pretty fucking sleazy gamestop
Also, In before jimmyx makes me LOL.
Seems like a lot of companies are pulling jerk moves this week, first EA and now Gamestop, wonder who's next?
PSN, XBL, Steam, Gamestop and others have to decide if they are retailers first... and apparently the resounding answer is no.
Well, this, and 99% of the issues reported by the gaming media. The general public just doesn't care.
It seems like all the big players in gaming based their business models on the concept of infinite growth. Now that the growth that exploded in around 05 is leveling off, everyone is looking to snatch a bigger piece of the pie for themselves to sustain those business models. Business models they are now dependent on.
Shit like this is going to be par for the course.
I've bought a "new" game from Gamestop before, that they opened, and when I realized that (when I got to my car) they wouldn't let me return it for cash... because it was OPENED.
Fuck them. I rarely bought from them as it is, but this burns the bridge for good with me. This is ASININE.
I was just about to say the exact same thing. That is precisely when I stopped shopping at Gamestop.
They have no right to sell it as a complete package, nor as "new".
At least have something to add to the discussion, rather than copy and paste this same sentence into every new post on destructoid. Its not clever or smart or imaginative, it just wastes space.
That being said...
Gamestop is one of those places I hate doing business with, and I will never preorder from them. I will go there to find older games sometimes, or buy things during their "lets sell some mildly awesome games for %50 off" deals.
If they are doing this, and still selling the game as "new" this is bullshit, and they will no doubt be facing lawsuits soon. If they are selling it used, with the mandatory $5 off msrp, I see nothing wrong with it.
Gamestop, or any store, makes a couple of dollars after shipping is factored in. It's not like they're making the full 50 dollars, and it's not like the code was costing any extra money for either them or the consumer. If this story hadn't cropped up, no one would have noticed, and I bet a majority of you wouldn't have used the code anyway.
Does it mean they should be allowed to do this? No. But I also don't see why there's such an outrage over it. You're missing out on a second copy of the same game that they were nice enough to offer you for free. It's not like they removed anything critical, or even anything that people would have normally cared about.
Should we condone it? Of course not, don't buy your games from Gamestop then. But whining about having your free code taken away seems a bit greedy. It's like whining about your new copy of GameX not having the day one bonus DLC because you bought it a month later. You're not paying any extra for it.
It's happened before, someone threatened a suit after they found out employees were being allowed to check out new titles and now their employees are only allowed to check out used products.
EA vs. Steam, game publishers vs. Gamestop and other trade in stores, and now Gamestop vs. OnLive. It's the entire industry that seems to be declaring all out war against each other.
And guess who loses? Us, the consumers.
I jest about OnLive as that I like to have a physical copy of my games, although I understand why it would appeal to people. However, it's a ridiculous dick move for GS to remove something the publisher intended for the consumers to have.
People are being outraged about this because a part of the product that they were supposed to get has been removed. Imagine if Gamestop removed the Steam codes from PS3's Portal 2?
I really despise gamestop but theres no other option for me for day 1 purchases for me.
Ive got stories on how my local gamestop every so often pulls some questionable shit with me and I promptly correct that shit. Id have gone back and gotten that code or had someones job.
Imagine a red skinned son of a bitch with horns, pitchfork, cape, pointed tail and hooves for feet and you have me as a consumer.
It's simply better for your local economy, better for your wallet, and it's the right thing to do as a conscientious consumer.
@SephirothX If I recall correctly, they'd only just bought Impulse from Stardock when Portal 2 came out. I don't think they'd let it happen if the game came out tomorrow.
