Games of the Week: Gracial Fortless edition photo

It's that time of the week where we discuss the videogames we've been playing here on Destructoid and frankly, if you are yet to experience the Engrish greatness that is Omega 5's "narrator," then we really, really pity you. The game itself is pretty damn fun, but Gracial Fortlesses put it over the edge. Give that voiceover a medal.

So, another week, more games. You know the drill by now, hit that jump and see what the Dtoid crew have been up to.

TheGoldenDonut: After reading Chad's latest Memory Card I felt the strong urge to hook up my SNES and replay Chrono Trigger.  I've beaten the game at least twenty-five times over the years and it still hasn't gotten old.

Brad Rice: I've finished Portal, and when I'm out and about, I'm still chugging through Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, but I'm dedicating my time to a special little game that'll pop up on Dtoid very soon (maybe tomorrow!)

Faith: I've been playing My Sims and I've almost got a 5 star town. I played Cooking Mama 2 on DS and Puzzle Quest on XBLA when I could spare a few moments.

Also I finally caved and bought a Wii points card. Now I'm addicted. I bought Paper Mario which I've never played before. The game holds up pretty well for a Nintendo 64 game.

I also bought the original Super Mario Bros. which looks amazing on a high def. big screen TV. *snicker* My boyfriend and I played it all Friday night and only made it as far as World 5-3. We only warped after we made it to a world and died though. We were honest about it.

Next I plan to download Startropics. See my games time forgot post and you'll see why. Then I want all the Zelda games, Pokemon Snap and Bonk. Yes, I must have Bonk.

Jonathan Holmes: Been playing a lot of VC console games this week. Punch Out, Bubble Bobble, Air Zonk, and Super Castelvania IV have each gotten about a half an hour of my time. I think I'm drawn to the VC because being in 2008 has made me feel exceptionally old and nostalgic. I still can't believe that I am alive and still playing video games three years after the climatic battle inside Unicron's taint area between Rodimus Prime and Galvitron. The future truly is now.

I also spent some time reminiscing with Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2. Those games are so much more awesomely brutal than I remembered, more so than any WWII game I've ever played.  Finally, I'm still finishing up Phoenix Wright 3. There needs to be an anime of this game, just so more people can experience it. I think it's the best read I've had all year, and that's counting games, books, and comics.

Yeah, I know we're only two weeks into the year. That doesn't mean PW3 wont blow your mind.

BlindsideDork: I have been plowing through The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and I am at the end. But I have got a bunch of wires in my place up for some stellar TF2 action. Now I just have to start on the other 10 games I have piling up. Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings here I come!

Aaron Linde: HAIKU TIME

Omega Five

Aegis Wing be damned
An original shmup and
Easy on the eyes

Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom

What a pile of sh*t
Even at the price of "free"
I feel ripped off

Chad Concelmo: Besides enjoying Aaron's amazing haikus, it's been nothing but Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn this week.

Jim Sterling: As if you couldn't tell, Omega 5 has taken up a lot of my time. I also feel that I'm about done with Halo 3 now, and when February's mini-festival of gaming hopefuls arise, it will likely take a trip with me to Blockbuster for some part exchanging. Other than that, it's been more practice with Guitar Hero III, some of the usual CoD4 and even a smattering of Warriors Orochi.

Hamza Aziz: I beat COD 4 the other night. The game left a great impression on me which I'll be writing up about later. The only bad thing it left behind was how horribly short the title was. Now I just need to hop onto multiplayer. Too bad I just downloading the Heroic Map Pack for Halo 3 which will be taking up my multiplayer time now. That is, of course, IF MICROSOFT WOULD F**KING FIX XBOX LIVE ALREADY!!! WHY IN THE HELL CAN'T A BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION FIX ONE OF THEIR BIGGEST SELLING POINTS BY NOW! IT'S BEEN ALMOST A MONTH!

Also playing I Wanna Be The Guy. Well, more like cursing out my computer and the designer of the game because of how frustrating it is. And a flash game similar to I Wanna Be The Guy that Ogu.RPG turned me onto which also makes me hate Ogu.RPG for it.

Dyson: I finally secured the title of The Last Person on Earth to Play Portal. Are you proud? I know I'm happy about the whole ordeal, although I'm sad that I've missed my window on the whole Cake is a Lie popularity.

Colette Bennett: I have played nothing for days but Move Your House and Fight The Crowds at Ikea. Actually, that's a lie - the day before I moved I quite enjoyed Omega 5. I LOVE THE GRACIAL FORTRESS!!!!

Nick Chester: I've been spending more time with my PSP, catching up with some older games, the first of which is Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. High Impact did an awesome job of bringing the series to life on the handheld; Size Matters contains as much polish and variety as Insomniac's console titles. I'm really looking forward to Secret Agent Clank, for shizzle. More Giant Clank, please.

Also: Super Mario Galaxy , Rock Band, and a freeware indie PC title, Synaesthete.

Tristero: Amidst some personal drama I found relief in the sweet embrace of Doki Doki Majo Shinpan. Nothing warms the soul like hiding in an equipment shed overnight in order to ambush a cheerleader and touch her in strange places until she admits she's a witch. God, I love videogames. Picross and Phantom Hourglass have been snatching up a lot of my time also. It's been a DS week all around.

Gameboi: I've been quenching that insatiable zombie fix with Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

Grim: Omega Five is so much fun, even if I can't beat the boss in stage 3. I also had a prepubescent kid scream profanities at me in Call of Duty 4 because I was doing better than him, even though we were on the same team. The Internet confuses me.

Tell us, fair gamers, what you have been playing this week.

This week I've been playing Call of Duty 4 and I Wanna Be The Guy. Made it to Act 4 in CoD4 today. I'll be getting Omega 5 soon too. Probably after exams.

Same as usual...WNW, which was tons of fun, and a bit of CoD 4 when I could squeeze it in over the course of the week (that is, when Infinity Ward’s servers weren’t doing strange things). Also, I’m now up to the most difficult tier of songs on Rock Band (solo career, guitar, Expert):

Deep Purple - “Highway Star”
Molly Hatchet - “Flirtin’ With Disaster”
Iron Maiden - “Run to the Hills”
The Outlaws - “Green Grass and High Tides”
Aerosmith - “Train Kept A-Rollin’”

I’m positive that I beat the Iron Maiden song, and that I only got 80% through “Green Grass and High Tides” and “Highway Star” before failing. I’m also pretty sure that I beat the Aerosmith song, but I can’t remember if I beat “Flirtin’ With Disaster”.

Also, Dyson, you’re not the Last Person on Earth to Play Portal; I’m still waiting for The Orange Box to move up in my Goozex queue.

I would have been playing CoD4 this week, but my connection at home is spotty at best cause it keeps kicking me. Other than that, I'm mostly cleaning up achievements in EDF2017, Overlord, and of course Omega 5 because I haven't done the perfect runs.

Just beat the second level in Omega 5, having a ton of fun with it, it's beautiful and not too brutal for a shmup.

Still playing Assassin's Creed, I can only take it in bursts, should finish it this week.

Always playing fucking Bomberman Live. Sometimes I wonder if the real reason I bought a 360 was for this buttery gaming goodness.

Meh, I started Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. It's not too bad, considering I wasn't too crazy about the previous one, which was my first entry to the series.

I might try finishing Disgaea 2 this week. But my main focus is waiting for 2 games: No More Heroes next week, and my friend importing Brawl from Japan so we can play it on his modded Wii.

You know, I had been hearing a lot of "buzz" about Omega Five, with it being touted as an "original" shmup. I thought I'd give it a try... but it left me feeling like I had played it before. Then I remembered... I HAD. Forgotten Worlds for the Genesis. Now there's a title deserving of the "Games Time Forgot" feature. Omega five plays just like Forgotten Worlds. In Forgotten Worlds you have a levitating character, they can shoot in any direction, you collect money from the things you kill, can upgrade weapons at shops mid-game, kill an inordinate number of things on-screen, have big boss fights... Omega Five has, well, I guess I didn't play much past the demo, I instead got the urge to pull out my old CDX and load up some 16-bit goodness.

I hardly had any time to play this week, was on nightshift up until saturday 6am, then slept for 4 hours, crashed my car a few times in Forza 2 before realising I really hadn't slept enough for driving a car in that game... then GF came home and we had to leave to my place ( about 140 km further ) for a family party... great start of my 2 weeks of I thought... no gaming to speak off in the first day... then in the middle of the family gathering I see the number of my work appearing on my phone ( it was about 21h then), my colleague and one of my best friends from way back in college had gotten ill on the job ( vomitting like crazy ) and the only one that was available was me ( doh! ) as a result I spent the rest of the night at work ( until 6am ) then went to bed for about 6 hours and left for work again to do another 12hours shfit, now I just got home from that nightshift...

great first 2 days of holiday I think :-p

a well, lets hope karma comes on time and lets me have 2 sweet weeks of holiday :-)

Wai too much Call of Duty 4. I'm thinking of writing a Cblog about my combined experiences both with and without [TOID] ers. Or perhaps an intro post for those that are jumping in. That manual is worthless for multiplayer.

If I do the latter, I'll wait until I actually get my head around this Prestige mode thing.

Also, Bioshock a bit and the Halos when there is a LAN game up at my school. That's about it (which is sad, my NES misses me and I lost my R4).

In the top 5 Dtoid leaderboard for Omega Five after having it for 24 hours.

@droobies, go suck a cock.

@jimmles, 200K? At least try man.. :D (The trick is getting the first fire powerup which will lvl your weapon to lvl2, then immediately picking the water powerup which will of course be lvl2 and later there are more blue powerups to get to lvl3.)

Addition: You just have to survive/avoid/whatever the first showing of that fucking robot on the first level and then you get the next blue powerup to get your weapon to lvl 3. Once you do that the rest of the lvl is gravy and you should have no problem completing the first lvl without dying once.

been trying to catch up with Persona 3 (god i can never seem to finish any PS2 RPGs I start since I got my 360 x.x) but also playing some Omega 5.

Oh and also playing an assload of Kingdom Under Fire. Yes the reviews for it have been lame. YES a good chunk of Xbox owners hate it. But I, along with a ample population of owners, actually like this game. It's just the thing to tide me over until DMC4 and Lost Odyssey =).

Is it possible to destroy the big turtle mech thing beyond bowing off its head armor in the GRACIAL FORTRESS?

Or, has anyone successfully destroyed the big worm thing in THE ESCARATED INVASION?

Its not necessary, but it seems they can be destroyed.

Lots of O5 as seem to be the norm. I unlocked both extra characters. Does anyone else feel like using Sensei is cheating? I one-credited it on my first try.

Also there was Ghost Squad, Metal Slug 3, Geometry Wars, Crackdown and I finished CoD 4 single player.
