Games are an evil military conspiracy, claims researchers photo

Hating videogames in Germany has always been popular, but it's become a downright fashion statement ever since Tim Kretschmer's school shooting. Busybodies have been rubbing their hands with glee and condemning the so-called "killer games" with a passion, but the recent claim that videogames are a sinister Pentagon conspiracy truly takes the cake.

"During the nineties the killing simulators, employed for hand-to-hand combat in the US army and police, were released by the Pentagon to be sold for private use on the public markets," claims German researchers Renate and Rudi Hänsel. "As a consequence the computer and video game industry that had co-operated with the Pentagon from the very beginning, boomed. Since then the so-called killer games have wreaked havoc among children and youths.

"The US army’s electronic training programs for killing people must be taken back to the US barracks, where they came from. They have to disappear from civil society altogether. They may be appropriate for the purpose of national defense or fight against crime; they have no place, however, in children’s rooms or in living rooms."

That is ... amazing. Simply amazing. The researchers want violent games banished from society because they believe that the videogame industry knowingly co-operates with the Pentagon to create havoc-wreaking killing simulators that are destroying the minds of children. That, my friends, is how you argue a case against games.

I'm sure they'll be taken very seriously by the world.

Are they trying to place the blame of all vaguely videogame violence on the America's Army series or are they just plain nutjob conspiracy theorists (or money making cynics?)? Either way holy fuck Germany needs to put things in perspective a bit.

Simply disgusting. They say games are bad and evil when the supposed reaserchers themselves concoct laughable theories which lead people astray and give a negative, damaging view of gaming, a tool that can, and has, be used to edutcate childeren and people.

At least a theory as outlandish as this will not be taken that seriously, but I feel sorry for the poor people that wil fall victim to believing it. I hope this theory gets shot down as quickly as possible.

The only killing I'll do is a killer singing solo on Baba O'Reiley on Rock Band.

Or Killer Queen on Singstar.

Or the Killers.

Or Bikini Kill's Rebel Girl.

art imitates life. games unfortunately have become art. life has guns, violence, fear, crazy and sorrow. i can get a sense of these things in games, but only because i experience them wholly in real life. ban real life.

I think the laziness of that claim is actually more annoyingly pathetic than the claim itself. Gaming started in the 70s and boomed in the 80s. I don't think any sort of legitimate military involvement started until the current decade under the deviously stealthy title "America's Army".

I WISH that video games can train people to be a lean mean killing machine. Cause that would be fucking awesome. Of course that's not going to happen. These moral guardians have obviously not played a video game considering the absurdity of their statements. If what these politicians are saying are true, then we have tens of millions of children that are military grade elite soldiers capable of sniping a mouse's penis at 2 miles.

It's definitely classy compared to Jack Thompson. This takes the cake in terms of fantasy storytelling.

I'm willing to bet there is an ounce of truth buried in there somewhere. Of course if you were building a New World Order and wanted to condition people to embrace war, violence and post apocalyptic scenarios video games would be an effective way to do it. We should at least be open to the possibility that there might be a larger agenda behind the mountain of war games heaped on top of gamers each year.

In defense of Germany, this is only the opinion of a few. My experience of Germany is of a really, really cool younger generation, who have an absolutley awesome appreciation of the underground (and I don't mean London's wonderful network of tube trains). Berlin is a fucking awesome city, with one of the friendliest, but 'ardcore scenes around.
But that comment is dumb beyond belief. Mind you, if there is one country who knows the perils of a nation-wide take up of evil-acts, it'll be Germany.
