GameStop says goodbye to HD DVD photo

Destructoid has gotten word from an inside source (and confirmation - thanks Liqideos) that GameStop/EB Games will no longer be taking HD DVDs or Xbox 360 HD DVD players as of tomorrow.

Ever since Warner announced it was switching to Blu-ray exclusively, the bad news hasn't stopped piling on for the HD DVD camp. If any of you HD DVD owners out there are thinking about jumping ship, I suggest you do so immediately.

Otherwise, it'll be too late to flip your movie collection for a decent amount of money if you wait much longer. Alternatively, you could always hold on to your fully-functional, yet non-supported high-def movie and use it to upscale DVDs. I'm just saying.

Been waiting for a final result so I can actually start an HD movie collection. Seems like Blu-Ray is gonna win after all.

Meh. I've got a pretty decent HD-DVD collection that isn't going anywhere. No point in getting rid of them as long as I have a player for them and I'd actually be glad to pick up more once stores start clearing them out. I'll be glad to see the format war over, although I'm certainly not happy with the result.

I definitely won't be switching the Blu-Ray any time soon though. The format hasn't matured enough and the blue boxes are so damned ugly.

@HarassmentPanda: But the PS3 is so...sleek and sexy.

It appears that Toshiba is officially going to announce in a few hours that they’re stopping production of HD DVD players and discs, so this decision makes sense.

@BrOnXbOmBr

The PS3 isn't at a place where I'm willing to buy it yet--needs games I actually want to play. But, it would certainly be my Blu-Ray player of choice at this point because it's the only one that is currently updatable.

It's nice to know that early adopters of both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are screwed now considering that first gen Blu-Ray players are incompatible with the newer profile's features and Blu-Ray didn't have the foresight that HD-DVD did to require ethernet ports and onboard storage for future updates.

I just ordered a computer with a hybrid drive so I've already picked up Shaun of the Dead on HD-DVD for only $12. I'm going to love the clearances.

Hopefully you buy a PS3 and not an early stand alone...The early stand alones can't be upgraded.

Might as well hold on to them. You won't get much money if you sell them back, there are a couple years left on the RROD warranty, and if you give up on the 360 you can always use the add on drive on a PC with a little unofficial software.

@HarassmentPanda:

I'm with you 100%. I got my HD-A2 player when it was $98 at Wal-Mart. I probably wouldn't have HD otherwise, not because I can't afford it but because it doesn't have the value to me at a higher price considering how little I watch DVDs.

It will now take me a hell of a long time to buy a PS3 because if I didn't have much value for HD players over $100, I sure as hell am going to have far less value on a $400 player that I have effectively been FORCED into buying now for HD media. No, thanks. My HD DVD player is also an excellent upscaler. I'll stick with that.

I will definitely hit up GameStop, though.

So as not to spread FUD, only certain features will be incompatible with later releases. The movies themselves will play no matter what if the players is a 1.1 profile BR player.

It's not just HD-DVDs we're not taking anymore, it's any movies. DVDs, HD-DVDs, Bluray, VHS, all of it. The only thing we still take in is UMDs.

The ps3 is pretty much the cheapest blue ray player you can buy, and its upgradeable so you don't have to worry about features not being added. What I like to read is people saying that there aren't any games out on the ps3 they want to play, which in reality may be the case, but they never say which games they like to play, or go into any other explanation. Makes me chuckle. Guess what I don't like the 360 because there aren't any games I like to play on it. Um...ok sir can you elaborate on that? No, I don't like to think further because that part of my brain is owned by Microsoft. I don't think I could be anymore vague than that other than blind fanboyisms.

I saw a ticker on G4 the other day that mentioned that Toshiba may be dropping the HD-DVD format early. Seems pretty significant, seeing how, well, they make the DRIVES.

But seriously, no need to beat a dead horse. With the exception of wanting a heads-up on cheap, obsolete hardware, we really don't need more news like this.

Oh well..time to start packing my DVD rack w/ HD-DVD's now that retailers will be clearing them out. I've still got 5 free HD-DVD's coming, so my little collection won't be half-bad. Now I get to reap the rewards of dirt cheap hi def movies. Then I'll start getting Blu-Ray when the prices come out of the $30 area.

If I see a cheap HD DVD add on I may be tempted to pick one up. The format may be dead but there's a good chance you could rip movies off the discs using the add on.

point me to the HD-DVD sales!
i have a PS3 and the 360 with HD add-on
luckily, i saw how things were headed and focused on Blu-Ray for my collection
but I'll be keeping my HD-DVDs around a bit longer until some of them are no longer HD exclusive
(what can i say, i like the movie 'Stardust')
