GameStop aiming for casual audience, may stock less

I may have bitched in the past about poor or overzealous service, overcrowded retail locations or employees that all look strangely alike when talking about GameStop in the past. But honestly, this is bad news for GameStop if it means what I think it means. Maybe I had complaints before, but at least I knew I could rely on them when I had to buy Persona 3. Now according to a recent meeting between GameStop corporate and Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian, GameStop's focus for 2008 has changed. Here's some of the brainwash talk:

"...Management indicated that the company is making progress in broadening its consumer base as videogames move into the mainstream, and there is broad consumer demand for Nintendo platforms (Wii and DS)...We note that merchandising to a broader consumer audience will remain a strategic priority for GameStop into 2008."

GameStop has mentioned retooling the store layouts before, saying "it is no longer only the hardcore gamer who knows exactly what he wants." Talk about foreshadowing. These sods open an average of 500 stores a year, so expecting them to care about the needs of the core gamers is like waiting for a cafeteria worker to come heat up your cold soup.

I expect GameStop could very well go the way of Nintendo, aiming to please the new demographic they have captured with the Wii. Two words for you, people: total disappointment. Also, if any of you GameStop employees come after me in the comments, may your God help you if you try to explain some tripe to me about why this is a good thing without having your proof at the ready.

I never shop at GameStop. Prices are always higher than the local Best Buy, selection consists of mostly used games you either already own or never want to play, and the people tend to be at least a month behind on their game knowledge.

Hardcore gamers are less of their market now. We're not stupid enough to buy their shit at full price, or their overpriced used games. The internet makes it much easier and cheaper to get what you want. Only casual gamers I think would be regular customers because they don't know what they're doing.

Sounds like a bad idea to me. Doesn't the wii have the worst attach rate for sales? Seems like they would open themselves up for someone like Bestbuy (who I think are still playing with the idea of used games) to come in and really steal the market from them completely.

I don't think this will really affect anything...you can still get games there...what is the problem?

Boo gamestop. While I love games that are approachable, and sometimes arcadey, I know that the gamestop definition is Singstar, Hannah Montana, and Gouge-Me-In-The-eyes-already movie licensed games.

I do all my gaming through gamefly, the "keep it" function is a cheap gamer's delight. I just got rock band for $35.

I pretty much just buy my games online anyways, either of way of direct download or get them shipped to me. The video game stores by me are just so clueless that I can't rely on them anymore.

I used to shop at Gamestop when before I went to college because it was the only place nearby, and during college I just ordered online. Now that I've graduated, I've actually found BestBuy to be way better. They have things in stop more often, the employees aren't obnoxious preorder pushing douchebags, and I can preorder for store pickup online and go get it during work.

Gamestop has always sucked, and now it's just getting suckier.

Does this mean the space for PC games, which has gone from full walls down to a single section down to a single shelf, may finally be reduced to an actual singularity?

I'm glad I got what I wanted from them before this.
They were the only place around that carried games like Disgaea and Killer 7.

Doesn't really bother me too much, though, there's always best buy, and the internet.

Seriously, this is why whenever I need a "hardcore" game, I go to my local game shop. The guys there know where to find anything I need, and the prices are ALWAYS better than Gamestop

There is NO fucking hardcore/casual divide. That shit is a trend and a myth and anybody who believes in it is a fucking moron.

Translation: Most casual gamers will be bamboozled to buy more shit from them than hardcore gamers.

BTW: Gamestop sucks.

Meh...the last game I bought at a GameStop was Madden NFL 2005 (Collector’s Edition) on the PS2, and that was in August 2004. I’ve long since switched to Best Buy (Reward Zone points FTW!)

Agreed, the whole classification of hardcore/casual is just buzzword bullshit. In the context of the article, it means Gamestop is going to drop risky games such as no more heroes, shadow of the colossus, or anything else that strives to be original.

The Xbox 360 sells GAMES. When the PS3 start kicking into high gear, it will sell GAMES.

The Wii, so far, sells the most systems but we all know what its attach rate is like. Most people seem perfectly happy just with Wii Sports. GameStop's jumping on this stupid bandwagon and I hope it bites the chain in the ass.

I'm not going to worry about this until I actually see my local GameStop/EB Games stop stocking "hardcore" games. I actually really like my two local stores because they're the only place I can get old PS2 and GameCube games in person.

If it does screw all that up, well... shit.

I can never count on Gamestop to have a game I want anywhere near release day. They usually only order preorders + 1 or 2 for release days.

But you have to expect it. They don't make too much of a margin on games, peripherals are where its at. And who buys peripherals, magazines, game guides, and other useless shit? Casual gamers/people buying gifts for a gamer. Who doesn't buy all that shit? People who hate Gamestop (i.e. "core" gamers).

Agree with sterling, there are games that many people like and there are games that loyalists like. Both types of games are self sustained through their healthy sales regardless of any media label.

This is of course nothing new, go through any entertainment industry and you will find the same - monthly comics bought by the loyalists, graphic novels bought by far more. Summer blockbusters watched by millions, Coen Brothers films wtached by loyalists. Girls Aloud bought by millions, Radio head bought by loyalists.

Both markets work and one doesn't interfere with the other. There is no problem and I wish people would stop getting worked up about something which is perfectly normal.

This probably just means that when they redo the store layout more space will be giving to the Wii and DS sections as opposed to the other sections. While at the sime time ordering more copies of titles for these systems instead of ordering the five copies of Persona 3 that they normally would have.

Either way if you find an obscure game coming out you always can just reserve it....I mean they throw that down at you might as well use it.

How does this affect hardcore gamers? It isn't like the place stocks Colecovision or or Odyssey games. To me, that'd be a hardcore gamers store.

Even then, with a lot of 8-bit/16-bit/even 32-bit games finding their ways on current gen downloads or portables, it isn't like you NEED Gamestop to find some classic game. Unless you "gotta have" that SNES version of Ballz. Not that they'd stock that either.

I stopped buying from gamestop along time ago. I just buy everything off amazon now -_-.

seems kinda of odd though. It seems to me that casual gamer is the kind that is likely to buy 1-5 games in a year. I've alot of friends in that casual niche who bought a wii when it came out and actually haven't bought any games for it. they play a little wii sports here and there, but the more or less don't touch the thing at all. on the other hand, the more "serious" gamer likely buys 1-5+ games in a month.

I already do not want to deal with any of the "mainstream" audience that the wii/ds sales bring into my store half the time (i do in fact work for gamestop as a game advisor), what makes them think that i will want to deal with them when we cater to them more. If this is how it will turn out then i know alot of people who come into my store will not be coming if we dont carry some of the more hardcore titles.
I kinda wish the opposite would happen (and yes this is but a pipe dream due to how corporates work; expecially gamestop and how they want to make as much money as possible) in that we would not carry the carnival games and the bargain bin of crap that is most of the wii lineup.

I buy from Gamestop because I have no choice, my island has no best buy or anything like that, hell we just got a circuit city(gonna have to check them out), thankfully I know the people that work there by a first name basis so they aren't pre-order this and that with me.

Although it annoys me when I ask someone "Do you have this game?" And they tell "Only for pre-orders" then I ask another employee and they tell me that they have a plenty in stock.

I have been buying from amazon mostly lately because what happens when you order from Gamestop is they give you a release date then when you go there to pick up your game, its not there, it will be in the next day, so you go back the next day and its still not there and yet you have to go back again. This wastes gasoline which is VERY expensive here now and wastes time that you could be using to play another game. Amazon ships the game right to your door and for anything over 25$ they do not charge shipping so that covers most game purchases. Their prices are almost always a buck or 2 less than Gamestop as well. Even if you can't get a game from amazon there are a million other game retailers out there and most only charge about 3$ shipping per game, it becomes more economical to pay the 3$ shipping rather than to make 3-4 trips to the Gamestop store just trying to get your game.

Gamestop USED to be GREAT for pre-orders, wait that was EBgames (Gamestop still used paper slips back then which meant your preorder could get lost, which was bad). Remember when they actually used to call your house to tell you that a game was in instead of having an automated voice do it? I was getting such good service from them that one day I actually had people from a gamestop store call me to talk to me about games that I might be interested in preordering, this was several years ago though.

I also notice a disturbing trend about Gamestop employees, they ALL seem to have the exact same personality and they are almost the same size and look almost the same too, and this is across many stores. Its like they only hire a certain type of person for the job. Its like Gamestop has brainwashed a whole section of our young people!

As far as the original article, I think they have already alienated their hardcore audience with their policies, selling opened games as new and selling used games in very poor condition without the cover and manual. Most of the smart people have moved on to shopping online because its just a better experience and less hassle all around. The only people that are left are the ones stupid enough to fall for gamestop's ploy of buy more trade more, so thats all they have left to cater to.

But now it makes sense, if the games of the Wii and the DS have a low attach rate that means that gasp, people will trade in more games for measly store credit then people will buy more games and trade them in and the cycle continues!

My bf and I counted; we've bought about 20 games (spanning two psps, the Wii and two 360s) since last August; if we counted the time he got his 360, and then when I got mine, that number gets really, really close to 50. Why do they want some putz who buys maybe two Wii games a year over us? Are they even considering the customers who also buy xbl time, or new controllers, or whatnot?

I know where I'm not going to be buying my ps3. * grumbles * Idiots.

NO.

what the hell is a casual game anyways? This segregation needs to stop, it's going to alienate a lot of people and I think its creating a lot of false motivation for both 'camps' also. Just make a game you want to make, play a game you want to play. As for gamestop, they will continue to stock what sells, simple as that. I don't think they're suddenly going to have mass shortages of shooters, bigger deal than this needs to be.

For the record, I'm not coming after you :)

Anywho, I'm a Gamestop employee. I really doubt that this will change much of anything, and is being blown completely out of proportion. We're still gonna carry Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, and Fire Pro Wrestling and all those obscure titles that no one noes exists. Having a bigger "focus" on the DS and Wii would be great though... since we never ever have any of those games/systems in stock. It's a sad fact, but, Carnival Games and Mario and Sonic at the Olympics out sell Mario Galaxy 9 times out 10, in my store at least. It's just good business to stock what people buy.

I seriously doubt that we'll just drop the "hardcore" gamer though. I have no evidence other than those games DO sell, but not a lot. Which is why we only get 3 (or less) copies of each. Carrying any less than would cauw3 Gamestop to lose money... and well it's freaking Gamestop and we know how much they love money.

Yeah, this doesn't really affect me. I've only bought a few games at a GS in the past two years, local game stores do three things much better:

Stocking retro (actually anything pre-last generation) games. I want NES/SNES/N64/PS2/Dreamcast games? Look someplace else.

Pricing

Giving me a good reason to come back. Between excellent customer relations and the fact that the people that work in my local game store (as opposed to my local GS/EB) actually know what the fuck they're talking about.

For these reasons and many more I may occasionally browse a GS, but very rarely give them my business.

The preorder system works really well for so called "hardcore" games however the system has gotten worse in recent years as they no longer personally call your house as I said before. But it still works because if no one wants to buy the game at least it gives gamers an option to preorder the game and get it that way. This way Gamestop isn't stocking unnecessary stock and losing money because games don't sell. Other than the fact that they won't preorder any game that costs 19.99 or less, thats BS imo.

Honestly there are very few people in my area that go looking for the Persona 3's (and most if any are the employees of the store), its mostly SOCOM's, and HALO's that the main consumer wants, you can judge by what you hear other patrons of the store talking about when they are buying games. However this is nice for me because it means that I have a full rack of RPG's to choose from!

As a now ex gamestop game advisor, I can honestly and thankfully say that I don't have a gamestop full of doushes like most places. (which is why I worked there for about 6 months for FUN (yes, you read that right)). We got word about the retooling/rearranging of the store back when the managers' convention occurred. What you don't see in these press releases is that it's really up to the district managers to determine whether/how much the store is shifted. Thank GOD, since I live in podunk BFE, and most people don't even know what a Wii is, let alone be able to say it correctly since they're missing most of their teeth, that this pretty much doesn't affect our gamestop; the regional manager already said so. What I *have* seen happening in other stores in the region, tho, is the 'Supermarket Milk' effect: Put the casual games towards the back of the store (Wii/DS) with signage at the front so it draws them through the whole store, and they have more exposure to the faced product. I, personally, don't care about that, as long as they don't nuke the gigantor selection of used PS2 games, since that's what 95% of people around this area own (we had just a VERY small customer base for 360s and PS3s, with the majority of people being stuck in last gen). To be honest, it's all a moot point until Nintendo can start keeping up with supply of the product for GameStop to keep in stock. Why center your store around something when you get maybe 1-3 units a week and they disappear faster than a high-priced callgirl at an electronics convention?

It's vaporware planning at this point. Good luck with that!
