It's a picture of a tyrannosaurus rex, which is a dinosaur. I literally can't think of anything else to talk about this week because I've got to do this in ten minutes and want to go back to playing videogames, rather than writing about them. Look at the T-Rex. He's really happy. He's thinking about meat.
As per usual, videogames happened to the Destructoid editors this week, and you can hit the jump to find out which exact videogames they were. The T-Rex did not play videogames this week. That is because he is a T-Rex, and whoever heard of a T-Rex playing videogames?
North: Sinful RPG-fest here: I've got my face in my DS this week, with lots of time going to the boobalicious Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier and the just plain delicious Devil Survivor. Speaking of devils, I'm also into Devil Summoner 2, and I'm having a devil of a time with Final Fantasy VIII, which I started replaying just recently. Also, Final Fantasy XIII's demo has made the rounds a few times.
Bennett: Still working on Class of Heroes and Plants vs Zombies for review, along with Diner Dash for 360, which is much more challenging than I expected it to be. Finally got my hands on Hammerin Hero, which is delightful, and started my replay of Final Fantasy VIII inspired by all the beautiful music I saw played at the Distant Worlds concert. Snuck in a little Rock Band 2 last night as well, which was fun to get back to.
Razak: It's been all MadWorld all the time for me. I'm enjoying it for the most part, and love the old school arcade feel of collecting high scores. As a challenging game though it isn't really doing it for me. I don't think that was the point though. You get the feeling they were going more for a challenge to get really high scores in the levels over a challenge to beat the levels. In that case the game is win.
Sterling: Most of my week has been spent with Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce which I am reviewing. It's good, but it's clearly designed for the kind of four-player PSP action that is NOT going to happen in America, and the game makes no allowances for single players. It's very difficult and my hands have started to ache quite badly from playing the PSP so much.
Also been working on clearing up some games we've missed out on reviewing, starting with OutRun Online Arcade. Only trouble is, I suck at driving games and can't win a single course. That's going to be an interesting write up. Outside of work-based gaming, I've been rocking Killzone 2 as usual, and tried out a some of the new Left 4 Dead modes. Good show!
Concelmo: A lot of Valkyria Chronicles and a lot of Lock's Quest. Yay!
Holmes: Still haven't really started in on Valkyria Chronicles. I just get the feeling that once I start, I wont be able to stop.
That wasn't a problem with Impossible Mission and Legend of Kage 2, both on the DS. They may be $10 games, but that doesn't mean that have to be boring and predictable. It's a shame, because they both feature some surprisingly beautiful sprite work. Too bad their game designs stink.
Then there's all the stuff I got at Gamestop's Gamer's Day; Mushroom Men Wii (average gameplay, great game world, amazing music) Manhunt 2 Wii (laughably bad), Obscure 2 Wii (less laughable, still bad), Silent Hill: Origins PSP (not bad so far), Metal Slug 7 DS (it's better than Metal Slug 6, but that's not saying much), and Namco Museum Virtual Arcade 360 (best $15 I've ever spent)
Also played Dr Mario for DSiWare. It doesn't suck.
North: I hate when people say "Kage" like "cage."
RYE-YOU?!?!?
Dyson: You're Thai, quit your bitching. And everyone knows that it's pronounced ROO.
Leray: How *should* "Kage" be pronounced, then? Kah-gay?
And Ryu is obviously ree-you.
For the rare moments that I've had to actually plop down in front of a TV, I've been playing Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. I tell you: that game is hard. Like, balls hard. I'm not sure where I'm going with that, but anyway...
As far as retro things that aren't Chrono Trigger go, I've been trying to get past the second level of R-Type every spare five seconds I get (I am clearly not capable of playing schmups). More enjoyably, but just as successfully, I've been trying to get past level 8-1 in Super Castlevania IV. It's the one with the spiders and the flying eyeballs and the axe armors and the copious amounts of instant spike death.
So to sum it all up, Chrono Trigger is awesome, Radiant Dawn is hard, and I am strangely, perhaps masochistically, drawn to games that take great joy in OHKOs.
Also I was about to replay Final Fantasy VII when my PSX memory card turned up missing. Boo.
Also, L4D. Although, it's been difficult to find time for any gaming with finals coming up :'(
Just last night, y0j1 turned me on to the greatness of SF4 Championship Mode. SO I can assure you where my time will be spent in the coming week.
Also, Henry Hatsworth. That game is just freaking awesome. Which means that I must not have made it to the hard part yet. But I love the balance between puzzle game and platforming. Good show, indeed.
Also played Runner, was confused, reminded me of Fuertzebruta O_o
...I miss video games...
FFIV is pretty 'awwwwriight' tho.
It'll be a while before I recover from my newfound crippling depression.
I suppose I could go for some golden age PC RPGs in the meantime.
As in games, I have been playing Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones again, I might finally finish it for real with a 20/20 army. I never managed to clear the Tower of Valni until yesterday.
Also a little bit of Phantom Hourglass, but not much.
On the Sony front, I played some Jak 3, Street Fighter 4, RE5 demo, Darkstalkers 3, and Rock Band 2. Good times all around.
Interesting side-note: WHERE IS EPISODE THREE, VALVE?!?!?!!?!??!
I'm planning on checking out some XBL games this coming week, specifically Braid and Dishwasher.
Also Bit.Trip Beat is AWESOME.
I've also started up Portal and Half-Life 2 again after downloading The Orange Box on Steam for a ridicilous discount. It's superbly better on the PC, thats for sure.
Oh and some Punch-Out. And lots of Crazy Taxi on Facebook because I want to be the very best that no one ever was.
I love dinosaurs!
To bad there aren't more games with them :(
I've been chipping away at Retro Game Challenge. The last challenge is a doozy for sure. I've completed everything but Guadia Quest and Haggleman 3. HM3 has a ridiculous difficulty curve. I only have the time to play here and there in bursts, so in between sessions I leave my DS closed in stand-by mode and plug it in to give it some juice every now and then. Also managed to turn on my 360 for the first time in weeks and played some more Bioshock.
REE-OO
Ka-g-eh
Ka-g-eh*
*not sure about this one but if its japanese i think i might be right
*Animal Crossing: City Folk- Nook almost screwed me on turnip prices but then a friend's town bailed me out! Also I bought the crown and now I'm pretty.
*R-Type: TG-16 version on the Virtual Console. I can get to level 4 without dying, but then.... yeah.
Xenogears
Pure, Unreal Tourney 3, and Infinite Undiscovery which I bought for $10 at Best Buy, played then traded in at Gamestop towards FEAR 2, Mirrors Edge and Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction.
Shitload of SSF2T:HDR
Giana Sisters DS, GTA:CTW, Locks Quest, Lost Magic, Contra 4, Disgaea DS, Pokemon Platinum, Space Invaders Extreme 2, and about 15 more DS games (incidentally I got a DS card)
Saints Row 2 online
Burnout Paradise
And probably some more I forgot.
So yeah I had a busy week of gaming. And now I'm considering Oblivion on PC just for the mods (since I'll be able to use a 360 pad).
Operation Darkness
Braid
Infinite Undiscovery
all three are well worth $10...but not quite worth full retail price
if anyone could explain exactly how this extremely confusing system awards/punishes you, please tell me. it would degrade my frustration a lot.
also got Rhythm Tengoku Gold (JAP), Contra 4 and Retro Game Challenge in the mail today (all of them imported as I prefer the japanese lyrics in RTG and neither Contra 4 nor RGC have even been released here...) and am very eager to start playing them. then there's Viewtiful Joe that I got a few weeks ago that I really need to finish so I can move on to the sequel...
