For fans of epic, old school, turn-based Japanese RPGs, Lost Odyssey couldn't come quickly enough, but you've still got some waiting to do yet. Luckily, Gametrailers has a preview running that may satiate your appetite for a wee moment.
All I can say is, as one of those aforementioned fans, I am positively drooling for this, but maintaining caution just in case it disappoints. That said, it looks gorgeous, has a promising story and is boasting some kick-arse music, which is really flavoring that caution with some heady optimism.
I do wonder why Japanese RPGs seem obsessed with casting female-to-male transsexuals in the lead role, though.

Meet the rest of the team
I haven't played a JRPG in years, since Tales of Symphonia, which I didn't beat, but this is really grinding my gears. Maybe, I'll pick this up... maybe
Looks nice, but I'm very wary about the rumored 20+ hours of cut scenes. The numerous seemingly endless cut scenes in Xenogears were bad enough; this doesn't sound too appetizing. Fingers crossed, it won't be that bad, but we'll see.
I fucking goddamn hate random encounters. They are the stupidest thing ever. Ambushes yes. They make sense. Walking through open scenery and suddenly coming across a giant dinosaur from nowhere is just fucking retarded. At least put the enemies visible on the map, and have them chase you. Grandia had an awesome battle system, one of the best if not THE best real time turn based battle system, and it didn't need random encounters.
That said, depending on the quality of the story, I might give it a go and suck it down. Hopefully there are plenty of items and abilities to ward of weak, time consuming enemy battles.

The 40 hour runtime. That better be bloody content too. I don't want 20 hours of actual fun stuff and then 20 hours of grinding or farming items to advance the story. Side quests are fine, as long as they're optional, and don't prevent the player from actually finishing the game by punishing them for not fighting 500 griffins to collect rat teeth to make a bone saw to fight the second form of the five stage final boss that is made of angel wings and an orchestra.
Yeah, it LOOKS pretty, but it also LOOKS like it has archaic gameplay. I love JRPGs as much as the next RPG enthusiast, but I dislike how they want to take the progression of 20+ years of RPGs and toss it out the window.
If I wanted to play oldschool games, I'll gladly go to my shelf and pick one. I buy new games for new concepts.
And do not want on the 20+ hours of cutscene. And I thought Xenosaga was bad... I like playing my RPG's thankyouverymuch.
I'm excited and uncertain about this at the same time. I didn't like blue dragon that much, so hopefully this lives up to the hype better. hopefuly that 40 hours of gameplay is mostly solid gameplay and not all cutscenes.
Random Encounters though =P I could do without that. and 4 disc? -_-
I am pretty much with bottled dark and naia. It is ridiculous how much I am anticipating this game. I also loved Blue Dragon, and random encounters don't bother me. It's strange, people complain when there are too many cutscenes, but they'll also complain when they have to battle. Do you want to play the game or not?
I must say I am a Sakaguchi fanboy. In fact, if he and Itagaki didn't hate Sony so much, I'd probably never have bought a 360, even with gems like Bioshock and Mass Effect on it. Here's hoping Mistwalker's next RPG features some Yoshitaka Amano artwork.
I have ***swallows some hope and dreams*** average expectations for this game.

I like random encounters except when I'm passing through a place I outgrew a long time ago. I really like the tension of being low on health and running to a town/healing point wishing I don't get attacked, but I hate getting into 20 battles on my way back to somewhere with monsters that receive 3 or 4 times their hp in damage from me.
That's a REALLY good preview, and it's somehow getting me even more excited for this game than I already am. Oh my lord, two weeks to go! Thanks knives!
Since when have JRPG's progressed the model? I always thought people liked them because in all reality they don't. I'll take my JRPG's for what they are and look for any inspiration in the western flavors. Can't wait for this, but really can't wait for Fallout :)
Looks like it's going to be really good. As far as archaic gameplay goes, if you don't like old-school JRPG's, don't bother playing it.
It's definitely looking like a very traditional JRPG, but so was Dragon Quest VIII and that game was fucking awesome.
Sometimes it's more about the high level of dedication, effort, and polish put into the same old RPG mold, than it is redefining the RPG genre altogether. Lost Odyssey is what it is. Pure Japanese RPG nerdgasm material.
I'm still really fucking confused about the whole mid-riff armor that Kaim is wearing though. Why the fuck do they still create costumes like this? Random encounters I can hang with, leaving your midsection completely vulnerable for the sake of being a sexy man-bitch I don't get.......

I actually liked Blue Dragon and niche RPG's like it so I would imagine that I will most likely love Lost Odessy.

Yeah, we don't need a new format.
not like it'll be back before this beauty though
GTA perhaps, god willing, but not Lost Odyssey

I was looking forward to this when I knew almost nothing about it. It's a good preview video but its got my generic JRPG alarm working overtime.
