GameStop looks into crystal ball, sees price cuts photo

Sony can deny and deny all they want, but no one is ever going to believe that they won't be cutting the price of the PS3 some time this year. In fact GameStop is so sure that a price cut is coming on the PS3, and possibly the Wii, that they're making their 2009 budgets based around the fact. Speaking during a conference call to investors, CEO Daniel DeMatteo revealed the company's forecast of 33.5 million hardware unit sales was factoring in price cuts on both the Wii and the PS3.

"That assumes that there will be price cuts on the PS3 and potentially one on the Wii," DeMatteo said, but admitted that "it’s hard to tell if we actually need a price cut on the Wii to get to our numbers. There are some price cuts built into that assumption, but not until the third quarter."

DeMatteo sites a number of factors that will lead to the price cut, first a foremost being the high price tag of the consoles in an economic depression. On top of this DeMatteo notes that the price point of some systems has stayed the same for far longer than is usual, meaning a drop would be very prudent for reigniting sales. So will we all be rushing out to pick up that console we don't own yet come this third quarter or will Sony and Nintendo stick to their guns?

I hope there's a PS3 price cut at some point. I do want to pick up some things they have on it, but that price point is just too steep for me right now. We'll see.

I don't have a 360 yet, but I don't forsee another drop in that that would make it tasty enough to buy

Will GameStop/EB Games drop the price of games if Sony drops their console price?? I was in an EB Games yesterday and they were selling a used PS3 Naruto game for $65 CDN among others. Even if you can afford a console, you can't keep spending so much on games in this economy. I haven't bought a game since KZ2 on launch day. Oh and those motherfuckers still don't have Valkyria Chronicles in, nor does anyone else!!

I might blow some of my student loan on a PS3 if there's a price cut. I'd be more excited if they would put full backwards compatibility back in, but that's not likely to happen.

There might be some validity to this--Gamestop's word tends to be good when they're not trying to buy your games off of you for a shiny new nickel.

I wish there was GameStop here.
I would sell my soul to the Devil to pay only U$300 for a 360.

@hiddenAHB

while you're selling your soul why not get a free 360?

Also, Price drop FTW

Gamestop can float and sputter, but now that ScrewAttack has a store of their own, GS's days are numbered.

Am I the only person who doesn't think the PS3 is going to get another price cut so soon? It's already been cut by a pretty significant amount from launch, and it's only a couple years old.

Sony is an honorable company and what they say is golden. They will never break their word. There will be no price drop because their fans and customers are fine with the price.

@Chronic Logic

Oh man, you're so right. All of the people who've already bought one are fine with the price. Welp, Sony's business model is now obviously a success, what with everyone who's happy with paying too much money having bought their console, they're dominating the market!
