GameStop exclusive Halo 3 Zune available for pre-order, details photo
     Zune

Back before Zune's launch, GameStop was pretty gung-ho about supporting Microsoft's digital media device. While I'd be remiss to call GameStop's decision to carry the Zune a failure, the anecdotal evidence of every GameStop/EB in my area still having some first shipment Zune players paints an ugly picture.

But nothing can stop the power of the Halo brand, apparently, as the Halo 3 Zune will be hitting GameStop/EB stores exclusively, starting on June 15. The player (which retails for $249.99, like the traditional Zune SKU) not only sports the Halo 3 branding, but also comes pre-loaded with a truckload of Halo goodies, including soundtracks, videos, and more (no Cortana nudie pictures, though).

Hit the jump for the full rundown.

Who cares about nude cortanas?

Everyone who gets a Zune, only buys it for teh ghey pr0n...

That's why everyone on D'toid who owns one bought one, amirite?

I opted for an ipod instead. The manly man's man's mp3 player. For tentacle pr0n.

No one owns a Zune. They're huge, the battery life sucks, and you won't be able to use it's only unique feature - "squirting" - because nobody else owns a Zune. There are lots of options that are far more time tested and support more formats. Zune is just M$ coming after the iPod most unsuccessfully. If you're one of those "I'm too cool to own an iPod" folks, get a creative player, or one of the many other HD based options. The Zune is just a failure looking for a failee.

Zune: Has a decent rental program, so you flat fee your music, and use the service's selections as you see fit.

Has a decent sized screen for video.

Zune cons: The device won't work with iTunes (duh, I know, but some people didn't know this), nor does it work with any Plays for Sure music stores.

The Zune software sucks ass.

The Zune can't be used as an external HDD.
The wireless music sharing restriction thing is about as fucking lame as it gets.
-------------------

iPod pros:
It's an ipod, so it has itunes behind it.
The ipod is really forgiving in accepting formats. Music has like a dozen import options. Video supports up to 640X480 resolution (about as high as the average TV torrent) on MPEG-4.

iPods can be used as external drives.
iPods are readily available second hand from Apple whores (like myself) who buy new ipods twice a year.

iPod cons:

Will likely lead you to purchasing at least one Mac computer at some point in the future. (they're expensive!!!)
The screen will make you go blind when watching video.
It is prone to scratching, even if you never touch it.
The included headphones suck MAJOR ass.

I bought my brother a Zune for christmas last year and he absolutely loves it. He hasn't had a single problem with it since getting it, unlike the Ipod I had bought for him the year before, which stopped working roughly...I dunno, 3 months later.

Without Cortana bewbs I won't get this tho.

The lack of external HDD killed the Zune in my eyes.

That and that it'll never ever ever be supported on OSX.

BAH.

I grabbed one of these when my iPod died, and now I'll probably never go back.

I love my Zune. Never really had any issues with it. Screen is bigger, easier to watch yer vids. And unlike my GF's iPod, my Zune still looks new(plastic case stays nicer longer than the metal ones iPods come in). Works great with Vista right out of the box, no "patches" from multiple companies to get it to run right.

-> Hexen: You use vista, so your judgement cannot be trusted. The subliminal messages MS transmit through it deceive your senses.

I use creative. It works.

@tazarthayoot

y'know, you could have just made a warrenty claim on that ipod... it would have saved you a few hundred dollars... warrenty i think is about a year... an additional 2 years if you get an apple care plan; really just because you got bad luck the first time doesn't mean it happens all the time; my first ipod lasted ithink over 2 years (i should have gotten the apple care)

Y'know what i'm waiting for, when it is affordable for them to stop using HardDrive tech in the larger mp3 players and use Flash memory tech... you can get the flash in smaller players, but not the really large ones... Flash disc tech is much more durable compared to HD tech

@Monte

I did, and replaced it like twice before I just said fuck it. Surprisingly enough, the one company that I've never had problems with the hardware breaking down was Microsoft. The zune works great, my computer I've never really had a serious problem with, and my 360 is the greatest machine evar.

I love my Zune and it CAN be used as an external hard drive. You have to change one line of code in your registry and if you don't know how to do that there's a ton of one-click programs out there that will do it for you. Then you can drag & drop until your heart is content.

Any word if these will still be around by the time the Zune's will get a bigger hard drive? The 30gb hard drive is the only thing that keeps me from getting one. I have a 60gb ipod, but after the headphone jack broke and Apple wanted $217 to fix it I've been eying a Zune for a while. 30gb is a good sized hard drive but I'm so used to having so much space on my ipod that it'd be hard to get used to a smaller hard drive.

@HarassmentPanda

And changing that one registry line is enough for me. I don't gotta do jack to have it work with my iPod. Additionally, my iPod works on OSX. I don't want Vista bleeding into my home. It's bad enough that the US Govt can tap my internet, I don't need MS telling them what I downloaded from torrents.

@ 908peruvian- i asked a friend at work the other day who has a zune what make it "better than ipod" he said firmware. that night his zune crashed 6 times between 10 and 4:30.

also another co worker who had one got his destroyed the first time he dropped it, mean while i've dropped my ipod on the street, on tile floor twice, on the same cementish floor he did twice and mine runs like a dream still. the hold switch is kinds screwy since the first time i've dropped it but i don't use it that much to begin with.

It's all bullshit. The tiny HDDs in the music devices corrupt data like crazy, or fail. Or corrupt data for a while, then fail. They all need regular "re-installs" which is a HD restore and a firmware flash, ipod, zune, creative, whatever. That, and they only last a couple of years. It's about how your laptop would act if you took it with you everywhere, and just kinda let it josle around on the seat next to you while you rock out. Can't wait until flash is big enough, cheap enough, and can stand to be rewritten a little more often, we can finally start kicking those delicate little disks to the side.
