GameStop sees record sales, thanks to titles like GTA IV, MGS4 photo

I haven't been to a GameStop in months. Between internet ordering and what is sent to me as a Destructoid reviewer, I just haven't felt the need to visit lately. It does not seem that they're missing me much, though, as they're reporting record sales for Q2.

The company broke sales records, reporting that their net earnings are up 162.1 percent to $57.2 million for the second quarter. For the last quarter ending August 2nd, sales increased by 34.8 percent to $1.80 billion. That's a lot of moms bringing in Little Timmy to "pick out a game, hurry up!"

What sold so well? They said their top five games were Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, NCAA Football 09, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Wii Fit.

According to Gamasutra, GameStop is expecting an even better sales later this year with titles like LittleBigPlanet, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Call of Duty: World at War, Spore, Fable II, Rock Band 2 and Gears of War 2 and more.

Are you still GameStop shopping? Someone is!

That's without even mentioning the fact that Gamestops are springing up like Starbucks used to.

Since I quit working at Best Buy last December, I've been almost exclusively shopping at GameStop. I really have no problems with them whatsoever.

I like gamestop quite a bit actually. I just picked up a used copy of the darkness for... $7.80! Although it is unsettling knowing that they are making entirely too much money on each game the sell, buy back for 25% of the cost, then sell the exact same game again to make even more money. I gotta admit though, I love trading in old DVDs and games for new ones. And the whole buy a used game and trade it back for full value in 7 days is freaking sweet. That's the only way to play alone in the dark...

@brainderailment : Same happens over here in the UK, that's why the only games I buy new are new releases.

Considering most shops that stock preowned games have disk cleaning machines (I know GAME do, and I think Blockbuster and GAMEStation do too) and carry a guarentee then may as well save £5 or so.

This could probably be filed under that captain obvious header. If the gaming industry is reporting record sales then it's probably safe to assume that the people selling those games are going to report record sales.

@brainderailment

Hey, employees hate that system too.
But to be fair, the disks are new. They were simply put into a drawer so they could put the box out on the floor so people know they have it, but can't simply steal it.

Used is a better deal anyhow. You can return it for your fully money back if it sucks (within a week).

And depending on the employees of your particular GameStop (and how well they check games when they get traded in), some used games look good as new.
