It's nuts they filled up so fast. Are there any estimates of how many systems Nintendo is going to have at launch?
from the sounds of how long it took them to release a date and price, i wonder if they will be shorting shipments to create buzz like they did with the wii. so later on when more "magically" appear at stores again, everyone goes nuts buying one in hopes they dont miss out on the next big gaming fad.
Eh. I can wait until Pikmin 3 comes out. I'm going to get one, but there is nothing there I have to play immediately.
All I have to do is walk into my local Walmart on launch midnight and buy one. Preorders are irrelevant for me.

Best Buy started their pre-orders the day after GameStop. Their website wanted you to pay full price to pre-order, but I went to my local store after work and pre-ordered the Premium system there for $5.
Still not fully decided on buying the system or not (though I likely will even if I'm not as thrilled about it as I was the Wii), but it's nice to know I'm good to go when launch day comes.

maybe i should jump on the ebay band wagon and scoop up a bunch of these knowing i will never play it, so i can sell them to stupid parents on ebay for 1000$
I still don't see why people have to buy something the day/ month is comes out. I mean why not just wait about a year so they work out bugs, announce a new model, annnnd by that time hopefully there'll be more then one or two games to get.
I put myself on the wait list. It's basically a preorder for the second shipment, whenever it arrives.
I don't think any of the games I want even come out on launch day anyway, so I can wait.

This assumption really confuses me... I thought the whole reason was a runaway hit was that no one saw it coming. How could they have limited numbers for the purpose of driving up demand if they didn't even now demand would be that great in the first place?
I could see them trying that with the wiiu(though I doubt it after the 3ds launch) but the Wii? It doesn't add up...

Who the hell is buying this? what is the title that screams "I MUST HAVE A WII U?" I just don't get it. Am I getting to old for Nintendo (I hope that's not the case)? I just don't see this system offering me anything but a region lock (and I own all the previous systems and enjoy them all, not a PS3/xbox fanboy per say). Buying a Nintendo product based on OH SNAP BUT ZELDA EVENTUALLY AND MAYBE SMASH BROS is no longer doing it for me. My launch day 3DS is a reminder of Nintendo's promises.
This is the first time in a long while that i've considered purchasing a nintendo console. will it play original wii games? there are a handful of those that i'd like to play so if it does then i'll probably be an early adopter rather than a someday, maybe.

It only costs money if you're PowerUp Rewards PRO, don't mislead people! Regular PowerUp Rewards is FREE.

and why was it so available in europe and japan, but so out of stock in the US? what about retailers claiming nintendo told them to hold off on selling some stock after certain days to help build more stock to sell again later in the week?
if sales slowed down in japan and europe so fast why not stall those markets and ramp up distribution in the US? its not like the wii's guts were technologically advanced and the parts were in short supply. so youre gonna tell me it takes them 2.5 years to meet that demand? bullshit. for the longest time i heard about all kinds of shortages, but everyone was buying them, yet i never knew anyone personally who had one. the people buying up tons of the system to sell them on ebay at higher prices knew it would be a big seller, why didnt nintendo?

not to mention at the time the US dollar was getting weaker thanks to the recession. so nintendo decided to send more and more units to europe and japan because they knew they could make money there, where as in the US people were limited with cash flow, so they didnt want to risk loose money in the US if people wernt buying them.

Not too worried, there's not enough to make me want to buy one at launch though I will probably pick it up around the time Bayonetta 2 comes out.
@fetus: You may be on to something, because you can STILL pre-order at gamestop.co.uk, even the Deluxe!! Of course it won't help you due to region locking.
@Fetus - Artificial shortage or not, it seems to consistently work out for Nintendo when things go this way.

I might get it once Bayonetta 2 is out. Or maybe Mario Kart. Actually I will get one when its $250. Maybe.

1: Full of shit and trying to trick you into buying paid rewards cards.
2: Extremely uninformed about their own job.

I'd so try to get a Wii U if I had the moneys. Im buying it because
1) It's Nintendo and it's next gen
2) it has the potential to have the best launch ever if things go according to plan.

This sucks, I was going to go preorder later today. Now it appears I probably can't get one at all until next year without paying a couple hundred extra bucks.

I have the feeling that you haven't put mush thought to the whole "global distribution" thing.
Here's a simple way to see it: Wii's were made in China, then distributed to countries that have different import laws and restrictions, specially when it comes to China.
Also, there's something called "market allocation". Basically, Nintendo has to "guestimate" how much each region will buy of the product, which means they'll set it wrong sometimes. Extra shipments take time and you can't just take stock on stores on one area and mover it to another; that costs money.
In simple terms, just because one region still has stock doesn't mean all regions should have stock. That's a tinfoil hat theory.

No surprise really. You probably had to have been waiting on the site for the button to light up, or at their doorstep to get in on it... So much easier (and a relief) having decided not to early adopt this and wait a year or two before even attempting to get one.

Eh, fuck it. It can wait. I'm not waiting in front of Gamestop for 6 fucking hours in the freezing cold on black Friday like I did for the Wii.

If no one bought a console because the launch titles suck, no one would ever buy a console. And I don't know about you, but ZombiU, Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed 3 seems like a pretty good launch to me. I know, I know, you'll say, "But you can get those games on ps3 or 360?!" Yes, but I want a new console as I'm tired of this gen.
Not much to say about this except that I missed waiting in line to pre-order like I did with the Wii. Yes you read that right, I missed being able to wait in line for a product that wasn't even being released a the time. We were all in line in the cold, waiting for a machine that we thought was going to change gaming forever. Whether that was true or not in retrospect, I felt like a part of a community... only for that community to fall apart when nobody wanted to exchange 5,000 digit friend codes, go figure.
Is this the U.S.? because I went into EB Games this morning around 11:00 and was able to pre-order the deluxe.

1.: we started taking preorders on Thursday, the 13th. by 6:00 p.m. the next day, we were all ordered to stop taking preorders for the $349 32gb model, and, if I'm not mistaken, Saturday was the last day we were able to reserve the 8gb basic model. so yeah, we literally took preorders on the 32gb model for a day and a half.
2.: you DO NOT need a paid PowerUp Rewards card to get on the wait list. you can get on the wait list with the basic PUR card, which is completely free!
and to elaborate on said list, basically, we were allowed another allotment of preorders from Nintendo, but the wait list is our way of getting rough estimates for the demand of the product. if you get on the wait list, it's not a 100% guarantee that you'll get a system (like the preorder was), but it's the best thing you could do right now.
