atleast give it a try when it comes out.
A racing game with an emphasis on user-generated contend = ModNation Racers
Hmm... I wonder what we'd get if they made games of other genres in this style? What would an FPS with an emphasis on user-generated content be like? Or an RPG?
The other game that CAN be compared to this is LBP, same focus of user created content, and that sold 2.8M copies worldwide. That was at $60, and that did not stop it from becoming a success.
So, the indication is that this will be a success, maybe on par with LBP.
I personally enjoy making the karts more than the people. Track creator is great too!
Modnation is firmly on my "to buy" list thanks to the beta.
I haven't been able to get into a race yet and there is a lot of loading. The driving also does not feel as tight as Mario Kart but that probably has more to do with me trying out only dirt tracks so far. The presentation of this game is a lot better and funnier than I was expecting.
(it seems to have saved the created stuff I did though)

Those are awesome!
They made a whole slew of them for RPGs called RP maker. The ones they for council however we're failures as it was so limited as to what you could do that it was almost not worth it. The computer ones are where it's at.
no, nobody owns the right to any genre of videogames. anybody can make games like these, as long as they aren't blatant rip offs of the LBP or MN IPs.
I'm still waiting for someone to do a LBP-style 2D Fighter Maker, where you can make fighting games using an engine similar to SF4. A "2D Fighter in 3D" would make character creation so much easier for the common person. If they could pull it off great, with character, stage and maybe even system creation and sharing, it could be epic.
Everytime I wax on about this, someone always says "Hurr Hurr, there's already MUGEN!" They seem to not understand that MUGEN's community is about as fun as a WWE vs Dragon Ball Z Forum and that creating a character is about as user friendly as a 747.
I am pleasantly surprised.
That game has an awesome character creator. Hopefully everything comes together for it because if not... wasted potential.
