Games on Demand update: BF 2 and FC 2 photo

An additional two games are joining the ranks other ancient games on Microsoft’s console-side digital download platform, according to Xbox LIVE man Major Nelson.

The first of which is EA DICE’s Battlefield 2: Modern Combat -- the only game we know of where you can plant a C-4 charge on a helicopter and blow up your teammates while they’re attempting to parachute behind the enemy front. It’s priced at a reasonable $19.99 and weights in at a whopping 6 GB.

The other hitting Games on Demand is Far Cry 2 -- the only game we know of that forces people to check their position on a real-time paper map while driving. The zebra-slaughtering title isn’t hitting North America as a full game download so it looks like we’ve finally got the bone. At least for now.

So, what the fug are you guys going to do download?

Hrmmm, a game I can get for 4.99 for 19.99.... This games on demand thing is an awful idea... Lets charge the consumer 4X the price of the digital content, and screw him by not giving him the disc. Actually the more I think about it. I'll buy it.

Battlefield 2 is worth the $20, even though you can get the disc cheaper. It's still my favorite console Battlefield game and one of my favorite multiplayer games on Live. The community is still there too, even though Bad Company and 1943 have been out for quite some time.

I won a free copy of Far Cry 2 while at was at PAX08, which was nice. What wasn't nice is the crazy eagle eye AI and the dreadful map system. The article is correct about driving while viewing the map at the same time. This isn't easy to do so I'm shocked that it was included and not improved upon or fixed during development.

Also Far Cry 2 has nothing to do with Far Cry 1, but that isn't a bad thing. Ultimately, the game had some great ideas but I don't suggest you pick it up without renting or borrowing it first -- or play a demo, if one exists.

I dig Far Cry 2. Played thru it 3 times (well the first time the save game data corrupted when was 80% thru it heh) I like the map thing, and i had no trouble driving full speed with the map up to find my locations :) It definately isnt a game for everyone. The map editor was insane and sometimes more fun than the game for me. I definatey reccomend renting it first and if you enjoy it the game can keep you occupied for many hors finding all the stuff there is to find. A lot of people i know didnt like the sandbox open world and couldnt think outside the straight forward missions. I discovered a million and one amusing ways to do missions, and even got very good at stealth (it is possible even though most people say it isnt)

Sounds like we had similar experiences. The game certainly had its issues (even ignoring all the bugs), but it was very enjoyable and unique. Like you, I also became a pro at driving with my map open (all the while watching for diamonds and tapes in the area), and enjoyed the incredibly open-ended mission design. I never played it through all the way (save game issues about halfway through caused me to stop), but I still own it and definitely plan on going back to it someday.

Well, nice to know FC2 is there. Will give me an excuse to try it.

Modern Combat is absolutely not worth $20. $10, tops, for that last-gen, lack-luster remake.

Far Cry 2, however, is a good game at $20.

As monotonous as FarCry 2 got towards the end, I still enjoyed that game more than the majority of FPS games I've ever played. It was both ambitious and difficult and while it didn't polish every aspect of its design to perfection, I give it major kudos for breaking out and at least trying something fresh in the genre.
