Games of the week for 05/10/09: Ray Peacock edition photo

I am very late to the game, but I recently discovered the Ray Peacock Podcast thanks to community member Half Left. It kept me entertained on a boring flight to LA and I have to say that it's the funniest bloody thing I've heard in a long time. The show is basically Ray Peacock and Ed Gamble, a pair of comedians, bullying and mocking ex-Eastenders star Raji James with a complete lack of compassion. It is brilliant.

I recommend you check it out here. Also, hit the jump for a video of the show in action. Speaking of hitting the jump, you can also view our games of the week. Do let us know what you have been playing as well, because we are proper interested, thanks!

Topher: Siren: Blood Curse is a pathetic excuse for a horror game, and serves only to uphold the archaic idea that a shit camera and janky controls equals "scary." On the rare occasions when my character isn't stading directly in the way of what I'm trying to look at, the screen is otherwise obscured by either a block of obnoxious white text telling me exactly what to do in order to solve the game's puzzles, or some class of prompt to shake the fucking controller when a button press would do just fine.

It also isn't very conducive to "survival horror" when I have no desire to see any of the playable characters survive. They're douchenozzles. I wouldn't actually mind if they were torn to ribbons by zombies. If you can't get through a bamboo fence when you've got a sledgehammer in your hands, why should I help you? You deserve to get your face eaten, and I'll just escort the adorable cursed Japanese girl to the next town without you. Douche. The game's not scary, it's just irritating. Is it so much to ask that a horror game be scary instead of just broken?

I have also been playing Ape Quest for PSP, which is absolutely delightful and completely makes up for the other crappy thing I just talked about.

Bennett: I hate Siren too, Topher. Anyway, this week for me has been mostly Plants vs. Zombies -- I'm still completely addicted a full week after finishing the game and my review. Got a little bit of Resident Evil 5 in too -- we're almost finished!

Chester: My 360 shit the bed earlier this week while I was trying my hardest to play Mass Effect. So I have not -- as many people would expect -- been playing Rock Band 2 all week. But here's what I did play: Guitar Hero Smash Hits; Lumines on both the PSP and PSN; the inFamous demo that I liked way more than the early press demos; Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars; and Plants vs. Zombies.

I also started to play Beyond Good & Evil, a game I've played the first 15% of twice... but never made it any further. I forgot how amazing that first 15% was, and intend on seeing it to the end this time. And yes, this has everything to do with that supposedly leaked Beyond Good & Evil 2 footage. God damn that looks hot.

Razak: 15 percent! For shame! It's especially upsetting because at 16 percent is the part that gets you so hooked that you can't stop playing. You were only one percent away!

I've been tearing through Wolverine for most of the weekend. It's a blast, though slightly repetitive so far. I'm hoping for a few more interesting large monsters to battle, but we'll see. The lunge attack is made of epic win though, despite it sometimes making the game a bit to easy. I'm not sure there is much that is more fun then lunging at a guy, plunging my claws into him, standing up and jumping to the other side of the level to kill another guy. Brilliant.

Also still playing Bond on DS. You know what, Wolverine isn't repetitive at all. I'm pretty sure Bond is going to be the same thing for the next however many levels it is. I must trudge on though.

Aziz: So how does Wolverine get killed in the game?

Razak: Well I believe the logic is, and I think it works like this in the ocmics too. If he gets torn up enough, there isn't anything to regenerate. So you've got your outer layer which is like yoru shield and once that is ogne your internal organs start getting deadified. Once those are gone, your dead, but everything regenerates eventually, which is pretty fucking cool to watch.

Sarkar: Well, that was a clusterfuck of typos.

Grim: Finally beat Plants vs. Zombies, and now I'm trying to win the last few mini-games while harvesting my zen garden for mad diamond loot. As for Silent Hill: Homecoming, I'm starting to like it less and less the more I play for some reason, but I am not one to give up on a game easily. Finally there's Patapon 2, which was an absolute blast until I got the the boss with a hammer that can kill half of my army in one hit. Utter bullshit, I'd say. Looks like I have a few more hours of grinding ahead of me. Hooray.

Holmes: Recently, Wolverine got all his flesh melted off in a fire. Only his metal skeleton remained. From there, he went to the afterlife and talked with sexy chicks, while his brain and major organs slowly regenerated from scratch. With in a day or so, he completely regrew himself.

It was all kinds of ridiculous.

As for videogames, played through the Klonoa remake for review. I'd never played a Klonoa game before, but now I want to play them all. The series definitely has something special going for it, despite looking fairly generic from afar. I'm also playing the Donkey Kong Jungle Beat remake for review. The game has a ton of new stuff, including Donkey Kong Country-style rocket barrels, new enemies, new obstacles, a whole new life meter system,  a new crest earning system, and the occasional smattering of new graphics.

If the main thing you liked about the original was the bongo-gameplay, then you probably wont be a fan of this game, as it's sole reason for existence is to give you the chance to play the game with less motion controls (the first for a Wii port). Everyone else who likes 2D platformers should buy it post-haste. I liked the original a lot, but I think this remake is just a hair more enjoyable.

Crap, I just sort of reviewed the game right there, didn't I? Ah well, expect a longer, more unnecessarily wordy review in a few days.

Sterling: Haha Tron, that's why I won't get into comic books. They jumped the shark long ago. So many retcons and so much bullshit. This is the price you pay in any long-running serial. I wish American TV shows would realize this is why British sitcoms only last a few short seasons.

As far as gaming, it's been more Velvet Assassin, which is still fucking horrendous, although it's gotten a little less horrendous after the third chapter. I've also been playing the usual rounds of Killzone 2, although matches lately have been really laggy. While on a trip to LA I had tried to get back into Dragon Quest IV, as I'm only at the second chapter and had no clue where to go. Apparently I still have no clue where to go because I spent ages running around doing nothing. Anybody know what to do where you're at the bit with the tower with the locked door, and the guy who won't let you go to Endor through the portal because the stupid pussy King said you couldn't go there?

Also, UFC 2009 Ultimate for preview. I'm embargoed until tomorrow so I can't really talk about that, but I did get to see some dude called Rampage from the UFC and he came into the room to play a bit of the game and say sexist things. Fun times!

Concelmo: I played through Killzone 2 and ... meh. Not to shrug it off that easily (I mean no disrespect, Sony), but something about the game felt so generic to me. Sure, it was beautiful to look at (ZOMG REFINERY LEVEL!), but everything about the game screamed "cookie cutter." I didn't even get to fight a gigantic, super unrealistic boss like in Resistence 2!

After that, I dived into Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for the Nintendo DS as all was better in the world. I have said it before and I will say it again: the Fire Emblem series is one of the greatest videogame series EVER!

Sterling: Chad, try the multiplayer on KZ2, that's where it really shines.

Razak: So the trick is to type so poorly there is no possibly way Samit could correct it all. This I can do.

Samit corrects my entire clusterfuck of typos in 3...2...

Sarkar: Now that I have a semi-competent gaming laptop (i.e., one that doesn't shrivel up at the mere mention of a Flash game), I spent some time this past week with demos downloaded from Steam. The Braid demo was fantastic, as was the World of Goo demo; I'll probably buy both games as soon as I get my next paycheck. Demos that I've downloaded but haven't yet tried include Psychonauts, The Maw, and Plants vs. Zombies.

I also played a few PSN demos. X-Men Origins: Wolverine was brainless fun; I can see why Jim liked it so much. Who knows -- maybe I'll pick it up if I see it in a bargain bin somewhere down the line. The Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 demo is stupid because it only allows you to play local multiplayer; my brother's not home from college yet, so sending Hadoukens at a stationary second player got old really quickly. Even so, I doubt I'll be buying the full game for $15 -- I'm holding out for an "HD Remix" version.

Finally, I got a code for the inFamous demo, which I enjoyed so much that I played through it twice -- in a row. It's much better than the pre-alpha build I played during New York Comic Con; Sucker Punch absolutely nailed the free running/climbing aspects of the game, and the combat is intuitive but challenging enough to keep you on your toes, always thinking about how to best take down your enemy. I'm really looking forward to the game's May 26th release now.

I now have a shiny R4 card (with a 8GB micro SD HC card) and therefore been downloaing amazing DS games like mad. In fact, because of the awesomeness of the DS lite, I hardly touch my PS3 at all now. This coming from a major, massive PS lover.

I won't list the 40 odd games I have played, but I'll mention two that stuck out as simply fantastic, IMHO.

Phoenix Wright. Brilliant game, the story, the writing and the characters are all so memorable, I find myself glued to DS screen seeing, reading and loving every twist and turn the story has. We need more games like this, it's a mighty blst of fresh gaming air for me. I was getting sick and tired of killing stuff on my PS3.

Sonic Rush: A shining exapmle why we simply don't need a sonic game with a story, tons of useless, terrible characters, and even full 3D graphics. It does what the legendary sega Megadrive games do so well, make the levels blissfully fun to play. On top of that, the game has a fantastic sense of speed and the graphics are great, the 3D/2D style is brilliant to see in motion. Hell, the gameplay itself is top notch, emulating the old sonic games perfectly.

For GOD'S sake Sega, do a HD PSN/XBLA port, I'm sure it will sell like mad. Not only that, I'm sure it will re-ignite the love for sonic many, many people have. The terrible current gen games have killed that love and now we have a iconic character who is fast losing his popularity.

Good, even great sonic games haven't died, they just went portable. :)

I've been going through Mass Effect as well. I played Broken Steel too, but the achievements for the last two missions glitched and I saved over after completing them both, so I am going to have to play through the entire main quest again to get them. Gives me an excuse to go for the karma achievements I missed though, so... silver lining?

Started playing Odin Sphere finally, had it on my shelf for quite a while. I love it, everyone with a PS2 needs this game. Also, I played about 6 hours of SSBB at a friends, just me and 2 other guys playing 10 stock matches, team and FFA. It doesn't control as well as melee, but the stages are much better than melee's. Pictochat and the Warioware one are all kinds of craziness. When you find yourself playing local multiplayer of a year old game, you just know you're going to be playing it next year as well.

I finished Bioshock last week, finally. Kind of a disappointing ending to an otherwise awesome game, but it didn't bother me too much, as the rest of the game was so good. I started Retro Game Challenge and have found it hard to put down. I'm at Guadia Quest now. I love all of the games in it so much! Also working on RE4: Wii Edition, should have that done within the week. I'm at the part where you play as Ashley (with no weapons), and I am freaking out. Finally, a little survival to go with the horror!

I'm still blasting away with DWStrikeforce. I'm looking forward to getting Warriors Orochi 2 PSP in English soon, so yay for that.

I downloaded the PvZ demo but yet to play it (oh noes, timer!), but I think I have a ton of demos on Steam I've yet to play...

I got my Mom Peggle Nights for Mother's Day and she's yet to install it. So I'll be doing that tomorrow I'm sure. Dad's already looking to steal it from her. D:

@Mushman: Try Sonic Rush Adventure too, its sequel. It doesn't have the funky Jet Grind Radio-esque soundtrack, but it's still got that 2D gameplay going on.

@Doomsday Forte.

I didn't know it had a sequel!! That's great news, though I am a little saddended to find out that it doesn't have the awesome music of the first one.
I forgot to mention how great the music of Sonic Rush is, you find yourself constantly tapping your feet to the music. :)

Thanks for the heads up!!

Aaaaand the Ashley section is done. Turns out it's not as long as I thought, and once you get to the sliding tile puzzle, it's not so much scary as "hope I can do the right QTE." Still a great game.

Me and some friends all bought Defence Grid from Steam and I really like it despite my usual unlike for tower defense games.

I've been earning Killzone 2 trophies on Easy, which is fun I guess. I also hit up the multiplayer and earned the Revolver after a few hours. God damn that thing is powerful. I earned a high enough rank to be a Sniper now too and I probably would never play a Sniper if I didn't have that hand cannon to go with it. Sabatour is wicked fun too.

In light of the announcement of the Gears of War 2 mega DLC pack I've booted up the Xbox 360, and I'm sure it coughed some dust when I did. It's fun, but really not (as said per my latest blog /pimp). I'll still end up getting the DLC pack tho.

Oh, right. I'm also playing my new DSi and fully enjoying Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Saga Long Name is Long. It's hilarious and the combat is FUN.

I beat Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia around Tuesdayish, but for whatever reason I STILL can't put the game down, even with a 100% completion rating already obtained. Which is sad, because I have an unopened copy of Pokemon Platinum calling out to me. What is it with Castlevania games and the obsession with just wrecking shit as an uberpowerful god among insects after you beat the game?

Oh, and, as per usual, the majority of my gaming time this week was spent playing Rock Band 2, save for two hours of achievement unlocking for my boss today via Rock Revolution and GH: Metallica.

The main reason why I haven't got Sonic Rush Adventure yet was because Hideki Naganuma didn't do the music. But I did see it for $20 at Walmart the other day and Sega does need to get it through their thick skulls that Sonic belongs in 2D so a purchase may be in order.

I've made it my mission this week to get my first Platinum trophy. While I was originally planning on getting it in Uncharted since all I need is 2 treasures and complete the hardest difficulty, the game is making me want to snap the disc in half. I'm probably closer to getting it in Burnout anyways but I was seriously trying to avoid that addiction at all costs.

@ Gator- Wait until you play the final game.

I realize now that the reason I couldn't get into Legend of Kage 2 is because the final game in RGC is the same type of game, just so much more awesome.

As soon as I'm done with all this posts I have half finished and the E3 dust has finally settles, I'm definitely importing RGC2 and reviewing it. From what I've read it's got most of RGC1's games, plus about ten more.

AMAZING

I finally went back and finished up the last little bit of the Fallout 3 main quest line this week (I've had a serious case of end-game syndrome with that game since, like, November), and am now trying to decide if I should get the broken steel dlc. Also, I spent some time finishing up my season in Tecmo Bowl Kickoff, which marks probably the first time I've actually done a full "season" mode in a sports game since the old NHL games for the SNES.

Other than that, I've dabbled in some Street Fighter IV and Super Robot Taisen OGSEF.

I played a bit of Silent Hill 2 and Radiant Dawn, but once I hit the end-game portion, Chrono Trigger became a full-time obsession.

For crying out loud, I'm playing New Game+. I never play New Game+ when it's offered.

Unemployment has it's benefits. No one posts good jobs on Mondays or Fridays, so it's like getting a 3 day work week.

My week this week will consist of playing Dead Space (which I got on the cheap at Target), more GTAIV, and Broken Steel. I think there's some opportunities for some L4D in there somewhere, but I dunno. Depends.

Oh, and loads of Rhythm Tengoku, Planet Puzzle League, and Big Bang Mini.

Well since picking up my VGA Box the week before, I finally plucked up the courage to go through the Ashley crank section of RE4 which pisses me off to no end but I beat it. I also completed The Bourne Conspiracy, which is surprisingly quite fun if repetitive and generic. Good bargain title though which is what I got it as. I played the Bionic Commando MP Demo too, which was really awesome although it shows signs of being repetitive. Apart from that, I got a 360 flatspin on Burnout Paradise after about 20-30 tries and have been working on getting the Elite License.

Jim, I'm assuming you have gone to the first town after the castle and fought the dudes who were taking the townswomen. After that keep heading east and south. You will get to the town of Vrenor where you will be prompted for a quest that will give you the thiefs key, which will unlock the doors in that tower. Going to Endor is the last thing you will do.

If that doesn't work and/or you passed that, head to the baazar and see if you find a guard yelling at you to go back to the castle.

Does that help?

-Animal Crossing: City Folk as always. I now have a fountain and will get a windmill shortly.
-Mother 3: Fun, I need to grind a bit since I avoided enemies for a little while. In the thick of things in Chapter 7.
-Space Invaders Extreme: Played a fair bit, having trouble getting past 4-B. Still a brilliant reworking of the basic gameplay.

Most of the week was working my last shifts as an ID checker in a dorm for the semester, packing up my ridiculous amount of things, and heading home, so there wasn't much time for gaming. However, I did manage to play a little Kingdom Hearts 2 and sneak some Pokemon LeafGreen in while on the job. Mainly, I just watched a lot of Kino's Journey, Baccano!, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, No Country for Old Men, Slumdog Millionare, and Zombie Strippers.

Taking a break from Retro Game Challenge. I'm at the point where the last thing I need to do is beat Guadia Quest, and I'm trying to stave off the temptation to do the "easy-out" ending. Instead, I've been playing some Play-on-Wii Pikmin, and Final Fantasy IV Advance. So I took a break from one handheld RPG to play another handheld RPG...

I just went on a Gameboy shopping spree on Amazon, so I'm eagerly awaiting those to show up at my door :)

My gf randomly bought Dead Rising and Bully: Scholarship Edition for me so I played a bit of DR and a lot of Bully. Rockstar really knows how to make a good sandbox game. Bully has totally surpassed my expectations (which were pretty low to be honest) and I can't get enough of it. Dead Rising is good but it's hard to get into. I'm just using my first play through to fuck around, kill zombies and level up, so it's going kind of slow. I also took Pokemon Diamond out for the first time in over a year. I beat the 4th gym leader way back when and put the game down out of boredom. The news of HG and SS coming out made me wanna play again.

I forgot about Project Justice, which I finally had resurfaced so now it only freezes every 10th time instead of every time I try to play. eBay is a great source but I've ended up with a few scratched discs. Anyway, Project Justice is pretty cool, I love the characters. Basing the different fighting styles on the sport or school club to which a character belongs is a nice way of mixing up the typical variety of martial arts styles seen in most fighting games.
