Games of the week for 12/30/07: Screw Call of Duty 4 on Veteran edition photo

Seriously, who was the crackhead who decided that Veteran mode was even remotely fun to play? It's not even worth completing the levels for 40 gamerpoints a pop. In fact, I'd rather cut out my own eyes and shove them up my arse, that is what I'd rather do. You see what I did there? I stated that I'd rather do something very painful and very unpleasant and OH FOR GOD'S SAKE MICROSOFT GIVE US XBOX LIVE BACK SO I DON'T HAVE TO KEEP PLAYING IT!

Calm breaths ...

So I don't know about you guys, but I still can't get into an online match to save my mother's life (which might be a good thing, as I don't care if that old whore dies) and it's starting to drive me a little bit crazy with boredom. I really don't want to go back to my old hobby, since they jail me if I net one more restraining order.

Games! We played games this week, some of us. What ones did you play? Hit the jump to find out the ones we played. That's how our little system works.

Nick Chester: Warhawk, Call of Duty 4 (360), Rock Band, and Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters on the PSP. Sorry, nothing exciting this week.

Topher Cantler: I started playing Rival Schools II earlier in the week, but then I decided to pick up this really old game I used to play called "Draw Something for Yourself: Not Someone Else Edition." It's really f*cking good. It was all covered in dust when I found it, but it still works.

BlindsideDork: I am trying to trade off between The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Zach & Wiki, and Team Fortress 2. I got Condemned, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings and Super Mario Galaxy waiting for me, I need more time!

TheGoldenDonut: I've been alternating between Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, both of which I got for Christmas.

Dick McVengeance: Picked up Mr. Gay finally, and so I'm hoping this'll complete my holiday cheer. Otherwise, it's time to start digging through my retro pile, and play through some N64 titles like Goemon and Zelda 64.

Jim Sterling: I wasn't playing Halo 3, that's for damn sure, since everybody who sells it at a reasonable price has now sold out. I was playing Call of Duty 4 online before Xbox Live wigged out, and very little else. Why does 2007 have to end on such a dull note?

Jonathan Holmes: Played through Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the PSP. It's so much better than I remembered it, and I remembered it being pretty awesome. I also finally got to Guitar Hero III. To be honest, I'm a little underwhelmed by the title. I think I'm ready for the whole "karaoke with instruments" game fad to end. And I picked up Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games on sale at Target. It's surprisingly fun in short bursts.

But mostly I've been playing Extra Mario Bros. That's my Game of the Year, even though it's not a retail game, and it was made a year ago.

[Shameless Plug]Check my blog for more info on the game![/Shameless Plug]

Gameboi: It's been another one of those very busy weeks, but I did manage to sqeeze in a few minutes of Zack and Wiki before I went to be last night.

Joe Burling: I snatched up some of the new Rock Band DLC which was a big hit with so many friends in from out of town. I checked out the Burnout Paradise demo and the game quickly jumped to the top of my must-have list. Other than that, I've been playing COD4 multiplayer. Once the holidays are over I'll have more of a chance to play.

Grim: I picked up Gun, Condemned: Criminal Origins, and Eternal Sonata for relatively cheap this week and have been playing all 3 pretty much nonstop.

Chad Concelmo: After being addicted to the vastly underrated Battalion Wars II I decided to ring in the New Year 2001 style by playing through (for the umpteenth time) Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64.

Faith: Wait ... I actually get to play games, not just sell them. I knew they were used for something else.

We've been playing Cooking Mama 2 on my Nintendo DS during the few moments I'm not working, running errands, spending time with family or falling asleep on the couch.

I've also managed a couple of hours with Puzzle Quest on XBLA and some time with My Sims on the Nintendo Wii.

Aaron Linde: I'm too light on time to play, too broke to buy. Funny how that works out, isn't it?

In those few minutes I steal away from work, I've been drilling through the extra dungeon in Final Fantasy VI Advance , which has been quite a trip. Ungodly difficult, particularly with the later bosses -- to think, FFVI is difficult again. Up is down, black is white, dogs and cats living together, et cetera. The only real drag is that there's a decidedly limited (which is to say: none at all) amount of original scenario in the new dungeons, unlike Final Fantasy IV Advance, where each character had a trial that included unique text and scenario. At least they're adding like a hojillion new events in IV DS, yeah?

Oh, and in my heart, I'm secretly lusting after a second playthrough of Dragon Quest VII, though that's a time-sucking vortex I don't dare touch until my current stock of work is through.

I started Mass Effect (sorry, Jim) and am loving the conversations. The battle elements seem secondary to the amazing job they did in creating the world.

Beyond that, some more Galaxy and Bleach DS. I started Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin alongside Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles on my PSP. All that Dracula-love made me start playing Castlevania 1 on VC again.

Necros: Yeah, they seemed secondary to me too. Like they tacked on the piece of shit at the last minute after they realized they needed a game to go alone with their lovely story.

Mass Effect, which I was initially afraid of due to Mr. Sterling's monocle-driven rants, but I'm finding I really enjoy it.

Except for that Mako bullshit. Whose idea was it to make a major portion of the game not fun at all?

I'm playing it on Veteran right now and I haven't completed any it any other difficulty either nor am I that great when it comes to FPS games. It's so damn hard that it takes me to beat one specific scenes an hour a pop from dying the moment I restart from the last checkpoint. If it wasn't for the checkpoints the shit would be unbeatable. Although I'm close to beating it now and don't give two shits about achievement points I'm just very balsy and just said fuck it.

Checkpoints are your savior.

This week has been alternating between Super Mario Galaxy (now with Luigi. I must have my 121 stars!) and Zack and Wiki, with a little bit of Elite Beat Agents thrown in for good measure.

Jim, bless you for exploiting your parental issues for the sake of our lulz. Also, when your gaming life has got you down, please remember us poor, unfortunate souls without Xbox Live or a 360.

Yeah, okay, I'll sod off.

More practicing GH3 on hard, I three-starred Hit Me With Your Best Shot, yay! I broke down and used a code to unlock all the songs. I find myself playing Reptilia and I'm In The Band the most now. After perusing the internet I discovered how easy it is to *ahem* acquire and play dreamcast games so I pulled my DC out of the closet only to find the vga a/v adapter doesn't seem to be working so I ordered a new one through Amazon which should arrive later this week along with King of Fighters XI and Neo Geo Battle Colliseum.

You didn't like ME? Damn.

Giving praise to team asshole at TF2 and a dislike of ME, you're trying damn hard for that worst writer award aren't you.

And I was playing on Live(HAHA), played some Gears, got 18 kills, still hate it beyond anything, now I'm playing FFT War of the Lions.

Perhaps my leaving shitty Gears was for the best, now my friends can go play the other shitpile known as CoD4, its like trading one turd for an even bigger one honestly, but hey, its like most people have taste anyway.

Call of Duty on Veteren hard? Wuss.....

Then again... I suck at Halo yet rock socks at CoD4... on a completely different note my father was in 1st Force Recon and "introduced" me and my bro about their pseudo-culture and tactics, how the fuck that translated into CoD4 pwnage is beyond me.

.... my friends have me play single player on their accounts while they watch and eat popcorn, they say it's like watching a movie. It's a win-win.

Pro-tip: one in the head, two in the chest. USMCFFR FTW!

I started on Veteran and it felt impossible. So I restarted on Hardened and beat the game. Now I'm going through on Veteran and getting through with relatively few problems. It definitely has its moments though...you just have to be really fucking careful, and sometimes really fucking lucky (though the few parts where you need to get lucky are usually short and near a checkpoint).

Guitar Hero III, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Puzzle Quest. I was also unfortunate enough to play a bit of Boogie and Petz 2. They suck just as hard as you'd expect, but if you're a 10 year old girl you'll probably love them.

I hear ya about COD4 pn veteran. Those damn monster closets on that last objective of the sniper mission just randomly throws me a ton of baddies. When I thought I killed them all, theres always one last guy that comes out of nowhere to shoot me while I carry the other guy to the chopper.

Fuck Veteran mode. I tried doing the damn airplane mission and I wasn't even close to beating it by the 23rd try.

But, yeah. I finally got time to sit down and play more Final Fantasy: War of the Lions. Even though I haven't beat it, it's one of my top games of '07. Also been playin' *brings up gamercard* Halo 3 on FNF and some Forza.

Oh! I also picked up Metroid but only finished the first level.

I just finished Prey today finally. Scratch that one off my must-do list.

Bleh. What a dour and depressing ending.

For a downer encore, I'm working toward completing HL2 in the Orange Box, more Rock Banding, some GH3, lotsa DS and PSP. I am trying like hell to make sure that I'm more successful than any of you at beating Dracula X. I'm determined that all those fancy polygons have weakened you young kids resolve and none of you know what a real challenge is.

I also have Ass Creed coming this week, so I can finally see what all the medieval fuss is all verily about ye thou beingest.

CAN WE GET XBOX LIVE WORKING AGAIN SO WE DON'T HAVE TO CONTINUE TO BITCH ABOUT WEEK LONG OUTAGES?

Seriously, I could build a computer from start to finish in an hour. If they need to put more servers online they need to have cloned drives ready to go and pop those fuckers in place to get service returned to normal levels.

I finally picked up Mass Effect with some of the gift card money I got for Christmas and while I'm enjoying it quite a bit I can certainly see why people (read: Jim) are complaining about the combat. The world is amazing, the characters are great, the story is inspiring but the combat does seem extremely secondary.

A friend actually got his hands on a Rock Band bundle (It was just released here in Canadia) so we have been combining it with my fully stocked bar to result in the surliest holiday season yet. Maybe my pre-order will be filled before March...

Variable Gear, Sands of Time proves that video games can handle story wonderfully. That became a standard I have held all others against since. Enjoy every minute of it, it doesn't last long, and the sequels were pretty much useless as narratives and platformers.

You’d think that being home from college would lead to me playing more games than I did at school, but you’d be dead wrong. I have my PS3 hooked up to the main TV in the house, an eight-and-a-half-year-old 27" CRT (blasphemy, I know), and whenever my parents are home (read: pretty much always), they’re watching something on the TV — and I can’t very well kick them off to shoot some pirates in Uncharted. However, I did host a 24-player server for WNW, which was a lot of fun, and a bunch of friends and I combined forces to solve some puzzles in Zack & Wiki at a friend’s house. Good times.
