Games of the Week for 04/20/08: What DC Comics didn't want you to see edition photo

Midway may have bowed to DC Comics, but we at Destructoid don't have to. While Ed Boon and the gang set about neutering their videogame to appease a bunch of killjoys who don't want their precious Batman getting pretend-killed, I have taken it upon myself to restore order.. Behold the image that the comic book industry would not let us have! Gaze upon its wonder and be stricken with madness, for to look upon such insanity is insanity itself.

In between poorly crafted pictures, I played some games this week, and so did my colleagues. Hit the jump for our evidence.

BATMAN'S HEAD IS BEING HELD BY SUB ZERO IN THAT IMAGE! THE WORLD ENDS WITH BATMAN'S HEAD!

Nick: Haven't had much time to sit down and play games for "pleasure," which is not to say I haven't had a chance to enjoy some in short bursts. Of course, I spent some time with the games at Midway's Gamers' Day --Wheelman, TNA Impact, This Is Vegas, NBA Ballers: Chosen One. At home, I've been trying to get through the six levels of the Ninja Gaiden II preview build, and this weekend I just started playing (for review) Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys, which so far as been a genuinely funny, inventive little platformer.

This coming week, though, I will start rocking Operation: Darkness (Nazi werewolves FTW!) and I will become Judas Priest with the first downloadable full record on Rock Band.

Dale: Even though I just finished up reviews for Arcana Heart and Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds, I'm continuing to play them both. They're that fun. I'm taking my sweet ass time with Crisis Core, and it gets better with every session. And, coming out of left field, I'm re-playing Tail Concerto (PSOne).

Colette: Working on a slow collection of all of the side quest items at the end of Lost Odyssey and enjoying some vintage goodness like Metal Gear, Snake's Revenge, Uninvited and Sanriotown, the latter which I played at 1 am last night drunk with exhaustion.

Gameboi: I've managed to squeeze in some time with Batman Begins, as well as a 2-day joyride (anyone miss me on the front page?) with Gran Turismo Prologue. Other than that, it's been the usual fare: online fun with CoD 4, UTIII, and a smidgen of Warhawk. I also spent the past few days trying to get my damn 9-digit MGO code to work. Thanks to one of our Dtoiders, I was able to talk to an actual person *GASP* and trade my busted code for a working one. Believe it or not, I spent all day yesterday downloading the beta, and about 70% of the "update." I sure hope it was worth the trouble. I already know what you are thinking: It's a beta dumbass..... it's going to be broken. Judging by the experience thus far, that's a fair assumption.

Hamza: I played some Battlefield: Bad Company the other day. I can't talk about it yet, but I can say that I won some Swedish chocolate for stabbing people. STAB STAB STAB.

Grim: I went a little eBay crazy this week and ended up getting a bunch of retro games: A Link to the Past, Knights of the Round, Alien vs. Predator, Super Star Wars, and Legendary Wings. Dear God, I forgot how f***ing hard these games are. On PC it's been mostly TrackMania Nations Forever and Fallout 2.

Jim: Still battling through some Viking: Battle for Asgard but it has been thoroughly replaced by my recent purchase of God of War: Chains of Olympus. The enemies seem way cheaper than in the original game, but you have a few abusive moves of your own so I guess things are more or less even. Doesn't do much new -- it's just God of War on the go, but that is not a bad thing by a long shot.

Chad: I don't want to ruin anything, but there is a sequence at the end of the first disc of Lost Odyssey that made me ball for 45 minutes. I timed it. It was ridiculous. Like, projectile tears. Wow.

Also, Ikaruga!

Husky: NHL 08, NHL 08, NHL 08, and NHL 08... It's sad that when hockey playoffs come around the only disk that makes it into my 360 is an NHL one, but hey... when you're in the same room as a bunch of other hockey fans during intermission what the hell else are you supposed to do? Cuddle?

Dyson: Haven't had much of a chance to play anything at all, really. The most time I've spent this week has been on the original Metal Gear for the NES, and that's about it. I'm staring at the copy of The Orange Box that Anthony bought me, wondering if TF2 is a game worth trying out. Most likely, I'll just keep playing Galaga on Live instead.

Orcist: As the usual for the past month, I haven't been playing much. Trying to pass my junior year of college is for the f*ckin' birds, dudes. Anyway, a little BioShock, some Phantom Hourglass, and that's about it.

Samit: I had two tests this past week, so I didn't really have much time at all for gaming. Of course, I made time for Warhawk on Wednesday night, but other than that, I haven't played much of anything on my PS3. However, I headed out to New York Comic Con yesterday and today (along with a bunch of Dtoiders), and there were a crapload of video games there.

I got some hands-on time with: the (rather underwhelming) Metal Gear Online beta; an awesomely bad, straight-out-of-1998 shooter called Target: Terror (think Time Crisis in the arcades, but with the Wii Zapper); and an addictive XBLA puzzle game called Roogoo. The Iron Man game and Civilization Revolution (both on 360) were there as well, but I didn't get a chance to play them.

Also, Orcist, I feel you on the whole junior year thing. The next four weeks are going to suck.

And what about YOU sacks of pus? What have YOU been playing, eh? EH!?

I haven't been playing anything too much. Trying to finish Subspace Emissary on SSBB. Starting to replay Twilight Princess but I'm not sure how well that's going to go.

I think that picture is the bee's knees. It perfectly encapsulates the point I was trying for in my blog

I've been playing all of the old-school Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games for the past week or so.

I've been playing a little of everything, some Ikaruga, some Iron man demo. Also Dyson, if you're curious about TF2, I can help you get into it, or at least try it out. ill be sure to send you a friend invite sometime soon.

Still lots and lots of Ikaruga. Some Donkey Kong Country 2 as well.

A little bit of everything for me. Fallout, Titan Quest, Team Fortress 2, GTA: Vice City, Battle for Wesnoth, Trackmania Nations, and maybe I'll get around to finishing KOTOR.

playing COD4, a bit of warhawk, the usual,

Samit- can you post or let me know any impressions you had of the beta? It's disappointing to hear you say that you were under whelmed by what you played at the comic con.

311, if you are a fan of the Subsistence's online mode, you will most likely enjoy it. The controls are just as difficult to get into as before.

Ironically, the first time Samit played it, he ended up as the MVP of the round.

BA-HAHAHA! I read that he "balled" (I assume he meant bawl!) and pictured exactly that. Stopping in the middle of the game to get a mad b-ball session on. Well played, Aerox.

I've been playing Lost Odyssey (final disc, just leveling up as much as possible right now before I finish it), Command and Conquer 3, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, DMC4 & Mass Effect (both of them on and off, just need to finish Mass Effect on the hardest difficulty and DMC4 on the unlocked difficulties).

Once I finish the GDI campaign on C&C3 I think I will finish Lost Odyssey, then I can finish up Mass Effect for like the 11th time and I might even hop back on Bioshock to finish it on the hardest setting without dying (for the achievement of course :D).

Oh also, *stabs Ed Boon*

I haven't purchased a new game in I can't even remember how long. I think Pokemon: Pearl Version is my latest purchase, earlier in the year, like January or Febuary.

I'm just going to continue my playthrough of Odin sphere, and then play Rock Band some more.

@311grassr00ts: To be honest, I only played two quick team deathmatch games — that is, I didn’t spend enough time with it to really be able to post a piece with my impressions. But from those two games, my first impressions were, as I said, underwhelming. I’ve never played any of the other MGS games, so most people would consider my views invalid anyway.

My main issue with it was the speed that the game moved at. I understand that Snake doesn’t run or whatnot, so it’s supposed to be slow, but after playing the hell out of CoD 4, it’s quite a jarring disconnect.

Also, they threw us right into the action, so I’m sure that if I had time to properly find out what the controls are and acclimate myself to them, I’d have enjoyed myself a bit more. I mean, there’s a lot in the way of controls. Apparently, you can use stealth and all kinds of other stuff (like melee moves) that I didn’t know about while I was playing it.

Finished up Ninja Gaiden DS & Bully, played through the King Kong movie game, and I'm a good way into Cubivore currently. My brother gave me his old copy of Ikaruga on the GC, but I haven't popped that in for fear of the epic asskicking that game will give me until I get my shump reflexes back.

Nothing too special. I've mostly been playing various free games. TrackMania, a Geometry Wars clone, assorted Flash games, Agent Moo's AMMO. That's about it, more or less.

To be honest, the frustration of not having any remotely new games is really starting to eat at me. I just bought Team Fortress 2 for the PC, but apparently my computer refuses to run the damn thing. Couple that with the seemingly endless unemployment-related stress and frustration, and... I've been a bit of a mess lately. This probably sounds really stupid, but please keep me in your thoughts. Everything's just really, really ugly right now. I'm really worn thin at this point, overall. I just hope Valve can help solve the problem, because I could really use the relief of a little TF2 on FNF.

MEDIIIIICCCCC!

As finals are now completed, I can now finish Chrono Trigger. In a bout of sheer will power, I pulled myself away from my SNES and managed to get in a few rounds of CoD4 as well as start the MGS Saga, starting all the way back with MGS 1.

I've been fairly busy, but at least most of my time has been going towards gaming. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night was spent trying to make it through as many gigs as I could finish in Rock Band's World Tour mode. Other than that, I just beat Halo 3 tonight, so that's something.

The downside of that is that I've barely been on Dtoid. I've been catching up on news in extremely large chunks, but I still feel disconnected from people. Hopefully this whole "college semester" thing will be over soon, and I can spend more time on Dtoid.

Playing RSV:2 and CoD4 in regular rotation online, but in the downtime it's been all FFIII on NDS and Earthbound via emulation. I play Earthbound probably once a year, so I guess it's that time of year - I love that damn game.

Nice to see so many people going back and playing all the Metal Gear games - they're really awesome, all the way back to NES days.

Well, Waiting impatiently for GTAIV to come out (so quick how I go from meh to ZOMG), I've been playing anything that can keep me sustained. Halo 3, Ikaruga, Castlevania:SotN, Mario Kart DS, Front Mission DS, Trackmania nations, fired up the old PS1 for some Vagrant Story, a buddy of mine picked up a 3DO so I was playing, or at least trying to play some games on that, most notably Alone in the Dark and Way of the Warrior. Oh yeah, I found out that one of my favorite F2P MMOs, Space Cowboy Online is back up and running under the name of AirRivals, so I got the client for that. Also, Solitare on my T-Mobile Wing. But for now, sleep.

Somehow all the games I requested from Goozex has arrived or in the mail so thats cool but a little overwhelming. Either way right now its Phantom Dust for the XBOX, and I got to say I really enjoy it. Also Crimson Tears, a great beat'em up from what I've played so far.
