Games of the Week for 03/09/08: Smashing your Brawls edition photo

Yeah yeah, blah blah, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. You think I'm impressed? You think I care? So you're American, you get to make Pikachu electrify Sonic the Hedgehog, big deal. In Britain, we get Peep Show, so we're the real winners here. Yes ... the real winners.

Yes, Sunday's almost a distant memory, and thank Christ, because it means the beginning of the end for the ridiculous, Nintendo-cultivated Smash hype that has been on my Internet for far too long. With that crossed off our calanders, we can start building up unrealistic expectations for Grand Theft Auto IV. I can't wait!

Once again, we played videogames this week. You may hit the jump to see the eyewitness accounts of such things being done.

[Disclaimer: Yes, I realize that my writing about Smash Bros. does little more than feed the very beast I complained about. I'm also aware that I am a Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft hater (delete as applicable) and I only complain about the subject matter to fulfill a sinister agenda. It is recognized that I like Dynasty Warriors and this disqualifies me from having a valid opinion on videogames. I am fat as well, which has the same effect. For all other inquiries, you may strap a sheet of security glass to your face and head butt a horse. Thank you.]

Topher: Seiken Densetsu 2 on SNES, Space Invaders Extreme on DS, Ikaruga, then an unexpected round of Holy shit my Dreamcast stopped reading discs, crack it open and spend an hour fixing it, followed by more Ikaruga.

Samit: Aside from suffering through MLB 2K8 (review forthcoming), I did the WNW thing with the PS3 gang, as usual. I also played [and surprisingly sucked at] CoD 4 on FNF, which had a new wrinkle: Rock Band. It was tons o' fun, except for my Strat's sticky blue button and finicky strum bar. EA's going to be getting a present in the mail from me pretty soon...

Niero: I'm playing No Sleep IV: Shut up and fix IE bugs Gaiden and started a Phantasy Star 2 code on the Wii.  I have a few long plane rides this week in which I will attempt to finish Professor Layton or drink myself into a coma.

Gameboi: When not getting my ass handed to me in Warhawk, I've been traversing through the foggy land known as Silent Hill, looking for something called an Origin. Before this, I had a few hours worth of  "guess why my PS3 suddenly can't communicate with my router anymore."  I almost lost that game, but somehow came out on top -- with a new high score!

DMV: Some Disgaea, Gaijin Spotter 2008, and The Case of the Disappearing Cash in Japan, all while being doused with "lucky fire" at Nara.

Colette: Lost Odyssey (disc 4 makes me want to stab children, in a good way) and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. I have a fourteen hour plane ride tomorrow, so next week this list may be quite a bit longer.

Dale: More and more Culdcept Saga, a bit less Super Mario Galaxy, and absolutely no Brawl.

Chad: Jim Sterling is crazy. Mass Effect is awesome. Especially the final two hours. That sequence is ... oh wait, shoot, Jim is posting this for me in a few hours. Er ... did I mention that Jim Sterling is also ridiculously handsome and one of the most intelligent people I have ever had  the pleasure of associating myself with? :)

Also, Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol is the tits.

Also (also!), OMG SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL ALL NIGHT LONG! NO SLEEP! ZOMG!

Jim: Chad is wrong about everything except the handsome part. Also, I have been OD'ing on PSP this week, especially as it gets me through a work shift. Selections this week have included Gitaroo Man Lives, Metal Gear Ac!d 2, Dead Head Fred and the frustrating Patapon

Grim: I finally got Rock Band and it's just as amazing as I expected it to be. I seriously can't put this damn game down.

Nick: This week I've spent a lot of very short time with a few games, and instead of trying to say something clever, I will just list them: I fucked a minotaur up in Legendary (Xbox 360);  Pirates vs. Ninja Dodgeball with my wife, and we're desperately trying to unlock the zombies (XBLA); Insecticide for review (Nintendo DS); Arkadian Warriors (XBLA) is unfortunately pretty rotten; Hail to the Chimp (Xbox 360) with roller girls yelling "Fuck 'em up!" in my ear; and Schizoid (XBLA). I should be playing some PS3 or Wii games.

Also, Rock Band. Still. One game I will not be playing this week, or any other week, regardless of how great everyone says it is -- Super Smash Bros. Melee. I don't like fun, I guess.

Dyson: Contrary to, but not in defiance to Nick's inability to enjoy games that are fun, I am playing Brawl (even though he refers to it as Melee). I have also finished Professor Layton, a game that I feel is enjoyable beyond compare and should be bought by every DS owner out there. Seriously, just to make sure they release the sequels in the States, please make sure to purchase the game. Do not NOT download this one, trust me ;)

I also I agree with Chad, Jim Sterling is crazy and handsome. Mostly crazy, though, because Mass Effect is a remarkable game and should be treated as such.

Nick: If I had a dollar for every time I accidentally referred to Brawl as Melee, I might actually considering buying a copy of Brawl.

Dyson: Shit, you could probably buy a Japanese Wii with the money you'd make.

Nick: Well, isn't Brawl just two copies of Melee duct-taped together? Speaking of which, I've been meaning to actually tape two copies of Melee together for a photo-op, and now that Brawl is actually out, I feel like I lost my chance. Damn it.

Dyson: It's okay. You would have been the only one to laugh at it, so there's no loss in not getting it done.

Nick: I suggest you go back to playing your silly children's games now.

Dyson: As long as you promise to go back to playing your PS2 games on your PS3, since that's the only thing the system is currently good for :)

Meta Knight FTW!

Nick: I already play a lot of PS2 games on my PS3. :(

Dyson: Aww :(

Topher: I use mine to watch movies and look at pictures on the internet! :D

Yep.

So what'd you guys do this week?

perfect dark zero was in a bin for $5 so me and my brother played it co-op. and our wii hasn't been off all day, we've been alternating between single player, multiplayer, co-op story and online (with no lag) and some single player event matches when one of us wanted to eat or watch the suns beat the spurs so the lakers can stay in first place in the west :)

also it nice to have a marathon gaming session and not have to worry about your console dying

Rock Band, Burnout Paradise demo (wut?...), Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Endless Ocean, Animal Crossing: WW.

Buckling to Valve's demands that I sign up for Steam to play 5games1box, which I've been sitting on since Christmas.

You can find Peep Show on Youtube now a days, mind you. Well, at least before it's systematically hunted down and crushed by the Youtube secret police. I also found season one at a mall in Dearborn, so it's not THAT exclusive to you guys anymore...

...and my plan to kidnap those two geniuses has yet to be enacted.

I had to play the Wii version of that game before I could play Brawl. Apparently the Wii's favorite numbers are 1 and 11.

CoD4 on the PC, a bit of World of Warcraft, some Star Wars: Battlefront 2 on the Ps2, a very small helping of Ace Combat 4, and right now: Brawl.

Best Games of the Week ever! Excellent intro by Sterling and it just got better from there. Way to start and end strong!

I've been finishing Call of Juarez and all I can say is 'meh'. I went back to Crackdown and have been having fun co-oping that. I've also gotten in some Halo 3 (FNF and GRIFBALL!!).

Also, I just picked up Brawl even though I've never gotten into a Smash Bros game. I was pretty unimpressed... until I hopped online and played with some of the Dtoid IRC crew. Sure, we couldn't talk, but it was damn fun playing and taunting each other in IRC. My 'taunt' buttons are currently programmed to say "Eat penis!", "You smell pretty.", and "I want to taste you." I am Nintendo's worst nightmare.

Grifball. And Sharks. Halo 3 is still taking most of my gaming time, at least until GTA4. Also, no Brawl, because Nintendo hates me.

Is No Sleep IV: Shut up and fix IE bugs Gaiden as good as GamePro said it was? I've been meaning to try it out. 11/10, I hear.

I've been trying to get through the later levels of N (they're frigid bitches) and OMG I FREAKING LOVE AUDIOSURF. If you see me on Steam, it's me playing Audiosurf. A lot. OMG I FREAKING LOVE AUDIOSURF. I also played the Peggle demo, and I would've bought it, but I already made one purchase I shouldn't have, when I bought OMG AUDIOSURF.

Playing Brawl and awaiting my new Elite 360 coming in the mail.
I'm very disappointed with how much they're dumbed down Marth in Brawl. His recovery time has been reduced dramatically. Guess I just gotta get used to it. So far my top characters are Marth, Ike, and Lucas. Also, I've found Kirby to be quite better than his Melee version.

I haven't had much time to play with mid-terms and what not. Mostly Ikaruga, Progear, got to play Portal for about half an hour, a little bit of Raving Rabbids since I borrowed a Wii (and had to return it before Brawl, which I'm so glad is finally released so I can stop hearing about it), and I'll probably be returning to God Hand shortly.

Lost in the second round of the playoffs in NHL 08 (hopefully the Flames don't replicate that in real life), played some MLB 2K8 (I actually like it, but online is almost unplayable due to lag), and worked a bit more on the slowest ever completion of Half-Life 2.

My week went from totally shitty to totally awesome. Until Thursday...I was playing Yaris. (Expect a write-up as soon as I have time from playing my latest game.) Then, some Prey during FNF...which I quickly ditched and went to Halo 3. Then, I braved a blizzard and risked my life to get Super Smash Bros. Brawl! I'm so fucking happy.

Still messing around with DMC4, unlocking a couple of the "grinding" achievements. I am honestly surprised the game has captured my interest for this long, but it has. Hopefully, I can finish SoS this week and move on to DmD.

Also been playing Halo and getting very bored with it. I am praying the new Rainbow Six can satiate my FPS needs when it comes out next week.

TheToiletDuck wins this thread.

@akathatoneguy: I must be one of three people to own MLB 2K8 on PS3. I tried to play it online on Saturday evening, and while I eventually found two other people in the lobbies, I couldn’t connect to any of them to start a game. But lag? Really? Just another thing to add to the “bad” column in my notes on the game.

As my 360 is currently on its way to germany to get deRRoDed, I've been putting some time back into my trusty old PS2. Played about 20 hours of FFXII which has the most confusing plot in anything ever, compounded by the fact that on top of having to memorise hundreds of different names, there are several hour gaps between cutscenes full of killing shit, so you forget everything you've been told. How and why exactly did I end up joining the resistance anyway? Also, finally got around to beating god of war. That hades level where you have to climb the spinny blade towers can fuck itself.
