GameStop: Trade in Battlefield 3 for Modern Warfare 3 photo

GameStop UK is offering a trade-in deal so utterly ruthless it borders on trolling, allowing customers to trade in Battlefield 3 and receive rival shooter Modern Warfare 3 for practically nothing. All you need to drop is ninety-nine pence!

If you buy DICE's gorgeous looking shooter before October 27, then buy Modern Warfare 3 before November 7, you can send Battlefield 3 back to get your GameStop account refunded -- save for a meager £0.99 charge.

This is even crazier when you consider that Activision bumped up the price of all Call of Duty games in the UK, giving them an RRP of £54.99. So, if you wanted to essentially rent Battlefield 3 and keep Modern Warfare 3, this is a shockingly good deal.

I'd have sympathy for EA but I keep remembering its insistence on using online passes. So screw 'em.

Um, who buys games for £54.99 in the uk? I've never seen a game on sale (barr limited editions) for that much! Madness!

It's just business, man. What's the name of that other store that lets you trade Rage and some other game and get the new Batman for 99p? Same thing.

What the fuck are you talking about Jim? It's still an extra £5. Did you even check the UK retail online stores?

Considering the degraded value of BF3 once the online pass is used, this seems like a great deal (if you somehow don't like the game)

Ouch. I swore off the CoD games as although I do have fun with them, I don't have £55 worth of fun with them. I haven't been totally sold on BF3 either. But with this, they're very tempting.

Considering it costs publishers 99 cents to produce a copy of the DVD disk, they essentially cover their own cost in this deal, and create an environment that gamestop can use to resell used games, at a 5 dollar discount over new.

Ahhh...marketing...Now if only we gamers could just NOT buy either of these games it could be fun to watch EA and Activision self destruct. But that won't happen with massive sales.

Why would you have sympathy for EA?

This might boost sales of BF3 with people who were only planning on buying either BF3 OR CoD, but not both. EA gets paid for a new game either way. Beyond that, all those used copies in the wild means $10 for EA on each purchase, minus the very few who buy it for single-player.

The only real negative is that they might miss out on more long term DLC, but I think it kind of evens out.

Unless this works the other way around, this does seem like a bit of a dick move. And not the good kind, where you go somewhere moist. More like the kind where you hit a blender

Nope. Game and Game Station are owned by a separate company independent from GameStop. And yeah, we have them but not that many.

@pokota: Exactly what I was going to say, those who even only planned to get MW3 now may as well get BF3 to play it for 2 weeks. This boosts day 1/week 1 sales of BF3.

How will Gamestop justify thier used prices for BF3?? The will have to sell it at a price that will factor in the cost the consumer will have pay to buy an online pass because seriously, who buys a Battlefield game for its singleplayer?

The major retailers in the the UK such as GAME, Gamestation and HMV do this same offer with pretty much every new release. There's nothing special about Battlefield but fanboys sure do love to get butthurt.

Yeah, we have Gamestops in Europe, but comparing if you compare the prices on Gamestop with the prices on sites that sells game, Gamestop is expensive as fuck. I mean, there's like a 20£ difference on new games between Gamestop (and other videogame stores like GAME) and buying it somewhere else, atleast here in Sweden.

That's why I only buy used games on Gamestop, that's the only good thing about them imo.

Yeah, if they were doing that thinking they would hurt EA, this was the most stupid move possible. EA will boast a bigger sales figure in firts week.

And as a player, I would feel very relieved to know that all that COD players whow run around as headless chickens never helping with the objectives will stay away from BF3.

Isn't GameStop essentially banking that BF3 will be more popular than MW3?

Because they think that demand for used copies of BF3 will be so high that they'll still make money by giving a new game away for almost free.

OR

Because they're banking that people will buy BF3 with this deal in mind but will like it so much that they'll hang on to BF3 and also buy MW3.

This should prove invaluable to fostering the Battlefield 3 community. The faster all of the CoD bros ship off to the new CoD, the sooner the rest of us can get back to playing Battlefield the way it was meant to be played.

Well it might push BF3's early sales numbers up quite a bit. I mean, if you're wanting to play both, this is a hell of a deal. And if you have to do both new, it kinda helps EA and Activision... and could really help GameStop when the BF3 group have to rebuy their game lol.

This is Gamestop's big fuck you to EA for all the online pass and Origin bullshit. Activision for all their own shit and cut throat practices (mostly with development studios they own really), hasn't even been a quarter as antagonistic to retailers as EA and Ubisoft have been, and Sony is starting to be.
mix's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/20/2011 10:42

I'm sure Gamestop got some money from Activision to do this as it doesn't really help Gamestop at all besides having some used copies of BF3.

1) Wait till BF3 has been out a week.
2) Buy a LOAD of copies from shopto for ~£30 a pop.
3) Trade all in at Gamestop for 99p copies of MW3
4) Sell MW3 copies ASAP on ebay for ~£40

Profit?
