GameStop: Wii to sell out for third holiday straight photo

I know, I know. How is this news, right? News or not, GameStop has said that the 2008 holiday season will be just as Wii-challenged as the last couple have been.

"I've never seen this type of demand before. I know they're making more, but we're still short like everybody else. I think we'll have a continued shortage this Christmas," said GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo to GameDaily.

"I don't see a near-term end in sight for Wii shortages, not unless they really ramp up supply. I think they've ramped it up 20 percent or so, but Nintendo is fairly cautious by nature. They ramped it up 20 and it's still evaporating."

Here's the thing, though: If retailers already know in September that they'll have shortages in a few months, shouldn't Nintendo be ramping things up right about now?

Here's the other thing: Everyone I know that wants a Wii has one. I guess soccer moms and whatnot are still seeking one out, but I know people that have one just to have one. Will the demand really be as high for the third holiday season? What do you think?

Since it's inception, the Wii has accomplished feats beyond every hater, fan boy and hardcore gamer could ever imagine. Time in and time out numbers tell all. So I think it's safe to put all pride aside and give the system some props for what it has done. I mean it's got Sony and Microsoft duking it out for second place! Suddenly the hardcore gaming scene seems so small. Anyone want to place bets on the focus of Sony and Microsoft's next console iterations :P

Nintendo can take their "shortages" and shove them right up their ass. If their entire business model for the Wii didn't revolve around making a profit on the hardware, they could afford to take a loss on the weak USD when importing Wii and WiiFit. I still say this shortage is artificial and it has been from the start.

And what's worse, blogs STILL give them free marketing on the issue. Everyone knows about the Wii already. No need to inflate it's popularity to make it anything more than merely a novelty.

I still don't know how Wii is sold out but DS isn't, it makes more sense to me.

I'm honestly still shocked this is going on, and to be honest, it's not because Nintendo is "holding back Wii consoles" for North Americans. It's really something where people play it and they like it.

I always tell the story of when I took my Wii to visit my relatives out east in 2007. I brought a few games, mostly oriented towards the new gamer, and within 2 months of my trip, all of my aunts and uncles with kids had bought a Wii. It's ridiculous.

We are getting to be like Japan, everyone in the family has to have one. One in a house is not enough. I agree though, everyone I know (mostly non gamers) have a Wii and plays it, well Wii Sports. Every gamer that I know has a Wii and does not play it.

If that is the case then I better buy out our next shipment of Wii's. That way I can sell them to all the dumbasses that ask me if we have THE BOWLING OR THE BASEBALL game.

HAH! I refuse to give the Wii props for enticing Grandma Betty to play some crappy games.

Seriously, Nintendo's strategy coming into this generation:

Use last gen's graphical power
Do NOT support any resolution higher than 480p
Do NOT include a hdd to store all those cool Virtual Console games.
As for Virtual Console, release a ratio of 3:1 crappy:good games ratio.

For the controller:
instead of pushing B, shake horizontally
instead of pushing A, shake vertically
instead of pushing Y, shake toward the monitor

The 2 best games on the system are best played with the freakin' classic controller...

Yes, I own all 3 systems and yes the Wii is never played. PS3 and 360 share about equal time, but still pale compared to PC.
