Games of the Week: B-52's edition

11:00 PM on 01.30.2011 // Conrad Zimmerman

This is the most terrifying dream I think you can ever have. And I actually like the B-52s.

As with every week, the staff at Destructoid has played a few videogames. We like to put together this little thing where we talk about the games we played in the previous week and solicit responses from the community. So, without further ado, here's what we've been up to.

Bennett, H.: Well it has pretty much only been Dance Central around these parts. I've been dragging my ass in and out of work so much this week that I have hardly had time to play anything. Also, House is still sucking up any other free time I have.

Sterling: Two Worlds II has taken over my life. The review is still coming, but it went from "This is barely better than the original" to "Actually, this is okay" to, "Fuck it, I actually kind of love this thing." It takes work to get to the "love" stage, but once you're there, it is its own reward. Already one of the biggest surprises of the year.

Also played plenty of Killzone 3. Beat it on the hard difficulty, but I am wavering on whether Elite is worth my time, as Killzone's Elite modes just aren't fun. Also, the online ... it is ... HNNNNNNG!

Finally, I have been playing Dead Space on the iPhone. Like many iOS games, the controls need some getting used to, but once they're nailed, it's a superb, ambitious little title. I recommend it for all series fans, and a review of that will be coming soon.

Bennett, C.: Just started 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors for DS and I am loving it. Also I got to play the demo of Catherine this week (YAY) and it really did live up to my expectations. The animation looks top notch, and while many were concerned about the gameplay not being fun, I liked it -- it's got a puzzler feel with stress added in. The trailer at the end of the demo really shows this is a Persona Team game through and through, and I cannot wait to play it in English. Come on and localize, Atlus USA!

Holmes: Been really busy making animations for the next Constructoid (frame by frame animation 4 EVA), so when it comes gaming, I've only had time for work related stuff like Okamiden, which I'm playing for review.

It's start off really slow. The first hour only has two fights, and they are strictly strategy free, button mashing affairs. After you get to the first dungeon though, it gets pretty awesome.

Chester: Rocked a lot of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 this weekend, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, and trying to beat my wife's scores in Fruit Ninja. Working on finishing up the excellent Dead Space 2, as well -- I've been on Chapter 11 for like two weeks because I've been so busy. But I'm getting close!

Also noted that Chad's sent me a few messages on Xbox Live reporting that he beat a few of my Pinball FX 2 scores, so I guess I'll be playing that tonight!

Devore: After weeks of trying, Maurice and I finally beat Dawn of War II's Last Stand mode. My proudest gaming moment in years, possibly ever. Also finished up Dead Space 2 this week -- loved essentially everything about it, especially the ending -- and jumped right into new game+. SO GOOD.

Long: Played some Dead Space 1 and 2. Tried out the Bulletstorm demo. Max and I went head to head at Raskulls at which point I realized I'm terrible at Raskulls. (Adorable game, though!) Also played some Nail'd, NFS Hot Pursuit, Burnout: Paradise City, and tried to play Gears of War but had to shut it off after 5 minutes because I was so bored. Not for me.

Toletino: I tried putting on some Dead Space in the hopes of finishing it because some people told me interesting things were unlocked for players with a clear save of that when they played Dead Space 2. Now, the first Dead Space was never very scary to begin with, and after playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent, it's about as frightening to me as this. For what it's worth, Dead Space's shooting is a lot better than Amnesia's, which has no shooting whatsoever.

I've also been toying around with a pre-beta preview build of Total War: Shogun 2. I'm not in a position to say if the AI's been radically improved yet, but a lot of the other parts of the game are. Plus, it's quite pretty.

Concelmo: For reasons I can't really explain, I played through Saw for the Xbox 360. With all these new great games out (LittleBigPlanet 2, Dead Space 2, Ghost Trick, etc.), and me finally having time to play videogames after an inexplicable three week hiatus, I decide to dive back in to an old, completely mediocre survival horror game. It makes no sense. Seriously, I have no idea what I was thinking.

But I finished it (even weirder!), so I think I am back on track. Dead Space 2 and Ghost Trick here I come!

Also beat a bunch of my friends' scores in Pinball FX 2. Good luck on some of those tables, Nick. Good luck ... <maniacal laughter>

Zimmerman: I actually rather enjoyed Saw on the 360. As licensed games go, it was evident that there was some love for the franchise and it actually convinced me to give the films a chance.

Dead Space 2 has been occupying my free gaming time and I'm enjoying it. I'm not loving it, but there are some really great new additions to that game. I especially like the Necromophs that try to sneak up on you using cover. If Jurassic Park were made into an action game today, that's what I expect an encounter with velociraptors to be like: Awesome. I think I'm just a little bit burned by one of the areas of the game.

I also finished Killer 7 on Backlog, which was just as weird as you would imagine it to be.

Spiel was mightily expensive. Holy shit... Good thing I didn't bring more money with me, too. Saw enough stuff I'd love to own.

Trialling PS Now - review to come later - has reminded me of a piece of little-reported PS3 news. Owners of hacked PS3s could turn any PS2 game into a 'Classics' title and run them on a bog-standard PS3 with few issues.

I caught a reflective mumbling about MGSV's open structure and how it doesn't sit well with me, to be published whenever I litter it with images.

I cracked and bought Final Fantasy Dimensions on Android last night. Half off sounded like just the right price, though I wish this came out on 3DS or even the Vita but at least it gives me something to do on the porcelain throne!

Heading off to Spiel in a bit. A whole lot of games there, just of the cardboard variety. I love me some board games.

Finally finished The Witcher 3. Definitely one of the best games I've played in my 30 years or so of gaming. Now onward to Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain.

MGS Online Day 3. I have 3 character up to level 10 now, one in each class. They're all pretty handy, but I do miss the scout's mark speed the most on other classes.

The SW: Battlefront is pretty and has great sound design, but the gameplay is so shallow and has seemingly no depth! If the full game is like this I will be disappointed.

Dear Playboy: Love your video game coverage, but how about you start making some topless unboxing videos? Seeing someone unwrap a copy of Call of Duty is boring. Seeing a topless Playmate unwrap a copy of anything is awesome!
