Games of the week for 10/04/09: Dragon drawing edition photo

I had a video I wanted to post with this week's GotW, but embedding was disabled on it, so really, screw it and screw whoever disables their Youtube videos. Instead, I made a drawing of a dragon that I'm using for a header image and you'll just have to deal with that. I've decided the dragon's name is Dragon. Dragon the dragon. He's a dragon.

Speaking of dragons, videogames were played this week. Hit the jump, as always, to check out what games they were. It's really important and stuff.

Sterling: I've been playing Undead Knights after downloading the demo and finding out it's the full game. It's fucking great, too, in spite of its design problems. There's something very badass about commanding an army of zombies and making them pull a man to the ground and swamp the poor bastard. Considering how sick I am of zombie games, I'm impressed. I've also been playing Rock Band Unplugged, which is surprisingly good, even though I get confused by the buttons sometimes and fuck up big-time.

On the non-PSP front, I've been playing South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play. Can't really talk about that yet, though. I'm still on a big Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare kick as well.

Grim: At the suggestion of Anthony, I purchased Immortal Defense and proceeded to forget about eating and sleeping while playing for hours on end. What a wonderful gem of a game that is. Also on the topic of tower defense, I downloaded PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, a game I had always wanted to try but couldn't due to lacking a PlayStation 3. It's as great as everyone says it is, although the difficulty (for getting perfect runs) is higher than I would've guessed. It's those goddamn spiders, I tell ya!

Lastly, Half-Minute Hero, which I desperately want more than any other handheld game right now. My favorite part has been getting my hero leveled up as high as possible without running out of money to replenish my thirty seconds. Being able to plow through enemies in one hit and even kill the boss in, like, a second is pure awesome. Who would have thought grinding could actually be enjoyable?

Sterling: I love how Half-Minute Hero is as much a true puzzle game as a gimmicky RPG joke. I was worried about how long they could draw out that single gimmick, but the potential the demo shows is amazing.

Grim: Agreed. I almost didn't download the demo when I saw how much the game will cost -- that's how convinced I was -- but I'm so glad I did. Plus, the self-referential lost in translation dialog is pretty funny too.

North: This week I'm playing catch-up after being away at TGS for ever a week. Lots of review code is still on my desk, so I've mostly been playing that. Demon's Souls is still punishing me, as are the later levels of Disgaea 2 on PSP. Speaking of the PSP, despite what some photographs I took might suggest, I really love this little PSPgo. I replayed UmJammer Lammy last night. Love that game. I'm also reviewing Gran Turismo and PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, both of which are awesome games.

Burch: I've been playing two games that Jim should try:

- Gridrunner Revolution, because it may possibly make you rethink how much you dislike Jeff Minter

- RunMan: Race Around the World, because it is the best Sonic game ever made that doesn't include Sonic in it.

Sterling: How much are these games and can a shitty laptop play them?

Burch: RunMan's free and not very processor-intensive. Revolution is $20 and requires a sort-of-not-shitty computer, but there's a free demo (which doesn't showcase the best parts of the game, but can at least show you how it'll run).

Sterling: Jeff Minter's not to have one thin dime of my money. The other one will get played, though.

Burch: You could always try the demo and ask him for a copy if it runs well.

Ross: I've mostly been playing Borderlands, which is [redacted]! That's actually pretty much it. Oh, that and Mario & Luigi.

Rey: Rocking Metal Gear Solid, FF7, Twisted Metal 2 on the Go.

Anyone find it crazy these fuckers were on multiple discs when we were kids, and now they're in our pockets?

Meta.

Bennett: Been spending the majority of my time with PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe and loving every minute of it, but I have also been enjoying Salamander and the Parodius collection on my shiny new PSP-3000.

Cantler: Lots of Super Puzzle Fighter, Moreu! Justice Gakuen and Street Fighter Alpha 2, all of which are always very good. Also played the Need For Speed: Shift demo, which was quite the opposite of good. Not sure who was supposed to send me the review copy of that, but I'm glad they forgot.

Chester: Playing Borderlands, which I'm not allowed to talk about. Claptrap is in it, and there are a bunch of guns -- that much I can confirm. Also been playing the PSN game Critter Crunch, and Dead Space Extraction on the Wii, which, so far, is surprisingly well-written.

Concelmo: Finished Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and have officially declared it my favorite game of the year so far. Such a perfect package.

Also started the Dark Cloud series for the first time, but then Conrad -- who I respect more than words -- suggested I skip the first game and just play Dark Cloud 2. Which I was going to do, but then the OCD/completionist side of me yelled at me for not playing the first one. But then I realized how in love with Conrad I am again and popped in 2 once more.

I don't know what to do! Do you guys have any advice? :)

Holmes: Can't help you, Chad. Sorry! I will forever associate the Dark Cloud games with an ex-girlfriend who dumped me and stole my GameCube. She loved the series.

As for me, I have more in common than usual with Nick and Dale this week. Like Nick, I've been playing Dead Space Extraction, and agree with him on the writing. Also agree with Dale on UmJammer Lammy. Love that game. Also love R-Type Delta and Jumping Flash! 2: Bit Trouble in Little Muu, which I also bought on PSN this week.

Also played some PS3 demos that I've been putting off, like inFamous and Uncharted 2. I didn't like either of them at all. If there was any doubt before, this week made it clear to me: I prefer the days when Sony Computer Entertainment produced cute, unusual, and thoroughly videogame videogames over the "virtual actors staring in virtual Hollywood / virtual action movie games" they churn out today.

Finally, got back into You, Me and the Cubes. Should have the review done pretty soon. I'm telling you, this game is HARD.

Razak: I downloaded the new RunMan and am having a blast with that. I wanted to get Dead Space Extraction, but my Best Buy has yet to get it in. Very disappointing and odd. Otherwise, nothing new for me. Still enjoying Mario and Luigi a lot and contemplating picking up the second Prof. Layton. My DS is getting so much love.

Sarkar: I finally went through and five-starred every single song in The Beatles: Rock Band! I sang the majority of the songs, and I played most of the rest on drums. I took care of a few of them on guitar, but in order to five-star "Birthday," I had to switch over to bass. Man, that song is tough! In case you're curious, I played drums on Hard, and everything else on Expert.

I've also been spending a lot of time with the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta/demo, and it's highly impressive. I was a part of the original multiplayer beta back in June, and at the time, Naughty Dog was only showing off two modes and two or three maps. This time around, there's a lot more content, and I'm really getting into it. The demo got rid of even the slightest notion in my mind that the multiplayer modes in Uncharted 2 would feel tacked-on; this is a deep, satisfying experience, and it's going to be a legitimate competitor with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for my online multiplayer shooter time this fall.

Runman, Machinarium (Demo), and L4D on the PC front, all brilliant in totally different ways. I've also been loving my PSP lately, playing a lot of Disgaea 2 and RB: Unplugged. I also tried the Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 demo on Master Ninja, but got my ass handed to me. I played some Vampire Savior and KoF XII as well. But mostly, it's just been college.

All this talk of Um Jammer Lammy prompted me to borrow a copy from my friend who found it in a freakin grocery store for $5! Lucky prick! Anyways, it's an amazing game and I wish more rhythm games would let you improvise.

I don't want to boast, at all (seriously), but this week I was at my local CEX, (british store), and found a copy of Kingdom hearts, the game I wanted to play ever since it came out, Good news so far, but I was apprehensive of the quality of the game disc, seeing as the case was a original print from 2002. Got the game, expecting to have a shitty disc, not the case. I dare say the disc looks bloody new, not a single scratch or ANY marks. Hell, it smells new as well, I could not believe my luck at getting such a good copy of the game, and did some serious praying to the big dude above when I went home.

I was fucking overjoyed, the original print of the game is damn hard to find, and pretty expensive if you do find a copy. How much I got it for? 10 pounds, which is like 10 bucks, no really that much. Needless to say, I was

Been playing the game and it's really awesome, Squaresoft really knews how to make stunning games, the mixture of Disney and Squaresoft is effortlessly pulled off. It's a fine, fine experience, and one I don't want to end soon.

Apart from that, I spent time with the phoenix wright games.

I had fall break this week so I had more time to play video games this week. I finished Layton 1 and Shadow Complex. I'm now going back to DQ V and finishing up Little King's Story.

Bought the Oddworld pack on Steam, but when I try to run a game, it crashes. bawwww.

Left 4 Dead too, I have not been much into it for some reason but its still fun.

I cleared Phoenix Wright on Monday morning, and now I am making my way further through Contact. this game is so damn interesting, i will try making a reveiw when I finish.

Oh yeah, also received Mirror's Edge from the mail several days ago. This game is pretty addictive, it gets a bit frustrating but i enjoy progressing, it feels like being in an action film.

My advice? Beat 1, watch a youtube or read a wiki for Chain of Memories, then play 2, it will blow your mind out.

Sounds like a good time guys. I've been playing the hell out of Guitar Hero 5 which I have out from Gamefly. I am seriously consider purchasing this one all the new features are awesome. Finished my hard play-through of Arkham Asylum and been playing around with the new DLC. On the handheld side I got some time in with Dissidia and Scribblenauts.
I'm holding rock band nights every Monday @ a local bar here in Vegas. Rock band 2 and Beatles Rock Band and this week I'll feature GH5.

Thanks to Topher's Dreamcast anniversary post, I got "Ultimate Shooting Collection" for the Wii. Radirgy > ALL. This is probably the most fun I ever had with a Bullet Hell SHMUP. There's something about the absorbtion system that's addictive. Plus , the music is surprisingly good and the graphics is what drew me in. Thanks Toph <3

I was also playing House of the Dead: Overkill. Fucking terrible.....the cursing was funny at first, but got old quick. I think because the stages dragged on is because I hated it too.

Also, Mario and Luigi 3 and pre-ordered Demon Souls after there was alot of praise everywhere.

ZOMGWAYOFTHESAMURAI3 IN 8 DAYS!

Sprung a few PS1 games from my parent's house: XenoGears, MegaManX5, Tobal No. 2 and Bushido Blade 2. Bushido Blade, even after 10 years, still holds its own as a game, low polys, goofy dialog and story, all of it. It still plays.

Played a little Mass Effect and re-affirmed my appreciation of Wrex, as a character and a Krogan. I completed Splosion Man, and scored a sweet freebie premium theme! Also, I rediscovered my love of Street Fighter and fighting games after a long hiatus with RPGs and things.

Beating Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. EXCELLENT game if you're a fan. Also dabbling back in my press copy of Demon's Souls (planning on buying the retail release this week), and Sigma 2 here and there.

@Mushman
I second Sonic's advice. Beat 1, then promptly buy 2. Also after beating 1, read the wiki page for Chain of Memories: it's a throwaway side story.

Advice taken and duly noted, I was actually tempted to buy 2 shorty after it came out, but thought it would be insane on missing out on the game that made it so popular in the first place.

Will do dude, I have been hearing bad things about Chain of Memories and the reviews on metacritic on it are awful.

Also, I find it funny you mention the new KD game, I finally got the first one, only to realize there are TWO others I must go though to whet my appetite for the series!! :)

I was playing Fallout 3 but then my copy of Valkyria Chronicles showed up so I've been playing that instead. It's pretty amazing.

I tried the Machinarium demo and I loved the artwork, but point and click puzzle games really aren't my thing. I wish there was a way I could have all the artwork without having to actually do the gameplay.

It might actually be the final game to sell me on the system, even over MGS.

I went overboard this week. I bought persona, disgaea 2, gran turismo, Pixeljunk monsters, little kings story, and I'm still planning on getting Brutal Legend.
It feels like I cut a hole in my wallet, but I don't care. These games are going to keep me busy for a while.

Persona PSP and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. I have complicated feelings towards the Kingdom Hearts series, but I do enjoy the games. Also played a bit of Resistance Retribution. I like it a lot!

I get my cast off Thursday. Words cannot describe how happy that makes me. Soon, getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night will no longer be the greatest challenge ever.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days! It's actually just average so far, but the Kingdom Hearts fan in me can't help but enjoy it. (Spoilers: it's not as good as KH2. Or KH1, if you actually liked that one.)

Otherwise, Rock Band, Rock Band Unplugged, Retro Game Challenge, and avoiding my classwork.

Not anytime soon for Toys R Us is having a 2 for 1 sale. Getting Brutal Legend, Valkyria Chronicles, and Kingdom Hearts for the DS. I'm so glad buying Halo: ODST scored me a $20 gift card. 3 games for $80!

A lot of different games this week.

I decided to take a break from Saints Row 2 and try replaying some of GTAIV. I still really like it. It doesn't try to be what Saints Row is, and Saints Row doesn't try to be what GTAIV is. They shouldn't be compared because they set out for totally different things.
Also started Mass Effect again in preparation for ME2, so I'll play that on and off. Played the Brutal Legend demo, which convinced me to pre-order. The trailers made it seem way less humorous than it actually is. It's genuinely funny when little bits aren't cut out of the jokes. It's almost as if Double Fine was making fun of how non-humorous their trailers were.
Got back to my 20-hour Persona 3 game, maybe I'll finish it without getting bored.

Playing Mass Effect for the...third time now? I've lost count.

I had sworn off the stuff for good but my paranoia that Shepard's decisions weren't 100% how I wanted them to be for ME2 led me to start over yet again.

Other than that nothing new. Too poor to buy anything, too rich to complain about it, and just waiting for Brutal Legend and DJ Hero.

There's the Van Halen game this week. I'll probably gnash my teeth together and force myself through that piss poor 80s romp. My lil' bro will dig it though.

This week I started playing an odd assortment of games. I went out and got Scribblenauts after putting it off for some reason. I also got a copy of Final Fantasy III for the DS for $12 and decided it was time for me to play a Final Fantasy game. I have to say that I'm not really enjoying the over complicated jobs system. If this is was the Final Fantasy series is like, count me out. I'll give it a few more days but I'm just not enjoying it as much as I enjoy the Dragon Quest series. I did some grinding in The Dark Spire, which I just can't get enough of. I love the art style, the music, the odd sense of humor and I really like the lack of story line. It makes it one of those games you can pick up and put down at leisure, go for weeks at a time without playing it.

In preperation of Spirit Tracks, my wife started playing Windwaker over and has taken a sizable chunk out of it this weekend while being sick. We also brought our completion level of Lego Indiana Jones (wii) up to 92.5%. Almost done with that!

I myself have been trying to get through the last gauntlet of bosses in The World Ends with You. While I still think that Sho Minamimoto is the hardest boss in the game, Possessed Uzuki and Kariya are pretty bad too (of course I am trying to get ultra rare pin drops). I'm in the last Dungeon in Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story, still making hooked on SMT Devil Survivor, On Chapter 4 of Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon, Still addicted to Arkham Asylum's Challenge Mode. I also got into the Uncharted 2 MP Beta. Its a helluva of a lot better than I expected, and I might be the only person who feels that the gunplay has been vastly improved over UC1. Oh and I managed to get a modded 360 from a friend with 50 games and started playing Street Fighter 4. Alot more gaming than I thought for the week
