GameStop puts employees in fat suits, people rush to buy fitness games photo

Today, GameStop employees -- under corporate guidance, nonetheless -- proved that there is something worse than annoying potential customers with uninvited videogame commentary. In a publicity stunt for GameStop’s new “Sharpen the mind and shape up the body” initiative, two employees stalked a few Los Angeles shopping centers with fat suits on.

The goal was to show people that being overweight isn’t pretty and that videogames like Wii Fit or Dance Dance Revolution could help burn calories. Something tells me that the employees failed to prove that point. As for the mind portion of the puzzle, it’s likely that the fat-suit-wearing couple were able to illustrate what happens when too many brain cells shrivel.

Keep up the good work, GameStop. I'm sure the exposed people marched right into your stores and bought the targeted merchandise.

On the one hand, I'm all for game store(s)* doing silly stuff like this. It's a very rare occurrence in a day and age when games, gamers, and game stores are taking the hobby way too seriously at times. On the other hand, do Wii Fit sales really need whatever help this was supposed to provide? I say, save the effort for inflatable penguin suits just in case they bring Let's Tap over here.

*Hang in there, Game Crazy!

Also, what if you're an employee who's already fat?

This was a dumb thing to do - If you are of a large size, you are not going to enjoy being told that you are ugly, or have your situation made fun of. If you're thin or of medium weight, you're not going to need the product in the first place, and two guys in fake fatsuits isn't going to convince anyone.

Having FIT people advertise the game would be a better idea, although I seriously doubt many people who are overweight or unfit would honestly think a videogame could change their life around.

Disrespectful and offensive? I excuse those that have a real genetic problem or something like that, but those who eat all day long, have 2 whole pizzas for dinner and barely move any muscles other than their hands and disrespectful towards their bodies and have an offensive odour and offend my eyes.

"That young man in the fat suit has helped me to realize my own out of control obesity. I will certainly purchase software for my video game console of choice that will aid me in my attempts to better myself physically, and in turn mentally, emotionally, and socially. Possibly politically as well.

It has nothing to with overweight gamers, it has to do with women. Why do you think all the marketting for "Sharpen Your Body, Sharpen Your Mind" has pictures of women. And look at the promotions as well. If you buy over $30 some worth of merchandise, you get a free 12 month subscription to a magazine such as Redbook, Oprah, Cosmo, etc. Its a sales pitch aimed for the employee to sale merchandise that appeal to women. It seems to sterotype them into playing only certain type of games.
