It's no secret that people are putting a lot of stock in Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2. Evil publisher Activision believes it will dominate this holiday season, and retail chain GameStop agrees, going so far as to say that the shooter could become the biggest game in history.
"We expect Modern Warfare 2 could be the best selling title of all time," says Tony Bartel, EVP of Merchandising and Marketing. He points out that pre-orders for the game have been incredibly strong, and that many customers upgraded their base copies to the Prestige Edition once it was announced, which is a "very good sign."
Bartel has also named Halo 3: ODST and Assassin's Creed 2 as two other titles he believes will drive videogame sales through the holidays. Both will likely do incredibly well, but let's face it, with most big games being pushed back 2010, there's not much competition left.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Sure, it could be a great little game, but it's just another copypasta FPS, theres no way it can have much originality or innovation.
I am so sick of first person shooters dominating the market. It's getting ridicolous. Seriously, stop it with the CoD's! They're all the fucking same!
I know I won't be disappointed with Cod6 since its a tried and true formula, hence I know exactly what I'm getting.
An once again, I am confounded by the image of this post.
Also, that lobster is making me drool. So hungry now....
@Xhumation
The UK price hike will make literally no difference at all, the main, intended market for this type of game will still buy it. Joe average won't care if it's 55 quid, seeing as one of the few games s/he will buy this year. You might get a few gamers not buying it on principle, but they are in the extreme minority. I know I am getting it. Oh and KZ2 sold quite well in japan, even though it was a shooter, expect this to do much better.
@ Nathaniel607
I do hope you have the way in which you will kill yourself planned out, because this will sell millions. There is no need for such retarded comments, God forbid that you can actually have good or great shooters on the market, no, let's sweep them all under the 'no originality or innovation' umbrella. Don't forget that COD4 actually won a Bafta, due to the very fact that the committee decided it's story was original and it was innovative. Whenether you like it or not, it is a brilliant game, as seen by all the critical acclaim poured on it and the millions it sold. The fact it, you don't need innovation or originality in a game like this, people are expecting a great shooter, and with all the stuff I have seen so far, they will get one. So your point is moot.
Shut your trap and keep your whining about FPS to yourself, there here to stay, and you can't do a damn thing about it.
Biggest game of all time = OOT, nuff said.
To beat Wii Sports, they'd have to sell more MW2's than how many Wii's were sold. Is that even possible?
I still can't believe people are saying this is going to be the most important game ever. No. It. Won't. Be.
That's like saying Harry Potter 6 is the most important literary work since Grapes of Wrath, or MacBeth.
DAMN RIGHT!
It's just shooting shit. I've never understud why people like them so much.
I'm not buying it unless Kotick lets me fuck his wife.
Yes it is another FPS, you could say that. Many people enjoy a good, realistic shooter, and many could arguably say that the first Modern Warfare was one of the best. I'm mainly excited about it because I'll be getting back with my clan. I didn't get WOW because I thought at the time it came out that I was all set with WWII FPS's. Launch day is very exciting for a game like this. In the days leading up to launch, you toss the prequel in and bone up on the controls. On launch day, rushing home after Gamestop then opening up your friends list to see your core group of virtual friends are already playing. They see you pop up and send the invite. You hop in the lobby and everyone starts telling you how awesome this or that board is. The lobby closes and you are in. All the new maps to explore and disect are at your mercy. I'm getting a little excited about it just typing this(as you could probably tell by all the fragments)
In closing,
you have every right to not like FPS's, but many people love the genre, and don't bag on your preferences.
Yes...because only games that have originality or innovation are worthy of being best sellers.
Hell, people still buy CoD4 en masse, and it still retails near full price.
Personally, I'm looking forward to this game. CoD4 was one of the best, more original FPS's ever made. That's saying something for a genre that spews mediocrity on a regular basis. If you don't like it fine, but don't be negligent to actual facts, or you're no better than a troll.
"It's just shooting shit. I've never understud why people like them so much."
Seriously? This has to win stupidest comment of the year award. Have you ever actually played any CoD games? Or any FPS games in general? Have you played them with friends (if you have any)? They are actually pretty damn fun.
On topic, I'm not getting COD simply because I'm boycotting Activision. So I guess my "shooting shit" money will be going to Halo: ODST. I guess it's just "shooting shit" too though. Thanks, Nathaniel, you've showed me the light.
You don't know Nathaniel, maybe he's Japanese. :P
The STORY won a bafta. The game itself was not exacly a fucking breakthrough. No one can argue that.
@RICHARD BLOCKER
Again, I was just saying it won't be amazinngly innotavite. I realise some people like it (though I can't figure out why...) but it's not going to be "the biggest game in history".
I am quite afraid that the market in 20 years will be just shooters.
Yes, I have played them. I don't find them very fun, I played CoD4 for about 2 months. It's basically IS just "shooting shit", running around, and calling in planes, and hiding in cover, and hearing stupid Americans (not saying all are stupid, just the stupid ones [same with racist]) argue with french people going "LOLZ" and then shooting some more shit and reloading some shit and then grenading some shit.
I love the fact you called my comment "moronic" yet didn't actually manage to debunk my statement that FPS were just "shooting shit", all you said was that they were "pretty damn fun".
Nathaniel seems to misunderstand the whole genre and why CoD4 revolutionized it. Besides the fantastic story, the multiplayer dragged console people away from the kiddy (maybe not kiddy, but silly) FPS Halo 3, and showed them a photo-realistic, modern FPS, with the tightest controls ever seen on a console. The innovations are there, the controls, the rankings, the rpg elements, even new game modes. And the best thing that XBOX LIVE offers, playing with friends, brought the whole thing together. And while a lot of these things had been used before on computers, CoD4 took all these parts, put them together and made a damn near perfect game. If you don't like FPS's thats fine, but don't try to say that this is an average game, because if it's anything like CoD4, it will be a fan-bloody-tastic shooter.
Halo ODST can go fuck itself.
Okay, CoD4 might have revolutionised it a bit, but... MW2 will probably be the same as CoD4, and if it is, it won't revolutionise shit.
@GoldenGamerXero
"If you want to be heard as a gaming critic, Destructoid is a great place to do it."
unfortunately I think the 'silly' Halo series is more fun and has better controls. I much prefer Halo 3 as you can have both 'silly' games, and more serious, intense, competitive games. I'm also a fan of the fiction and for that reason I will be buying ODST over MW2. The fact that it's £20 less is pretty handy too.
Also MW2 won't become the best selling game of all time but it will sell a hell of a lot of copies. I just hope more people in the UK make a stand against this price hike and persuade retailers to drop it to something more acceptable not too long after release.
I don't know, a lot of things bother me about Halo 3. The biggest is that I can't play it online because I don't like to waste 10 dollars every couple months for maps that aren't anything special. I definitely like the way the Call Of Duty games deal with that (if you don't have the map, you and your party don't play on it). Don't get me wrong, Halo is a lot of fun playing with friends, but it's unrealistic, the controls aren't as tight (I don't care what you say, they aren't), and ODST is not something I can justify spending 60 dollars on.
And BTW, by buying it used, like many people in the UK plan to, you screw over the developer who worked so hard on the game. Activision might be bordering on super-villein levels right now, but in this case it makes more sense to wait for the price drop, then screw over the developers.
@Nathaniel607
Not all games have to be revolutionary... if that's you're standard have fun playing 1 game a year. All Modern Warfare 2 has to do is be better than CoD4. If it does that, then it will be the most played game on XBOX LIVE, PSN, and computer for two years.
