Gaming at night banned in Vietnam photo

I've never been to Vietnam, but it's now in the running for Worst Country Ever. Why? Gaming at night has been banned!

The country's Ministry of Information and Communication is now working to stop nighttime online gaming. They are doing this with the hopes that it will "mitigate the side effects of online games." Right.

The lockdown is coming soon: Internet service providers have been asked to block all online gaming daily from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m by March 3rd. Those ISPs and gaming locations that do not comply will have their services shut off by the government. Serious business.

This is going to suck for a lot of people. Gamespot says that 23 million people of Vietnam use the internet. My guess? People are just going to game more during the day.

Shit!

If i was Obama right now i would consider this a serious breach of human rights and invade/liberate that shit immediately!

Fuck "peace in the middle east" or "the whole Korea problem" or "Whatever the beef is with Iran" - THIS shit must be stopped FOR HUMANITY!

Yeah that seems like it would just... harm daytime productivity? Now instead of people gaming at night and being tired at work, they'll be sleeping at night and gaming (well rested!) instead of work! :D

So this only applies to offline gaming? Will people have to call the police if they believe their neighbour is playing games at night?

America, I think it's time to invade them again to free them from such an oppressive regime.

So instead of kids being a little tired in class due to gaming at night, they're going to skip school altogether to play during the day. Sounds like an awesome plan.

Yeah, if this was brought into law here in the Uk, i would have to quit my job or else I'd never get to play gamez.

That would make me either a sad, or a possibly suicidal panda.

@Epic - that Rematch needs to happen, for realz.

Great move, I just hope people are not allowed to play cards, chess, soccer, or have recreational sex at night, those things really cut into the nations productivity!

Way to go out of touch selective prohibitions!

@Sexualchocolate If it was brought into law in the UK, I'd stage a coup against the (already crap) government.

What a ridiculous law to introduce. I really cannot see this making any difference at all and would have thought it would have been tougher to enforce than they are making out too.

This is actually terrible - people who don't play games will propably see it as a minor problem. But after you think about it, what if they'd shut the TV stations at night?
It's just... I don't even know what to say. This is fucking bullshit. If people can't take care of their health by themselves, nor will government. Also, if they pay for something, they should be able to use it fully.

If this will somehow spread, we'll be in deep trouble. The fuck is this.

As far as I know , they only stop providing internet services to Internet shop or Gaming center , not home user.
I live in Vietnam.
And for more information , one of the the head of IT in Ho Chi Minh city ( one of the biggest city in Vietnam ) can't even pronounce a word "Cyber" in "World Cyber Games" ( it was 3 years ago )

This is bullshit. I hope these people fight for their right to party/play!

But what exactly is blocked? Only online gaming? It's not that there are no proxies out there. And I wonder what that means for starcraft.

Yeah, it seems that it'll only affect internet shops and the like. I'm not sure if they have them in the States, but these shops are like dens-- and by dens I mean the kind where an addict goes in and never leaves for days on end.
Duy 's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/23/2011 08:07

Internet service to Gaming Center and Internet shop , and if I'm not wrong , Game Online provider must stop their servers too (well, I'm not sure about this , since I don't like MMORPG ,I never follow GO news in Vietnam)
I think since home user can still use their internet , so it won't effect much to Starcraft 2 player ( Starcraft:BW is almost dead or dead already in Vietnam )

Governing bodies have waaaay to much control over citizensn in all countries. Some more than others, obviously, but the control and power lust in this world is fucking sickening..people can't take it,and then you have people who already are unstable and crack from the pressure and go after political figures.

But guys, gaming at night will almost always keep people up long after the time when they should have gone to sleep. I mean, really, I think we should follow Vietnam's example. After all, if it's the government's role to take care of people's health, shouldn't it also be the government's role to ensure people are living healthy choices? And folks, like it or not, playing New Vegas up until 2 in the morning when you need to get up at 5 for work just ain't healthy.
