GameStop: 360 has 2-to-1 lead over PS3 in GTA IV's first-week sales

GameStop: 360 has 2-to-1 lead over PS3 in GTA IV's first-week sales photo
     console war

GameStop has revealed their first-week sales numbers for Grand Theft Auto IV exclusively to Level Up, and they're certainly not too surprising. According to the specialty retail giant, roughly 64 percent of the copies sold were on the Xbox 360, with the other 36 percent (obviously) for the PlayStation 3.

Microsoft FTW? According to Level Up's number-crunching, an Xbox 360 victory is not quite so clear. Comparing the NPD group numbers that indicate a 9.9 million-user Xbox 360 install base versus 4.1 million PlayStation 3s (roughly 70/30), the Xbox 360 version actually "underperformed."

So ... Sony FTW? As someone who just likes to play games, do you care about these numbers and how they might have an impact on the industry? Or are you too busy playing GTA IV -- whether you're in that 64 percent or 36 percent -- to care?

It doesnt bother me either way so long as I get to play the game but Im not surprised that the 360 version sold better. The DLC was bound to shift a few extra copies.

I don't understand the whole frame rate issue. It all seems so silly, 37.789217 to 36.2201789? What does it all mean??!?

Oh, and the usage of the word titties was positively mortifying to play when I had GTAIV on rental.

I don't think it is surprising at all. There are more 360's out there than PS3s. I also don't think that the 360 is "underperforming" either. Think about it, as much as I want to love the PS3, they are still in need of a some really good games. There is less variety and so, naturally, something big like GTA4 will sell huge. However, given that the 360 has been out longer, and therefor has more games available, GTA4 might not be as big of a draw. We need to take into account multiple console owners, too. I have a 360 and Wii, and would really like to pick up a PS3 eventually. If someone owned a 360 and PS3, they may be more likely to get it for the PS3 as it's library needs a bit of a boost. Just a thought.

well, those numbers show people bought the PS3 version over the 360 one, which is a little surprising. I thought it would at least match the unit sales.

All this said, think of how many people will experience red ring of ringworm and have to wait a month to play the damn game. Just to get the ringworm again and again?

Who on earth would buy something knowing that you have a 3 in 5 chance of having it break?

Well, I agree with the fact that PS3 owners are starved for top quality games and I feel it's likely the first year of PS3 sales went to hardcore gamers mostly, especially with that original $600 price tag (ouch). With more 360's in people's hands, there is likely more gamers with a 360 that have no interest in a game like GTA IV.

Sales are impressive on both sides.

That's some lacklustre trolling, Hexfix93, please try harder. You can do it!

Anyway, what I'd be really interested in (actually, no, I wouldn't...but whatever) is sales figures for the various GTA bundles for the X360 and PS3. But those are a secret, I guess. BTW This MGS logic doesn't quite add up, actually. From all I've gathered, and I wouldn't touch an MGS title with a ten foot pole, is that MGS4 is a game that you either love or you don't. And if you fall into the former category, you're not likely to play anything else for, well, ever. So how would that boost GTA sales on the PS3? Just a stretch maybe, but this is the internets and I can predict whatever I want.

Also, I would question the statistical significance of the numbers that would lead to the claim the the 360 underperformed. From where I'm sitting, 64% is pretty close to 71%, and 36% is pretty close to 29%. I would say (without having done the necessary calculations) that the difference is actually statistically insignificant, and it really just shows that people bought the game for whichever system they own.

I want to point out that this mostly because Microsoft has done an excellent job in international retailer deals, this means that all games for the Xbox360 meet their deadlines in their respective countries.

For example, down here in Mexico, the game was available in-stores on the US release date, however PS3 copies took over a week or more to arrive.

I know 2 people, and both own both an X360 and PS3, and as you guessed, they got the X360 version instead.

Then we have the obvious reason: Xbox live.

I don't understand why you posted that link Hell 666. still showing the 360 version selling more. GTA is always been more of a US/UK based game.

But the thing is this game was branded as a "Sony game" and people saying it wouldn't do well on the 360. Well it is. Cased closed.

You can make numbers to prove anything, 75% of all people know that is 70% true, 100% of the time.

Just more fuel for the fanboys so they can whip it out and try to prove whose is bigger while the rest of us laugh at them as we actually, you know, enjoy our games.

Well I guess more people bought if for PS3 ( in percentages ) then for 360 due to the fact that the game-library for 360 is more diverse...

And off course, lots of GTA3-fans prolly bought a PS3 the moment it came out...

I was surprised to find that people were actually buying the PS3 for GTA IV, especially in lieu of the fact that all of them probably own a 360. If GTA IV did that, then what will MSG and LittleBigPlanet do? Could blow up...
