Games time forgot: Tachyon: The Fringe photo

Here is everything you need to know about Tachyon: The Fringe:

The main character is voiced by Bruce Campbell, and he pilots what essentially amounts to a Battlestar Galactica Viper ship.

I.E., nerd heaven.

It's also a legitimately entertaining game in its own right, but the few times I've heard this game mentioned positively on message boards, the words "Bruce Motherf*cking Campbell" are not usually far away. Fans don't focus on the branching storyline, or the hybridized flight sim/action game elements, or, you know, anything about the actual gameplay. Bruce Campbell. Battlestar Galactica. Period.

Hell, perhaps that enough. Tachyon is less of a mindblowing cult classic than it is a surprisingly entertaining artifact of a practically dead game genre. Hit the jump to find out why.

Story:

Bruce Campbell in a Colonial Viper.

Gameplay:

Bruce Campbell, in a Colonial Viper.

Why you're probably not playing it:

Tachyon: The Fringe comes from a time where PC gamers used joysticks, space sims were popular, and games used every goddamn button on the keyboard. It's a bit too complex to be a pick-up-and-play space shooter in the vein of Freelancer, but it's also too simple to be considered a full-on space sim in the way that, say, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter is. Tachyon: The Fringe is a moderately entertaining spaceship action game at best, and a Wing Commander ripoff at worst.

But it also has Bruce Campbell piloting a Colonial Viper.

Bruce acts more or less exactly as one would expect him to, but the Galactica-esque ship he pilots is the real star of the show. While Tachyon does almost nothing new in 90% of its mechanics, the ship's ability to "slide" -- that is, move in one direction while turning and firing in another as your momentum carries you forward -- actually makes the dogfights a hell of a lot more unusual and entertaining than they have any right to be.

Hell, the two Battlestar Galactica games never even bothered to implement a "slide" for their ships; Tachyon almost functions as the true licensed  Galactica title that never was. The branching story may be simplistic yet underwhelming, and the wingman mechanic is kind of cool, but it's the slide mechanic that really gives Tachyon what allure it still has. It's just plain satisfying to make a complete 180 during a chase while still moving in the same direction, suddenly transforming from hunted to hunter as your pursuer slides between your crosshairs and is subsequently blasted out of the sky. It's not really fun for more than a few hours, but it's definitely enjoyable in the short term.

Incidentally, that could also be said of Bruce Campbell.

Oh, I loved Tachyon! It wasn't as awesome as Freespace 2 but it sure as hell isn't as complicated as EVE, as great as EVE is.

Full 3d combat in space?! That was awesome! When I first played Descent Freespace, I nearly puked from the diziness that is 3d space.

All I know is that as a 6 year old I played copious amounts of X-Wing (the original) with my best friend. That's right, two of us played a one player game. He flew, I managed the shields, weapons, and engines. I was essentially R2-D2 in the X-Wing. And it was awesome. God, those were the days. Is this game anything like that?

I remember this game! I think I still have it somewhere on a shelf. The slide mechanic was the coolest part. But I think I was too young to truly grasp how to play the game. There were so many buttons on the keyboard to keep track of.

This was a great game... couldn't get very far in it though. Got a load of nostalgia from that.

It's still one of my favorite space fighter games. I think it holds up well, though its been years since I've actually been able to get it working in Windows.

I actually still own this game for my PC. I was a huge Space Combat sim fan back in the day. Those were the times!

Sounds sort of like a FPS that lets you fly. Like Descent?

I used to be a huge fan of space combat games, never got the chance to play this one though :(. I really miss the genre and i've always been convinced that if you streamlined Freespace 2 down to something slightly more complex than an Ace Combat game you could have a truly excellent console title. Mix that kind of gameplay with xbox live/psn and you'd have a pretty incredible co-op space combat game.

This game was great, played it through on both sides. You could choose to join Galspan - the 'evil' corporation or the Bora, Rebels/Terrorists. It had nice flight mechanics, a decent range of available ships and upgrades. It felt like a good mix of space-combat and flight-sim. Its got good, simplified, but without being dumbed down, gameplay with a focus on action and dog fighing.

I remember the cheats were Bruce inspired, one is to type in "BOOMSTICK" during the game :)

I know it doesn't have Bruce Campbell in it, but Beyond the Red Line (http://www.beyondtheredline.net/demo.html) has sliding and real Colonial Vipers

First of all if I am playing a game I am not interrested who is behind the voice of the caracter in the game.
So be it the voice of some actor like Bruce Campbell or James Earl Jones (Darth Vader)I don't care.
I could not care less what he does for a living or in wich movie he is featuring as long as the voice is a pleasant and good one.
And i bet both of these caraters would have a favourable voice in the game.
Concerning Battlestar Galactica,
I don't know what braindead idiot decided to release a bad remake of the movie.
But if you change the design of the ships, fighters and replace the actors.
Then you should also change the title of the movie and the names of the caracters in the movie.
Because it's not Battlestar Galactica anymore.
Appearantly those dumbasses think you can change the whole movie and use the same name of an old popular movie and everybody believes in it again.
Well think again.
Yes I am a Veteran of the Original Battlestar Galactica.
I see it as an flagrant insult to the Original BSG series that some idiot just decided to take the name but create a differant movie.
It's hilarious to see a starship which remotely resembles the real Battlestar Galactica with a bunch of actors in a space soap series.
Well gus this is not "As The World Turns" or "The Bold and the Beautifull" where actors can "shift shape" because some movie director feels like it.
I wonder how Lorne Green would feel if he found out policeman Lt Castillio from Miami Vice has taken his place.
Or Cl.Tigh turning to a old caucasian man with grey hair.
But the biggest joke would certainly be Lt Starbuck.
I would love to see Mr Benedict's face when he learned that womaniser Lt Starbuck actually turned into a young lady.
Stop screwing up this movie and create something new!!!!
