GamesMaster to return to UK TV? photo

The majority of UK gamers will look back fondly on the year 1992 as it saw the start of the cult gaming show, GamesMaster, air on television. 12 years later, the classic show is rumoured to return by Q4 2010.

GamesMaster was the very first television programme aired in the UK exclusively involving videogames. The original show was marketed in the sports category as the shows main focus was competitive gaming, but also covered reviews, hints and tips. One of the shows most recognisable characters was "The Gamesmaster", a cybernetic Sir Patrick Moore, with a rather well to-do British accent who handed out golden joysticks.

According to MCV, Future purchased the brand last year but up until now the licence for the TV show has remained with Double Act Films. Now Future are looking at potential TV networks, presenters and large amounts of interest is already being generated. The new show is said to now focus on new releases with a bigger and better production value than previously seen, and is likely to find sponsorship from large gaming retailers.

Oh GamesMaster, we are not worthy!

It'll just be Gamesmaster in name only though, won't it? I doubt they'd have Patrick Moore back. He looks pretty ill nowadays on The Sky At Night. As for Dominik Diamond, he'd probably come back since he had creative issues with Bravo while making When Games Attack.

They should bring back BITS or videoGaiden instead. Now that's how you made a videogame show.

Nice. I do indeed have fond memories of Gamesmaster. Dominik Diamond constantly calling everything 'pant-wettingly' good/bad/brilliant etc...

'mup for it returning!

This actually made me stop in my tracks (well, my internet browsing tracks anyway). If it's not actually goign to be like the original though and they're just going to use the name to generate interest, then eww, leave the memories alone! If it will be at all faithful to the original format then I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on this.

GamesMaster was by far THE best Gaming show on telly, even back in the day, and it makes all the current or other ones after its broadcast... pretty much terrible in comparison.

It may be a rumor right now but I would more than hell likely watch it, as long as it was on a Free-to-air channel.

i just prey they dont go the way of gamesville (on sky 1). the 2 presenters of that atrocity scarred me for life, and the entire show was one big advertisement.

my vote is for Ed Tudor-Pole to host, but i highly doubt ill be that lucky.

i pray for gamesmasters soul

Nice news. Gamesmaster was cool, but it would be more difficult to do a show like that now. Remember, GM was around before the internet was the hot shit, and IMO, the likes of Game Trailers provide our video fix now. I don't think this kind of content should be on tv anymore. The years have been okay without the following.

No awkward presenters
No tv censorship (age gates are crap, but have their place and work online)
No annoying kids who can't play a game to save their life.
No tv ads and dumb scheduling, that killed Gamesmaster before.

Besides, I don't feel I have the time to watch other people play games. I'm all about deep industry discussions and topics, and a half hour show doesn't cut it. Again, if not from Game Trailers, there are also plenty of free games podcasts that meet my fix. GM format will need change to keep me interested.

My advice to Future is avoid putting it on tv and just go online. Get on Live and PSN too, as that's where gamers are these days. Then, there's no chance of it being killed by stupid tv channels who need to slot you in, and charge the earth for the chance.

Hey, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one, with old episodes of Gamesmaster on VHS.

There never has been and never will be a good games related TV show in the UK. All this reboot will do is rave about FIFA, Call of Duty, and shovelware on the Wii. There, I said it.

People are missing the point, Gamesmaster as a brand has immense pull and put back in its classic 6pm slot could open the eyes of a whole new group to the depth of the industry. I can see it working on Channel 4 once again or even Five. As for presenters, loads of great comedians are gamers and would fit perfectly. Dara O'Briain or Ed Byrne immediately spring to mind. Stephen Fry as Gamesmaster?

Domonik said in the last episode (S7E10 number fans) that what set GM apart from other shows was the challenges. Hopefully someone will remember those sentiments and refrain from turning it into another magazine show. GM isn't, nor was ever about breaking news. It existed alongside the internet in its later stages and can do so today.

They do this the right way, this will become legendary. and now with online tv reshowings, half the viewing figures alone would come from the net alone.

I, for one, would be very happy that Gamesmaster will get another chance at returning. I watched the series from the very beginning, and it was excellent television. :OD

Now, if they can avoid getting any canned laughter like they shoe-horned into the last series, I may give this a chance.

I hope this comes back, nothing quite like it has ever been topped. I want the challenges, consolation zone, and features back. Not just a magazine show like what's on offer now, a proper Gamesmaster show! And the golden joysticks! Although Dominic Diamond would be the only bloke to present it!

I have zero faith this show will be any good, it won't have the budget to get a decent comedian. People seem to forget that Iain Lee is the go to guy when it comes to videogame related shows on mainstream television.

njsykora and nikmonroe raise excellent points. I for one am still hoping the TV show comes back but I have little faith without Dominik Diamond and/or Sir Patrick Moore.

Ian Lee is a douche bag and I hope he doesn't host. Maybe Charlie Brooker will do it?

Either that or rune gameswipe as a series instead of a one off.
