Jim's traveling this week, so you're getting your Games of the Week fix from a different source. Thrilling.
You've no doubt seen this video by Miles Fisher, where he covers a Talking Heads song and puts
it to a video where he mimics American Psycho. That movie already had a Talking Heads song in its soundtrack but it was clearly the wrong choice both metaphorically and literally. It's also probably NSFW, somewhere about the point they recreate the threesome scene.
Anyway, I don't care if you've seen it before because it's awesome and should be watched again and again. Also, games were played by people this week. What follows is a chronicle of said game playing. You can, of course, discuss what you have been playing in the comments. I think that's how this is supposed to work.
Sterling: Loads of MAG, while getting considerably more drunk. Started the day kicking absolute ass and my playing got worse and worse before the big 256-player battle against Zipper. I believe their plan was to fill us full of so much free wine and beer that by the time the final battle came, we were all too fucked to beat them. Did not entirely work. Anyway, the review's coming Monday, so enjoy that.
Between that, I've been playing "Remember how shit London is" and Final Fantasy VII on the PSP for my many lengthy flights. Needing to get home soon so I can get to my BioShock 2 and Blood Bowl.
North: Not to sound like a broken record, but I'm playing Final Fantasy XIII. I'm at the very end today, and I'm certain I'll beat it this weekend. I don't know, maybe it's because I skipped some optional missions, but there was a huge difficulty spike. I'm getting my ass handed to me now. I told the guys in the office this earlier, but I actually wore out an original SIXAXIS playing this game.
Razak: I'm simply waiting for Desperate Struggle next week so I'm going back and perfecting my NSMB Wii skills and tearing through Spirit Tracks. Yea, Zelda and Mario at the same time. I couldn't be happier.
Toletino: Been playing the Star Trek Online beta, and hating GiantBomb's Jeff Gerstmann for making me seriously consider getting a lifetime subscription. In an effort to stop myself that, I've started doing my taxes.
Concelmo: Finished Darksiders (LOVED IT!), and started on the nostalgic revisiting of Final Fantasy VIII and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. FFVIII is still a great game, but, all these years later, I still can't fully embrace the Draw system.
Twilight Princess, on the other hand, is a game I am loving even more since the first time I played it three (!) years ago. It is such a great Zelda game, and inexplicably dismissed by a lot of fans.
I am having such a great time with it, that I feel a feature about its epicness coming on soon ... :)
Ross: I played through and completed VVVVVV this week, which is a fantastic game. I also played 1 v 100 for the first time since the beta, and I forgot how much fun it was.
Niero: Since we just moved I've had a solid week of Furniture Assembler 3, Box Unpacker: Cable's Revenge, and Puzzle Socku. My only saving grace has been ghetto-rigging Rock Band 2 in the living room on a projector. Also, my ION drum set just came in so I'm going to enjoy it this weekend. Whee!
Perlee: I've gone back this week to demo diving on XBLA. Go pick up ten or so demos, indie games included, and good to go. There's some really terrible games on that service, but occasionally, something with a really cool idea comes out. There was this awful one called Hypno, but had a neat, bare-bones mind control element.
Also, I don't know if you know this about Indie Games, FMV of neighborhood girls awkwardly reading poorly written dialoge is 2010's trend of the year. You heard it here first, people.
Gutierrez: Jerking off to all things Mass Effect 2. No seriously, I do the dirty with my blue pillow which I [call] Liara.
Chester: Playing BioShock 2, a bit of Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, and still working through Darksiders. Videogames!
I've been playing my free copy of Bioshock I got when I pre-purchased Bioshock 2 on Steam. Such a great game :) Played it on 360 back in 07, and I can say that the PC version is much more enjoyable.
I 100% Bayonetta and I got Critter Crunch and Braid since they were on sale on the psn. Braid was meh but I love Critter also playing borderlands and some uncharted 2 online.
I finished VVVVVV this week. An instant classic for me.
I'm also playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. Meh, it's still a clusterfuck like the first one.
I finished Muramasa: The Demon Blade, and was satisfied by Momohime's true ending more than Kisuke's. Getting the Oboro Muramasa is one of the more tedious things I've done in a while, but I loved that game.
Oh man, it's been a tremendous week. I finished New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Ico, and Metroid Prime (on the Trilogy)! NSMBWii: Holy crap, 9-7. Ico: froze right after the "Fin" faded away at the end, but it's okay because there isn't anything to unlock in the American version anyway. It was delightful. Metroid Prime: Hell to the fuck yeah. I never had a problem with the Gamecube controls, but now it will probably be hard to ever go back. This is, I believe, only the second time I've played all the way through to the end.
Close to beating Dracula in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia as well. Verily, he is a bastard, and I need to vary my attacks. Or level up, or something.
I've actually not been playing too many videogames aside from the usual Rock Band and MW2 this week, but there were some exceptions. Namely, I went back and played Bad Company after seeing the campaign reveal for Bad Company 2. My God, that game is (In my opinion, at least) still miles ahead of MW2 in many ways. Also, thanks to a tip-off from a friend of mine, I managed to get to play BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. Holy crap, as if BB could get any better....
Other then that though, my gaming has been low this week. I instead focused on job-hunting and getting re-acquainted with my drum set. I'm so glad I did too...I had forgotten how amazing one feels when making music.
Played a little Semi-Renegade female Mass Effect 1, a little arrogant human male mage Dragon Age, a bunch of "So you're serious about this RTS thing" Brutal Legend.
REALLY enjoying BL. Kinda feels underrated: There's been some legitimate Uncharted 2 level epicness in this game and a bunch of smart design choices.
In addition, revisited Killzone 2 Multiplayer, the Dark Void demo (I clearly need to buy that game or something) and Mirror's Edge. Its a great game, ya know. Slow motion slide and shoot is super-effective. The fact that Faith knows fuck-all about guns (implicitly) makes the occassional weapon kills pretty satisfying...
Almost done with the first Phoenix Wright (very last trial of the last chapter) and I've been working on my Mass Effect 1 game so that I have a character to start with when I start ME2. Goddamn, I wish I could just put my 360 save on my PC harddrive or something.
Glory of Heracles and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. I cannot wait for No More Heroes 2 and Tatsunoko VS Capcom. Super excited. (I also heard Tales of Graces is coming out this Summer via a scan from Nintendo Power on GoNintendo. I CANNOT wait to get another RPG on the Wii)
Also, I'm horribly addicted to a popular show from a friend lending me all the season's on DVD, so I don't think I'm going to be playing many games this week. (I would say what show, but I do not trust the internet and I don't want anyone spoiling it for me. the show that is.)
Been replaying ME in an attempt to boost my Shepard and change a few things story-wise to import into ME2. Also been replaying NMH to increase excitement for NMH2. Holy shit, Speed Booster, Bad Girl, and Jeane are hard as hell on Bitter.
On the handheld side, still playing Disgaea 2 on my PSP. My god the game has an insane number of things to do other than progressing through the story. Once I beat that I plan to get to Spirit Tracks. Based on my current progress in Disgaea 2, that'll happen in about...2 years.
I got stuck in Machinarium again, played lots and lots of fighting games over GGPO and have apparently now made 4 people play the first Phoenix Wright. the latter makes me especially happy as that is truly one of the best series there are, although I'm not sure if I would even call it a videogame tbh as much as a book or something.
I tried getting into Mass Effect after buying it for £3.50 or something ridiculous like that on the Steam sale. about 4 hours into it and I'm not entirely convinced if I like it or not. I will continue playing it after beating No More Heroes, which I finally got around to playing this past week as well. I just beat ranking battle 8 against Shinobu (awful, awful battle) and so far the game is pretty fun. there are some control issues but I definitely want to play through this one unless this gets either really monotonous (which I could totally see happening) or something happens to the game later on that destroys it (doubtful).
the week before the one that just passed (stay with me) I beat The World Ends With You and wasn't too sure whether I liked it or not, or even WHAT I liked about it. this past week I have thus started replaying it trying to find the hidden files and whatnot (which is a bullshit gameplay element by the way) to see if I can figure it out. I'm still not sure though.
Some Dragon Age. Getting close to the end I thinks. Like it, but doing playthroughs with the other classes seem a little daunting when I'm already in 60 hours.
MW2 multiplayer, dying a lot there. And started Lock's Quest. Good times.
