Quantcast

I have no idea what's going on in the above commercial.

If you owned an N64 in the 90's, then this meant two things: you probably didn't own any of the other third-generation consoles, and you tried to get excited about every single minor release in the hopes of justifying the massive amount of money your parents spent on it.

It is therefore somewhat unsurprising that prior Blast Corps's release, Nintendo Power (and therefore, any kid who read it) built the game up to be the second coming: a quasi-nonlinear action game about total destruction and giant robots. What more could you want?

Blast Corps is one of those games that, while it hasn't aged very well and isn't fondly remembered due to the hype that surrounded it, still remains a fun and original entry in the N64's meager library. Hell, if nothing else, it has the coolest dump truck in the history of videogames.

Story:

An automated truck full of nuclear missiles is on its way to a disposal facility when some malfunction or other causes the missiles to start leaking radioactive fluid (coloquially known as "nukejuice"*). The automated truck goes into red alert and sets a direct course for the disposal site in order to get the nukes out of a civilized area before they leak enough nukejuice to damage the ecosystem.

The problem? The truck's newly set direct course, which cannot be changed or overridden, happens to go through a bunch of formerly populated areas, full of buildings and landmarks. If the truck touches a single building, the shock will detonate the bombs and kill thousands.

Which, of course, is where you come in. The Blast Corps, a demolition team with such specific and assumedly expensive equipment that one has to wonder how they could possibly maintain their operation for more than a few weeks before filing bankruptcy, is sent in to destroy all the uninhabited buildings between the nuke truck and the disposal site.

Gameplay:

Blast Corps cleverly mixes action and puzzle gameplay in its main campaign. You'll start off a level with a predetermined piece of demolition equipment -- a dump truck, a bulldozer -- and have to clear a path for the nuke truck as it slowly creeps its way up the map to the end of the level. Each vehicle is best suited to destroying certain types of buildings and, while still keeping an eye on the nuke truck's progress, you'll have to find other demolition vehicles and decide how to best destroy the varying types of buildings standing between the nukes and the level's end.

Very tall buildings, for instance, are pretty much impervious to assault from the bulldozer but can be easily destroyed by the J-Bomb, a giant robotic jetpack which can buttstomp buildings from the air. The J-Bomb is basically what you'd get if Yoshi and Metal Gear had a baby, and the game's most enjoyable levels tend to involve the J-Bomb in some way or another.

Other vehicles include a standard bulldozer, a motorcycle that fires rockets (like you do), and a really badass/infuriating/boring/awesome dump truck named "Backlash."

I have to call out Backlash individually, because it is this particular vehicle which, by forcing me to use the Backlash and the Backlash alone,  caused me to stop playing the game. As I've said, the Backlash is basically just a bigass dump truck. Why, one might ask, would a dump truck be of any use in destroying a building? If the game were called Pick Up Junk and Move it to Another Area Corps, then perhaps it might make sense, but Blast Corps? How are you supposed to destroy a building using a...

Oh. You mean, you don't actually ram it into stuff? You have to get it at a high speed and intentionally skid, sending the truck's armored rear careening into a building with the speed and motion of a bullwhip? That's...well, it's as badass-sounding as it is difficult to pull off. The dump truck controls only moderately well, and the actual whiplash manuever isn't horrendously powerful given how long it takes to get an appropriate amount of speed. It's comparatively useless given how straightforward many of the other vehicles are, but the feeling of essentially bitchslapping a skyscraper with your dump truck's rear end is just too friggin' cool. Again, though, it was a Backlash-only mission which led me to put the game down and never pick it up again.

Why you're probably not playing it:

Blast Corps is pretty hard, so much so that I kind of have a hard time recommending it. Its myriad of vehicles and action-puzzle blending make it admirable, but, unlike something such as Space Station Silicon Valley, I just don't see any real reason to revisit it today. Maybe if I ever get the urge to robo-buttstomp a few buildings I'll eBay it, but for now it's best left a forgotten game.

Oh! I completely forgot to mention that this game was made by Rare. The real Rare, that is: the Rare of vehicle-free Banjos and Kazooies, of Perfect Dark, of Diddy Kong Racing. Blast Corps is probably their most minor achievement on the N64, but it still exhibits the imagination and fearlessness of their other games of that time period. When the chips are down, I'd take Blast Corps over Kameo anyday.

*I wish.

I did not know how to play this game at first. Oh blow things up. I love being the dark robot. I basically spend most of the time exploring and riding the train.

I love blast crops, I keep wanting every e3 to a trailers at the microsoft press conference, of this beautiful peaceful city with the best looking graphics then about a minute in a dump truck slams into the side of building causing it collapse while building around it started to get destroyed by other machines. In fact I think I was watching footage for some 360 shooter and say how well a hut look demolished and immediatly thinking "My God, we need a new blast corps"

I liked blast corps. I remember how mind blowing it was to me when you could exit one vehicle and get into another. Those were the days.

I remember how badly I wanted the game to be about something else, like giant robot fighting, so much that I would fly around in the jet-pack robot ignoring the missle-truck pretending to look for enemy robots.

I have fond memories of Blast corps, even though it wasn't that good.

Blast Corps is one of my favorite games on the N64. I forgot that it was made by Rare. Man, they made some great games back then.

I forgot how much I loved this game. I think I only rented it, which is why I don't have the "stuck" memories everyone is alluding to.

That game was the shit, I loved it and I still have it. In fact, there's a funny story about it.

I had rented it from my local place and done a fair amount in the game and returned it. When I finally got around to buying it, I wound up buying the same copy that had been the rental in the past, and it still had my save file on it. Which is cool, because there is only one save file in the game.

It probably was never erased because no one knew how to erase it.

It's awesome! It's very challenging, and I thought the Reverend liked a challenge. And it was old school hard, too, with very tough times to beat to get platinums.

YES!!! I loved this game. I played it all the and eventually got pissed at some of the harder levels and quit. My favorites were the motorcycle and the robot that destroyed buildings by doing gymnastics.

This game has some really rockin' music. Simian Acres has some of the best "let's blow some shit UP" music ever.

Also, as you went up in rank, they gave you increasingly extravagant demolition-related titles until you got all the medals, at which point they give you the rank of "You Can Stop Now". Haha!

Blast Corp was fun and original. Yeah games were pretty sparse for the N64, but that's not what made the game good. It was unique and there hasn't been anything like it since. It's a fun diversion and a fun way to blow shit up. And yes it got really fucking hard along the way - replay value.

I remember that after you get done with story missions, you get to on different planets and do some really hard time trials.

On a side note: did you know that there was glitch in which you can take down a building easily by trying to exit your vehicle.

I remember that game having a pretty kick ass soundtrack. I also recall that they had secret levels, mini-games that you could unlock, and some secret vehicles that they hid throughout the game.

One of the coolest was more or less the GENERAL LEE! Horn and everything! It had a different paintscheme, using stars and stripes instead of the classic orange of the show, but it was HANDS DOWN the General Lee!

And nothing felt better than crashing through houses and piles of rubble while blaring

"HONK HONK HONK-HONK HONKHONKHONK HONK HONK HONK HONK!*

Good times

I still have this game! I loved it when all I had was my N64, but yea, it was insane how difficult that dump truck was to use.

Also, this game ruled if you loved Tonka trucks.

I just started watching the Sopranos the other day and there was a random scene where the son was playing Blast Corps randomly and my roommate and I started reminiscing on the game. And now this article pops up.

it's the little things like this that make life awesome sometimes.

This game is one of my favorite games on the N64. I completed it back in the day with almost all gold medals. I played it constantly and loved every second of it. The destruction, the exploration, the secrets, the numerous vehicles... this game is a true Masterpiece that I still play to this day sometimes. I'll never forget it.

I love this game still. What I don't understand is, as original as it was even back then, how the hell there hasn't been a sequel yet. This is what Rare should be doing instead of their constant Viva games.

This article is sadly biased, just read the comments and you will see that Blastcorps was and is still one of the top titles for the N64. A very original concept, and it wasn't THAT hard, until you got to the part where you started obtaining the platinum medals (Very hard but not as impossible as Diddy Kong Racing's silver balloons).
The backlash was indeed infuriating but nailing those perfect slides and mastering made it all so awesome. Then visiting the whole solar system as a bonus? Sweet!
I've gone through the game 3 times already, from scratch to all platinum.
I also too still own Blastcorps on my N64, with just a few other games. Indeed, RARE, how have you fallen.

The Backlash levels for me were the only reason for the game.

I spent DAYS trying to beat the backlash level where you have to destroy buildings on both sides of some train tracks. Can Backlash drive over train tracks? HELL NO! (for some reason)

This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest games ever. I still think the only way Rare can regain their former glory is if they create a sequel to this game. Unfortunately, they've already stated they are not going to revisit old franchises, so we can kiss that idea goodbye.

If you've never played Blast Corps, you have missed out on something integral to destruction-type gaming.
