Games of the week for 05/11/08: Shilling friends edition photo

I can see why Nex enjoyed posting the Games of the Week feature when he was in charge of it, because it's essentially a tiny little soapbox upon which you can peddle any kind of crap you like. Since nobody even spends time reading it, eager as they are to post a reply telling us what they've been playing this week, I can essentially get away with cheap and tactless plugs for other Web sites.

Which is what I am going to do.

Morphine Nation is the Web site I used to own before I was hired by Destructoid. Essentially a social satire site, I'd write general commentary and comedy articles, and post comics about what an arsehole Skeletor is. Anyway, the site relaunched in blog format this year after I retired (since Destructoid took up all my time). They post some pretty nutty stuff, and I occasionally contribute -- check out my "Uncle Cheeky" series if you never want to sleep again.

A friend of mine called Brad Rychard has launched a Web site for his comic series Cane/Hat Man, which is all about a man with a hat and a cane who likes to stab people. The premise is rather silly, as are the comics, but there is some inspired stuff in there. Not for everyone, but worth a look.

Hit the jump to see what we've playing (clue: there's a lot of theft in our games, some of it grand and involving automobiles).

Hamza: Nothing but Grand Theft Auto IV.

Samit: What Hamza said.

Oh wait, I did hop into CoD 4 for a bit last night during FNF. But other than that, it's been all GTA IV, all the time.

Colette: Persona 3 FES. I don't give a shit about any other game right now. Seriously.

Jim: GTA IV, of course. I also had something of a PSP blowout thanks to my friend, the irrepressible Master Falls, who got me some nice deals. Sadly, a lot of my PSP gaming has been disappointing -- Killzone: Liberation proves that a rubbish game can get a lot of praise if it's on a system where great original titles are lacking, while Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is unbelievable cack. As for Parappa the Rappa, I finally tried more than a demo version after all these years and ... wow ... strict, just a little? Even Gitaroo Man has a semblance of forgiveness, and that's a tricky game.

Ah well, I at least lucked out on Final Fantasy Tactics, and Tales of Eternia looks swank for the few minutes I got with it at work. Noooow -- back to GTA IV

Niero: I gave into the guilty pleasures of demo whoring and tried everything there is to try for the PS3. I was pretty impressed with how polished the latest wave of demos were and pondered a future where we'd only see really high-quality demos or just less of them, now that the industry has found that trailers do a better job at selling games. Also, I've rediscovered Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! <3 Dexter345.

DMV: I've been blazing through Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, and am slowly chugging through Mother 3. The game is really odd in that everyone speaks in hiragana, but it's not like that means much to you. After FFT, I'm planning on starting Phantasy Star II, but I'm not sure how far I'll get into it, since I come home in 22 days. That's scary as hell.

Grim: Lots and lots of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on PSP -- I'll never grow tired of this game. Also, playing the same f***ing missions multiple times in GTA IV.

Chad: After 70+ hours I finally (finally!) beat Lost Odyssey. So tired. So cold. Need water ...

Gameboi: Like Hamza said, nothing but GTA IV. Nothing else exists right now.

Fronz: Just started Mario Kart Wii last night, and so far I'm a little disappointed. I like some of the additions to the series, but overall it seems like there's not a lot of content, and it's annoying to not be able to unlock more things by playing only multiplayer first. Maybe it's that I don't remember the older Mario Kart games too well, maybe it's because Super Smash Bros. Brawl is way more fun and fulfilling, but I think it's mainly that I'm sick of gold mushrooms helping 12th place players get trophies. I'll have to give it a few more days before I can make any final judgments though.

Nick: Just a lot of Grand Theft Auto IV when I have the chance. I'm still completely wrapped up in the game, and have yet to really find myself inclined to use cheat codes or go bat shit on the citizens of Liberty City. That says a lot for this game, I think.

Dipped into some Operation Darkness, have no idea what I'm doing, and am disappointed there are no werewolves immediately after starting the game. I'm also playing Liberty City Stories on the PSP when I'm not home, and Solitaire on my Q.

Jonathan: Digging R-Type Command, and to a lesser degree, Boom Blox. A review on the latter game should be popping up on the front page any second now. Also enjoying all the DS demos from the newly launched Nintendo Channel.

Topher: I haven't played much of anything this week because I started watching Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and it sucked me in to the point where I forgot that anything else existed. When that was over, it was as everyone else said; just GTA4. Though I did play some more Dino Run on teh webz. You should too, because it's awesome.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAND what have you been up to this week?

Oh Jeez. GTA4 when I'm home (And before my 360 decided it was its time and the red light show began). On the road I've been playing Nanostray 2 and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, both for the DS

I've been playing InDesign for a college newspaper, plane tickets to France and London, applications for ghetto co-ops and housing in Berkeley, and acceptance letters of student loans to pull myself into debt.

I had to return to Hollywood Video GTA IV :(

Same as pretty much everyone GTA IV.

Although I still have some way to go in the story. For a game that cost me $45 and took the efforts of a sizeable development team years to make I've become far to fond of ignoring all that effort in favour of just pushing people over.

Just going to a subway station and pushing people down the stairs or down by the docks, knocking people into the water and when they try to climb out . . step on thier heads. Sick but amazingly theraputic.

I finally got to a point with Mario Kart Wii that I'm making some progress. I had to give Okami a break because all of the ridiculous side-quests are annoying me. I'm in love with one of the most interesting games I've seen in years - The World Ends With You. Good job, SquareEnix - see all the good that comes of trying something new? Also, Speed Racer DS is incredible. It's the love child of F-Zero and Burnout. God stuff.

I'm also mentally preparing myself for June and the deluge of DS games that entails.

I'm going to be original and say Blast Corps. Yeah I know it's an old N64 game... but it's amazing and it's been too long since I've beaten it. So there you have it.

I beat GTA IV a couple days ago... but I can't say I'm done with it yet.

I just got a VGA adapter for my dreamcast to hook into my video projector. So that has reinvigotated me on the system. I've been playing Typing of the Dead and every Capcom fighting game known to man (and maybe now I'll finally get aroung to beating Resident Evil: Code Veronica after all there years).

And I just started on Splatterhouse for Cowzilla's Educate Yourself thing tonight... One of my brothers came over Friday so I hooked up my Xbox and we played some Warriors, mainly Armies of the Night and then just screwing around Coney Island 'til I fell asleep, controller in hand...

I've been playing the charming Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga on 360, and I'm loving it so far, since it's basically a game for OCD people who want to smash everything in the game and collect every doohickey. Other than that, I've moved on from GTA III to Vice City and am enjoying myself much more.

Oh, and moving back home from college, that was fun.

Finished Sonic Rush the other day THANK GOD, stuck in the end of Feel the Magic where you go through all three boss battles in one sitting, and completely hopelessly addicted to The World Ends With You. I'm surprised there hasn't been a Dtoid review for it yet.

Also got Ikaruga finally and can sort of make it to level 4 on easy with continues, and just today dived back into Metroid Prime 2. Man, too much on my plate...

GTA4,and God help me, Scrabulous on Facebook.

I finally took my humongous jar of coins down to the bank, and got nearly $200 bucks back. So I finally bought Brawl and Arcana Heart. Both are excellent.

Thanks to the PS3 FNF crew, I'm practicing Tekken again also. I love kicking rocket-powered sumo wrestlers in the junk with Nina.

What's this GTA4 thing everyone keeps talking about?

I've been going back to give my Wii some loving which it doesn't really need. Mario Kart Wii has been my main game this week and I finally picked up NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams for £10 in a sale so I'm playing that slowly. Gave my 360 some love yesterday with about 30 minutes of CoD4 online before bouncing back to Mario Kart.

Replay wise I'm back on Ocarina of Time for yet another playthrough, its still my favourite game of all time regardless of Linde's communist ways and I'm also back to the Trackmania United Forever to do battle with some of the Red and Black tracks.

Lots of online Mario Kart Wii matches. Popped in Tetris Attack so I could restrain myself from purchasing Pokemon Puzzle League.

Oh, and that one thing everyone else is playing, that too.

Well, I finally did not buy a not R4 so I've not been playing Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, Taiko Drum 1 & 2 and Bleach DS 2. I also got to not play Dokidoki Majo Shinpan and all I have to say about that game is that if it's supposed to simulate touching little girls, the pedophiles must lead boring lives. Thank God I never decide to spend $50 on that shitty game.

On the not not DS side of things, I've been playing GTA 4 when my 360 doesn't sound like its about to explode. It seems to have every problem EXCEPT for RRoD. Actually, I wish it would RRoD, that way MS will fix it for free.

I just finished watching Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Its been a while since I had seen such a smart and bizarre style of comedy. Loved it, I'm crossing my fingers for a third season.

Boom Blox, which I'm going to keep saying is awesome until more people check it out. I also picked up the Harvey Birdman game since it's been marked down to $20, and it's a fun Phoenix Wright clone. Worth picking up if you're a fan of the show.

PS: Your Skeletor comics were win Jim.

I just recently downloaded the demo for Noitu Love 2(oooh, my next paycheck is already evaporating). I'm in a bit of a quandary, I recently purchased Team Fortress 2 for the PC, but did not realize that the price of The Orange Box had dropped so low, so I gotta look over the return policy(unopened, shouldn't be a problem, right?) to ship it back and wait nervously for Fry's to open tomorrow. I'll while the time away continuing in Half Life 2.

Is Destructoid really broken right now? I've been playing Mario Kart Wii and getting back into some Shadowrun on the 360. For whatever reason, Shadowrun is the FPS that I keep wanting to go back to. I've also been playing some Genesis games as part of a project. That's right... no GTA for me.

I'm registered over at Morphine Nation. I don't ever post anything, but I like to stop by and read the nonsense that goes on in the forums. I also look forward to Jim's reminders when electric retard is updated.

The Operation Darkness demo was crazy hard...it first starts you off against a few foot soldiers...which is fine after getting used to the camera and attack postioning...but then a group of 10 or so soldiers comes out and you think well fine I can handle them. Then the tanks come out. So I need to buckle down and figure out how to beat that before I purchase the game.

Other than that its been Virtua Fighter 5, Forza 2, Castlevania SotN (XBLA) and I turned my wii on to download that free channel. Oh I did try out Dino Run as well.

I got GTAIV the day it came out so of course I've been playing a hacked version of FF1 NES... what? Oh and Double Dragon Advance. My GBA sees more game time than any other system. (It'd see even more if Nintendo hadn't been fucktards with their decision on Mother 1+2 GBA). PSP is the closest contender to that title.
