GameStop says Nintendo held back Wiis, will have good supply in April photo

Take this for what you will, but according to GameStop COO Dan DeMatteo, Nintendo intentionally held back on their Wii distribution because apparently the company already made the bank they wanted to (see, money > customer). Additionally, DeMatteo claims that April will prove to be a beautiful month for Wii hunters on the prowl.

“I don’t think [Wii supply] going to be an issue going forward, and—it’s just my opinion—I think [Nintendo] intentionally dried up their supply because they made their numbers for the year," said DeMatteo in a Q&A session during GameStop's quarterly conference call. "[Nintendo's] new year starts April 1st, and I think we’re going to see supply flowing.

“We were concerned about the dryness [of Wii inventory] in March, but it looks like April is going to be good,” he said.

"Intentionally dried up their supply"? You think that's true? Could the company really be so sinister? They make Mario games, right, they can't be all that bad.

I can't imagine that would be true. It's cool they made their estimated money back, but why stop there? You'd think a company would want to make more money that it thought would get.

Personally, I say bull-poop.

Definitely sounds very Nintendo-ish thing to do. But hopefully, they follow it up with a solid release, new downloadable content, new channels, and/or price drop/additional free packaged game. But that may be my fanboy wishful thinking.

"(see, money > customer)"

How is this different then any other company. MS? Nope. Sony? Nope.

Panaphonic? Magnetbox? Sorny? Doh!

Does this guy have ANY connections to Nintendo, it's shipping, or any other part of the company? No.

"Hey, some guy said Nintendo is doing something bad. Let's cover it and add some sensationalism cause we love to get fanboys rilled up!"

"Sounds good... Robert, get on it!"

To explain why I said it's very Nintendo-ish. They're about the numbers. They want all their numbers to be better, so that their stock can go up, and fiscal earnings are more even instead of spiking and then a lull (which usually results in lower investment into the company). But, to be honest, it's not a terrible thing to do. The Wii's are still selling out a little, but they're not terribly hard to find any more. April will hopefully just mean no more hunting, and all stores will have them on shelves. Ooh, and one more possible whishlist, maybe they're stockpiling because they're releasing the new colors, and wanted a solid supply of them before releasing. Huh? You know it.

Wait, they decided they didn't want to sell more Wiis and make more money so they stopped shipping them? If Money > Customer (which it is) they would have kept shipping them and made more money. Logic FTW?

There is no logic in the land of speculation.

"the company already made the bank they wanted to'

This has nothing to do with it. Even a cursory understanding of business operations would shed some light on this for the industry knowledge deprived. (read: Summa)

They are trying to even their production across fiscal quarters so as not to create any spikes or valleys in the sales numbers or inventory. Too much or too little is not a good thing for the company OR for the customers. They made predictions based on anticipated demand and those predictions have been exceeded. You can't blame a company for shipping EXACTLY WHAT THEY PROMISED. Well, unless you are drinking Roberts Hateraid. MS and Sony are struggling with these same issues but in Sonys case, they are having the opposite problem. They are making MORE than people want.

From a numbers point of view it would make sense. If you look at it as they have made their money already for the year, why not hold back?

Reason being is that they are then able to post higher numbers for the start of their fiscal year... 4/1

Yeah, it sucks big floppy donkey either way true or false.

What a coincidence, Reggie Fils-Aime's wife happens to be concerned about dryness as well.

What a great way for businesses to think. "Let's not sell what we know people want (while it's still hot), and make them get pissed off and buy the competitor's stuff that's all over the shelf instead?

I understand the peaks and valleys thing, but I don't have to like it.

Personally my main fear with the Wii was that it was so cost effective to produce, that they'd simply make their money back and sometime around 2009 we'd end up seeing a "Wii 2.0" Probably actually named Revolution or some random sea mammal... So holding back the supply... I wouldn't doubt it..

Also an easy way to ensure that sales on games continue at a constant - as gamers who own one will be looking for a reason to use it... And people who just bought it will be sticking with the initial releases and then moving up.. If everyone had one when they wanted, Nintendo would probably see less game sales.

Its all marketing. People seem to forget that games are BIG business. It doesn't make people good or bad. The agenda is the same for all companies to make money and keep a high profile.

This is why I detest fanboys. Game companies and journalists look down on console wars, etc. But when they all retire to the smoky back rooms they are clinking champagne glasses and lighting stogies with our 100 dollar bills.

They don't hate gamers. They don't love them either.

Game companies should be treated like farm labor and not revered as gods. That would lead to less crappy games and a more fair exchange of money for product.

wiitruth.org! I bet the jews are behind it!

I'd wager that the problem is nobody expected the Wii to take off the way it did. With manufacturing, you can't just say "let's make twice as much next month", the amount you are able to make is limited by the factories you have working for you. There's a long supply chain of components to arrange for, and getting a new facility ready for production takes a while. By the time Nintendo were able to line everything up to pump out more Wiis, the rush could already be over and they'd wind up with a huge surplus of systems rotting on shelves.

How did I know Summa would post this? Oh that's right, he's completely predictable. He only posts things that are hating on someone, or sucking someones cock that he owes a favor to.

Im surprised everyone did not think that this is a smart move for nintendo. I woud ship more the upcoming months to, want to know why? Because they have slew of AAA titles coming on the horizon. This will sell those out while still keeping demand high. Then from there ride the wave of success to ship their new and improved wii consoles.

I think they're just selling out. I've been seeing steady and plentiful shipments to all 3 local retailers (EB, Gamestop and Best Buy) and they go like lightening.
