Games coming to the Kindle, development kit hits photo

Amazon is opening up its publishing platform starting this afternoon with the newly-announced Kindle Development Kit. According to the official word, potential publishers will be able to build "active content" and put it on the Kindle -- and yes, this includes games.

One of the examples of publishers in the press release is Sonic Boom, who are "building word games and puzzles" using the KDK. EA Mobile is also signed up to do some work with it.

We're not sure if we'll be playing something as hip as R-Type on electronic paper in the near future, or if a digital books device that doesn't have backlighting turns out to be the brightest device to put a game on, but we'll keep our eyes on KDK and its developers. Until then, keep reading. Because that's what the Kindle is meant to be about.

I wouldn't get too excited, e-ink's refresh rate would make your eyes bleed if you played anything that needed to move.

As a Kindle owner, I don't see how games will work. Slow page refresh is slooooooow.

That Kindle D pad is a thumb murderer. I'm sure crossword puzzles and Suduku will work just fine, but anything more intesive than that won't work out too well.

Now if they just add a music player it will be as good as the R4DS I bought for my DSLite 4 years ago.

R4DS: It only does everything.

It doesn't already have sudoku?? I thought that was pretty much basic on digital devices now.

as of right now, the Kindle is an e-reader, can play mp3s, and has a VERY rudimentary web browser.

No games as of yet, unless I missed something.

I, for one, am ready to play Zork on my e-reader.

And since I have a Nook, someone may already be working on it. :P

This will likely be similar to the games on Texas Instruments calculators, except not as fun because I won't be in Geometry while I play it.

Kindles are really awesome devices. This'll be a minor feature I'm sure, but the concept is cool.

I still don't want one though, I like my books on my shelves.

Games with a frame refresh every two seconds will be awesome. AWESOME.

Awesome! I just ordered one of these things for the books, and now it'll have games too? Neat-o.
