Home #Games Of The Week

Screw it, I can't think of any obscure nostalgia or British comedy to post this week, so you're all getting The Hernandez again. You wish you had his style, his grace, and his killer perm. Only The Hernandez can make awkwardly messing about with a stick look this good. God bless Him.

And on that note, it's time to indulge in the weekly self-importance that is Games of the Week. In this thrilling episode of Games of the Week, the Destructoid staff will tell you their games ... of the WEEK!

Too much excitement for the frontpage to handle, which is why you can read the rest of this sensational article beyond the jump.

Savant: Picked up (and completed) Bionic Commando: Rearmed on XBLA. There is a lot of content in there for only $10. I was really surprised. Also, I picked up Fallout and Fallout 2 this week (for a cool $6 for the pair) via digital distro. Haven't had a chance to play either of 'em much, but I can already see that I'm gonna fall in love with 'em.

I've also been playing a lot of Guitar Hero III after picking up the DragonForce DLC pack. I'm happy to say I can pass all three of 'em on Expert, but I still can't get past the stupid-hard beginning on "Through the Fire and Flames" Ah, well.

Dale: Again, still, I'm playing what I feel to be one of the coolest RPGs ever made, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. But, wait you ask, didn't this come out years ago? Yes, yes it did. It deserves repeat plays. I'm also starting something that I missed the first time around, Lost Odyssey

DMV: Disgaea 3, Resistance: Fall of Man, and some Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Exciting, no?

Nick: Lots of Rock Band 2 for review (and only because I had to), a fair amount of Pure for review, and a smidgen of WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 (Xbox 360) for a preview. I also played many hours of Guitar Hero World Tour on the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii, along with some Guitar Hero On Tour Decades -- but other than "they are all games that you play," I can't say anything about them yet.

Chad: I had a pretty busy week, so I only had time for some Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty, Cho Aniki, and Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of Pulsating Pectorals.

Wait, booty, pectorals, and half-naked men shooting man beams out their crotches? I feel dirty.

Colette: Mostly playing Infinite Undiscovery, although I am proud to say that now that I've finished the review I won't have to do any more of that, a little bit of Rock Band in anticipation for Rock Band 2, Castle Crashers, and (GLEE) I'm finally in the last level of Rhythm Tengoku Gold -- it's hard as hell, but I made it! Woo!

Jim: Having done the other half of the Shitfinite BumShitFuckery review with Colette, I echo her joy that I no longer feel obligated to continue "enjoying" tri-Ace's latest insult to everything that JRPGs have ever achieved. Other console games include Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise which is fun, if a little unoriginal, and about half a minute of Shred Nebula. I am never touching that game again.

On the portable side, I finally found a copy of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and was surprised at how excellent I thought it was. I also picked up Silent Hill: Origins, and aside from the crap story, pathetic Pyramid Head clone and unforgiving enemies, I must say that it's surprisingly not that shit, gameplay-wise. It's actually pretty scary to boot. It's just a shame that it does nothing but declare Konami's franchise-raping intentions with the Silent Hill product.

Brad: I played a ton of Tales of Vesperia and rotated a few games of Madden in the process. I also played a few minutes of Facebreaker on the PS3. Overall, I've actually had a decent week of gaming!

Samit: I've been spending a good amount of time with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 for review. While the Photo Game Face mode has been unbelievably frustrating (i.e., it doesn't work as advertised because of EA's broken Web site managing tools), the game itself is a lot of fun. I also rocked out on Thursday night with Dtoiders MaxVest and shipero in Rock Band -- man, I love that guitar part in Blondie's "Call Me."

Early in the week, I made my way further through Ravenholm in Half-Life 2. Father Gregory is such a strange character. And there is nothing more awesome than using the gravity gun to fire circular saw blades at zombies (or even better, a line of zombies coming at you) to slice them in half. And I was feeling nostalgic for Call of Duty 4, but when I tried to do the FNF thing, it was apparent that my wireless connection wasn't up to snuff -- the lag literally killed me. Finally, I've continued to play the NHL 09 demo on and off, because it's so awesome, but I won't actually get the game until probably the middle of next week.

Topher: Mostly Gokujou Parodious, and I finally finished Rhythm Tengoku Gold, though I can't imagine ever really being finished with that game. I also played some Castle Crashers, DonPachi, Rock Band 2, and Um Jammer Lammy just for Um Jammer Lulz.

Conradical to the Max: Mostly Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise. Samurai Shodown II and Castle Crashers  have also taken up a good bit of gaming time. And I popped Halo 3 in for one round of really depressing multiplayer.

Samit: How was it depressing? Like...you weren't doing well, or you weren't having fun?

Conrad: Both, really. There were only about four other people in the game, all of whom much more skilled at it than I, and it was just a blowout. I'm perfectly comfortable with my lack of skill in a game that I almost never play, but spawning and dying is never really a formula for fun.

Also, mulitplayer online is typically something I prefer to do with people that I actually have some sort of relationship with. Playing against random strangers is not very enjoyable for me.

Hamza: Halo 3, and same what Conrad said. Playing with randoms is boring as fuck. I only have fun with the European FNF and regular FNF Dtoiders now.

Also been playing Castle Crashers ... by myself still ;_;

Topher: That's sad. You wanna join a game with me and Stella later?

Hamza: YES! What time?!

Topher: I dunno ... tonight, whenever I'm done Tomopopping and feel like playing sum gaems. I'll text you, yo.

While Topher and Hamza make out, why don't you tell us what YOU've been playing this week?

"What kind of cunt calls Viva Pinata unoriginal?"

I didn't call Viva Pinata unoriginal.

I called the near-identical sequel unoriginal.

Penny Arcade Adventures, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Fallout 1+2, which I will be terrible at until I bother reading the 100+ page manual.

lots of Rock Band 2 since I got it on Friday, N+ on the DS, Mercs 2, and NBA Street Homecourt which makes me want another NBA Jam.

Finishing up sidequests before tackling the final area of Tales of Vesperia. I have no idea what to do with myself after that.

I discovered this week that there are still a healthy amount of people who still play Shadowrun. God I missed that game. perhaps I'll keep playing that until the end of October when all the quality gaming starts to arrive

Buzz: Quiz TV - Works great both on and offline. There is something missing though. I would love to team up with my friends at home. Buzz is excellent for fun with your friends. Especially with the updated Trophies and PS-Eye support. It randomly takes photos with hilarious results

COD4 - Finally back online. Was a bit rusty. And yes, Samit really was lagging all over the place. Sometimes it was so hard to shoot him because he was zipping all over the level like crazy. Better work out your connection Samit. I would love to team up like before.

Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty - Awesome. Loved every second of it. I wish it was a bit longer. Can't wait for the next chapter. I miss Clank.

Mercenaries 2 - I was a bit skeptic but I like it. Yes there are some bugs and glitches but it doesn't kill the game. I had more fun with Mercs 2 than with GTA4.

I know mmo's aren't popular around here, but come on, one of the biggest opponent's to WoW comes out this week and nobody's mentioned it yet? Someone here has got to be playing it besides me. I've been playing it all day and it's blown me away in every aspect. A surprisingly shit ton of story, along with the funnest pvp ever in an mmorpg (I normally never pvp, but they give you xp, loot, money, and pvp xp when you kill real people), makes it one of the best mmorpg's I've played yet. I feel like I'm getting paid type all this, but I'm not, so I won't even say the name.

I've finished Bionic Commando Rearmed and while I really like the last boss and what comes after it, I don't feel any will to go back to that excruciating last level.
The difficulty spike is just jaw-dropping.

And what upset me more is that both music from the last boss and the following moment are my favorite and are completely missing from the purchasable soundtrack.

Been playing more of that TF2 and having fun with some games I finally had opportunity to give my money too, which are MDK2 and Die by the Sword + Limb from Limb Expansion, from my dearly newborn Good Old Games.

I still have a lot of unfinished games and I don't know where to begin with... might go back and put a conclusion to Assassin's Creed, if it doesn't end up being a chore.

Castle Crashers and hopefully Rock Band 2.

I didn't actually buy myself a copy seeing as I never play it alone. I mooch my music rhythm games off other people.

Lots of Rez, Resistance, and Rock Band. (And Smash Bros., but that doesn't start with 'R'.)

I'm four direct assault playthroughs from having everything unlocked in Rez, and it's nice to see my name at the top of all my Dtoid friends' leaderboards for something /other/ than Yaris.

Resistance can go suck a cock.

Aaaaaaaand, I finally mastered Foreplay. Long Time. Foreplay/Long Time, in Rock Band, on expert drums. I have learned the hard way there is no way you can talk about that song in casual conversation without clearly spelling out for everyone that you are talking about playing toy drums when you're mentioning how fast you can move your left hand now.

Castle Crashers and U.N. Squadron mostly this week.

Also picked up the xbox Conan for 15 dollars. Its brutality and unintentionally humorous storyline are keeping me interested.

More Rock Band, knowing Europe has got a chance in hell of getting Rock Band 2 this year, Castle Crashers, which i've nearly finished a second time but with Red Knight, some Crackdown and some Silent Hill 2, which resulted in many fresh pairs of underwear.

Rock Band 2, PC TF2, and I finally finished Castle Crashers by myself, grrrr.
Protip: don't play Insane mode in Castle Crashers by yourself. Bosses get faster as you hurt them, until they move at warp speed. Fix online please :)

Bumped up my Ikaruga score to 2,700,000 while listening to RFGO and beat Castle Crashers for the seventh time while listening to RFGO... while singing along with RFGO. Best weekend ever.

TF2 and Castle Crashers mostly, but I attempted to get back into Unreal and CoD but just couldn't force myself to enjoy playing with randoms. I honestly hate randoms for some reason. I also, played a couple songs in Guitar Hero 3 to make sure I still could for when World Tour comes out. I hope it doesn't get harder, I'm at my limit with Expert in GH3 as it is.
