This is a very special edition of Games of the week, as this episode, for one week only, it will be rushed! That's right, you'll be getting all the thrill of your regular games of the week section, but even more slapdash and last-minute than usual. This is what happens when your humble editor has been too busy stuffing his fat face with cake instead of doing his damn job. Like it matters anyway, nobody reads this bit.
Speaking of reading, we played games this week. As always, hit the jump for the bit that people actually pays attention to.
Razak: I have been playing The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road. Yes, you read that right. It showed up on my doorstep so I'm playing it. It's actually not terrible and as far as game design goes unliike anything I've played before. However, I'm not that into obscure Japanese/Gothic Lolita/Steampunk/children's literature RPGs so it's possibly its just a bunch of cliche gaming approaches that I've never encountered before because of my lack of experience with the genre.
Also A Boy and his Blob, and let me just say AAAAAWWWWW.
Zimmerman: I've been playing a ton of Demon's Souls again this week. I'm just about ready to try and finish my first run-through but -- despite having invested an unreasonable number of hours into the game -- I'm giving serious consideration to starting from scratch with the knowledge that I've acquired but using a completely different character build to keep me on my toes. I'm torn.
Holmes: Playing Wii Fit Plus, Domino Rally, and Ju-On: The Grudge for review. Reviews for all three games could be up by the time you read this. Also bought Obscure 2 for the Wii ($14), Samurai Showdown Anthology for the Wii ($20) and Major Minor's Majestic March ($12) all new. They were all worth the price, but in the case of Obscure and MMMM, just barely.
Also played an unhealthy amount of Critter Crunch. I love this game. I really love it.
Also tried to get back into Contact, a DS game that I initially enjoyed, then abandoned years ago. I'm totally stuck and have no idea what I'm supposed to do, but it's still pretty fun.
Sterling:Demon's Souls is my reason for existing. I'm still not a very high level, but that's mainly because I've been taking it really slowly. I can absorb hours into that game and still not feel like I've done very much. Even then, I still feel incredibly satisfied with the time I've wasted. It truly is an amazing title, and I think it'll be a tough contest between that and Dragon Age for my RPG of the year.
Other than that, more Rock Band Unplugged and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. So yeah.
Holmes: Oh crap, I forgot to mention A Boy and his Blob and Half-minute Hero. Both great games that I want to dedicate some serious time to once I clear the rest of my schedule.
Concelmo: After playing through the original Uncharted again in preparation for its sequel, I picked up Uncharted 2: Among Thieves this week and have been playing it pretty much nonstop. It is amazing. Seriously, I love it so much.
I also played more Shatter and decided it might be my favorite game of the year. I also think I will play this game every week until the day I die (you have no idea how obsessed I am), so you may see me mention this game in every single one of these posts.
Grim:Dead Space! I'm replaying it for the 3rd or 4th time to get the last two Achievements: only using the default weapon and completing the game on the hardest difficulty. Beyond that, I was trying to finish the third island in PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, but getting those final rainbows is driving me insane. There's always one guy that gets through my defense. Always.
Cantler:Street Fightans IV, Super Puzzle Fightans, Professor Layton and the Diabolical box, and some E4. The more I play SFIV, the more I appreciate it. It wasn't initially very high on my list of favorite Street Fighters, but I think that's changed over the past few weeks. Brad Nicholson and I have been pounding the shit out of each other every now and then and it's been great fun.
Bennett: Mostly just a lot of PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, but yesterday for our Extra Life charity I also played Rock Band 2, Plants Vs Zombies, Resident Evil 4, I Maed a Game With Zombies in it and all kinds of other good stuff.
Burch:Uncharted 2 is equally as good as Uncharted is not-good.
Which is to say, very.
Ross: Mostly just been playing Borderlands, and a touch of Demon's Souls.
That's good to hear Anthony. I assumed since I didn't like the first Uncharted I wouldn't like this one either. I'm gonna borrow it from someone when they finish, I think.
It's fucking amazing!!!! Oh my goodness, the game's atmosphere and music tie the gritty non-organic stylings really well. And for something that doesn't have dialogue, you can't help but smile when you see the interactions and solve the puzzles.
Started playing Legend of Zelda and Uncharted 2. Still slogging through Batman: Arkham Asylum, Super Puzzle Fighter, Persona 3 and helping my dad through Metroid Fusion. It's been a busy week.
Hey Jim, like the intro video. Would love to see you at the next live all-night rockathon gaming event (if there is one) and get your impression of the "Welcome to Earf" saga that many subsequently eulogized in song and decidedly interpretive dance-like movement, as well as fan art.
Dead Space, I have to go back and finish that game one of these days...
I've only been playing Trackmania Nations but have gotten Battlefield Heroes and Quake Live updated for some action this week. The mention of Shatter makes me miss my PS3 even more T_T. I need to get back into the Top 50 once again haha.
Oh and I need reviews of Borderland ASAP!! Canadian retailers are selling it at $40 for a limited time which is making me think about holding off of Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls until my exam break.
i am playing demon souls and i died in soul form ... so am i fucked til the next boss i beat or what? my complete body doesn't seem to be anywhere to be recovered...
Just finished my replay of Half Life 2, still playing the shit out of the Forza 3 demo. Unsure if my finances will allow me to get another game soon or not though :(
UNCHARTED 2.
And some Sakura Taisen 2 to try to see what Unangbangkay is so hyped about. It's pretty damn good, but my Japanese needs to be better, I can hardly follow the game!
Also, arcade BlazBlue, SFIV, KoF XII, and TvC.
I'm at the final boss. I have to say this game is simultaneously disappointing me and blowing my mind.
My problem with it is the game really is an RTS. No doubt about it. It's a damn good RTS I think but the problem is I didn't fucking sign up for an RTS! I suck at strategy and there's way more strategy in here than was hyped. It makes the game, for me, very frustrating. However it's so hood at what it does I can't help but feel some level of satisfaction when I do get a grip on my least favorite genre. Especially fighting this last boss. I'm almost tempted to cheat, watch the ending on YouTube, and write up my review. But that'd be naughty.
I'm also planning on bringing The Beatles back out for some hot Abbey Road action.
OH! And I also subscribed to Gamefly this weekend. I'm supposed to be getting Arkham Asylum and WET this week.
Finished up Uncharted 2 last week have been dabbling in the multiplayer here and there. Its one of my favorite games this year.
That was great and all, but Machinarium has been an absolute surprise to me. It was a good price, good length, has AMAZING artwork, and some taxing puzzles.
Machinarium is an absolute MUST for an adventure fan.
@Jim
I gotta agree on Demon's Souls. I can't really express how much I love this game, and you get the feeling that everyone playing knows exactly that same feeling. I'm a huge Baldur's Gate fan too though, and I've been waiting for Dragon Age for awhile it seems, but Demon's Souls just kinda blindsided me with how awesome it is.
It's gonna be hard. Dragon Age will surely give us what we want in that kind of game, but Demon's Souls is just one of a kind. Reallllllly tough, but I'm mostly hoping I even let Demon's Souls go long enough to play Dragon Age!! I haven't even opened Uncharted 2 and that's saying a lot!
Playing You don't know jack 3 - thank god for simpler times when you didn't need an activation code to play a disc you have in the drive. bought this like 10 years ago, misplaced it, never got to play it.
Also World of Goo - thanks to Destructoid news on the 'name your own price' deal.
Every time i try to play more than 2 levels of 'Eden' i give up in disgust.
Hopefully Borderlands will get here in the mail before I go to Mayo clinic on 27th.
Hey Anthony, when are you going to learn how to play games? You hated Uncharted because it was too hard for you, you hated inFamous because it was too hard for you, and you thought Arkedo Jump was hard (it's not). In fact, none of these games are remotely difficult even on the hardest difficulty setting. Grow a pair and learn how to play games, son.
After waiting and waiting for Play-Asia to get off their asses and mail me my copy of Bowsers Inside Story, it finally arrived on my doorstep last week and I can safely say the wait was worth it. What a fantastic game- everything about it is just so much damn fun. I only wish I had more time to play it.
All this talk about Demons Souls makes me wish (for the very first time) that I had a PS3. But with the amount of money and free time I have (shit all, in both areas) I really can't justify the purchase. Oh well.
Got a few hours into Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, then immediately set it aside for Brutal Legend, which I have been really enjoying. It's a lot more polished than I was expecting.
I've mostly been playing the spoils of the Toys R Us Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale...Uncharted 2, NBA 2k10 and NHL 10. Also played some Superstar Saga on m DS (I want to play the Mario and Luigi series in order) and, of course, Demon's Souls.
Gunstar Super Heroes. And some other junk. Jeez, HARD difficulty is actually HARD! Anyway, yeah, it had been lost under my bed for a while and I just found it again. Good stuff.
As part of the Half-Life sale on Steam, I downloaded the Half-Life 1 Anthology. I know the original Half-Life games pale in comparison to the Half-Life 2 saga, but I had been wanting to play Blue Shift and Opposing Force for a while now. Also going to try to catch up in the Golden Sun games.
@A New Challenger: Excellent choice, but expect to spend some time on Moon2, the end of the chopper section is a pain. It's soo worth it when you finish it though.
BRUTAL LEGEND! Which has been incredibly awesome so far. Only frustration I had was when I was using the Deuce in the first battle and kept accidentally driving out of the play area. Melting faces never felt so good.
I also played through Machinarium which was awesome. And then Borderlands comes out end of the week! So many games right now.
I've been playing ODST, beating Dutch's flashback for the THIRD FUCKING TIME because I keep forgetting that you have to manually save. :\
Also still playing Diabolical Box. Right now only have I believe 4 bonus puzzles to beat and then I've beaten them all. All but... 4 of which done without cheating too! :D
I've played some Brutal Legend and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
I also completed Uncharted 2, wich I must say is probably going to rank among my favourite games of all time. Seriously, I wasnt bored for a single second throughout the game! This is amazing, considering that Uncharted 1 wasnt really much other than an 'alright' game to me.
I've been playing Medal of Honor: Airborne for PC. I have the game for 360, but I thought I'd get it for PC when it was released on Steam for 9.99 a couple of weeks back. The PC version (as with most FPS games) is definitely better in terms of the graphics and feels a bit more intense.
I don't know why in the hell they used checkpoints instead of a normal save system for the game (they also use the annoying unskippable cut-scenes typical to the genre), but I can overlook the flaws for the sake of a good time.
I would love to see a Medal of Honor game based in Gaudalcanal or Okinawa and playable from both Japanese and American perspectives.
Yeah, I could never get through Moon 2 before I lost the game. The helicopter section really is crazy, but I can now get through it... just not with much health O_o .
Final Fantasy X for the first time. About 20 some hours in. I'm surprised how "on rails" this one is so far, and the complete lack of an overworld.
BUT it probably has the best battle/skill system so far. Up there with V's skill system and VI's battle system, with how all the party members had specific attributes, but could be fairly customized through magicite and relics.
Tales of Vesperia and a ton of Castle Crashers. Love that game.
Also went crazy retro and listened to the FFIV episode of Retroforce Go, which convinced me into buying FFIV DS. It's been fun so far but I've only played an hour or so.
Not much this week for me. Caught up on some Rock Band 2 downloads and had a generally good time with that, and also sat down and did my first marathon gaming session in a long time with Brutal Legend. Picked up a rental copy, went straight home, and played all the way through it in one sit-down. Without doing any side missions I had wound up finishing the game in five hours, 15 minutes. I definitely have some mixed feelings about the game, but it was certainly fun while it lasted, and because of that game I now call my car The Deuce.
@ Birdman- Really? Any particular gripes? Also, if I do get jumpy and decide to go straight to Bowser's Inside Story, will it ruin anything? I thought I read in one review that there were some jokes that alluded to stuff that happened in the earlier games...
uncharted 2 has to be my favorite single player experience i've played this year. just beat it, tomorrow its the online affairs. and i've been playing hl2 and romance of the three kingdoms 8. i'm gonna be very busy this week.
Half-Minute Hero is a lot more exciting than I thought it would be. Which is to say that I first thought it would be very intense. Hero 30 is like Ys I and III put together. Who woulda thought that could have worked out?
@ akathatoneguy
Well, I may not be the guy to ask, as I never finished Partners In Time, and nor have I finished Bowsers Inside Story yet, but I haven't noticed anything that alludes to PiT.
I dunno, I just found that game really disappointing after I had such a fantastic time with SSS. You should give it a try though, I had a mate who thought it was much better than SSS, but eh. I didn't think much of it. I was never a fan of Baby Mario/Luigi and goddammit Baby Peach is just plain annoying. I'd say you should not-download Partners in Time before you buy it, just in case it's not your thing.
Beat Uncharted 2 and Donkey Kong Country. Uncharted 2 is probably GOTY for me, DKC was more aggravating than anything, but still fair. Played some Half-Minute Hero (pretty addictive) and Bump N Jump on the 2600.
@Anthony & Ross
"Uncharted 2 is equally as good as Uncharted is not-good. Which is to say, very."
Whoa there cowboy, Uncharted was probably the best little surprise I've ever played in a game. Bah. To each their own I guess, I say that too much these days.
I just seriously hope you two weren't on the Bioshock praising-wagon around the time Uncharted came out. I bought those 2 games at the same time and my expectations and satisfaction levels were completely polar opposites.
Gonna pick up Half-Minute Hero seeing as it's made by From Software, who has officially made me their bitch after playing Demon's Souls.
I beat Uncharted 2, finishing up Brutal Legend, finally beat Bionic Commando Rearmed, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and of course, Demon's Souls which has become my GOTY.
I got less then 3 weeks till I can walk again. Also my computer died so I'm making this comment on my DSi.
Punching stuff as Bowser in Mario & Luigi, barfan rainbows in Critter Crunch and rolling crap in Katamari Forever. Meaning, crushing mode in Uncharted 2 is making me rage like none other.
