Gamers petition Valve for Counter-Strike 2 photo

For once a group of Valve fans have banded together, and it's not over a stupid cause. The legendary Counter-Strike has managed to stand the test of time for a billion years, and is still one of the best known PC shooters around. That said, fans are ready for more. They want a sequel, and they want one now!

Sam England has organized fans into a 25,000-strong army with plans to get Valve's attention. As well as an official response from Valve, the group wants to see the announcement of Counter-Strike 2. While a new and updated game would be great, the main goal is simply to make people play Counter-Strike again.

"We want to bolster interest in CS so more people play it, and if we want to regain mainstream attention in the game it needs to be re released as Counterstrike 2. Even if it was just re released with some fixes/patches, additional official maps, a graphical upgrade and a new shiny box ... Counterstrike would then survive as a franchise and become popular once again."

England laments that there is "No longer a single iconic game on the PC," and who knows? Maybe Counter-Strike 2 could be that game. Would you bust your nut over a new Counter-Strike or do you feel the world has moved on?

Oh boy a petition! That'll show em' that we won't rest until we get a sequel to a videogame! Just like all the other petitions...that...didn't...work.

I dunno how successful it would be in regaining mainstream popularity but this idea excites me. I've never played Counter-Strike but watching Valva fans gush over a long waited sequel is always cute.

I don't understand why anything would take precedence over Half-Life 3.

I'm not a big CS fan. Although I would welcome an FPS with realistic blood and gore.

I still hop on Source and 1.6 every now and then and play for a while. I would definitely be in to a new Counter Strike.

Uhhh why are they petitioning for this?

They already announced that they were working on developing a sequel to counter strike a couple of months back on x-play

Personally I think Counter Stike is kind of old and pretty dumb anyways. It was cool in 97-98 (whenever it came out) much in the same way the first versions of doom were cool. It's stale and old now, and very very basic.

I won't be interested in the game unless they improve the horrid community.

I'll damn well run with a weapon other than my knife thank you very much, and I am not a n00b for doing so.

Edit: Not X-play, it was whatever game show that they show on Spike TV (it's game trailers TV now, but it was something else).

As much as I hate to say it, but when most people think pc games, I'd bet they first think about crysis. So that would be pretty iconic.

Well considering that CS:S's engine isn't significantly worse than the current Source engine, apart from a few flashy effects here and there, coupled with the fact that a lot of people still play 1.6... this would just be a waste of Valve's time.

why does cs need a sequel??? how can there be a sequel??? cs coninues to remain popular due to its formula, community and mods like zombie, prison break and other custom addons. What do these fans want to see in cs 2? some kind of narrative and an attampt at a plot to explain just why the ct's and terrorists are locked in a perpetual, eternal conflict. cs is the punk rock of pc shooters, 3 minutes long fast paced matches, with relatively straight foward gamplay. I think that formuala reached saturtion point ages ago. If i want to play something deeper ill play battlefield or quake wars. these idiots that signed the petition probably signed the petition for episode 3 as well

Matter of opinion, I play just fine with a controller. My point being that the Xbox version of Counter Strike was fairly poor. I'd like to see a good version of the game, control bits aside.

Maybe if every server didn't download 20 maps/audio pieces/weird-random-other-stuff (that I don't care about), I'd be willing to play CS:S in its pure form again. Until then, it's pretty much been bombarded with shit that's actually detrimental to the quality of the game.

It's funny how PC gamers go on and on about the modding aspect of games, but I can think of more than just a few cases where that's actually a terrible thing.

I would be ALL OVER THIS. I loved CS and spent the better part of this decade playing it. Hell, I still play it occasionally. Episode 3 needs to happen first, but this would be a welcome upgrade over source, which is, for lack of a better descriptor, stale an long forgotten by valve. We haven't seen official maps since Source came out.

Unfortunately, I don't have a gaming PC anymore.

However, if they could make a mouse/keyboard-ready Counter-Strike 2 for the PS3, complete with all the classic maps it had...

Holy crap. I'd never leave the house. God, I loved Counter-Strike back in the day.

Wasn't Counter-Strike originally a Half-Life/Source mod in the first place? Why petition Valve when the community could just develop another themselves?

Sure, why not - I'd play it. I've put a ridiculous number of hours into 1.6 and source.

I don't think there will be another CS game until HL3, with a brand new engine, though.

@ Waquan
I agree about the server-side audio crap being annoying.

The custom maps, however? As long as you know where to find good ones (and there used to be places dedicated to finding the best CS maps), they are incredible. Better than the retail maps in many cases.

I don't know about this not being a stupid cause. Telling a developer that clearly chooses to make games based on how good their ideas are what to do is a pretty damn dumb cause to me.

man its been so long since i've played CS:S. i would kill for a counter-strike 2.

however, i kinda also wish counter-strike would be re-imagined on the ps3 and 360. which kinda defeats the purpose of this petition. i generally only buy valve games on the PC but with all the problems i've been having lately with games not wanting to work anymore, random crashes, ect. i just have started playing more games on consoles just for the solid experience.

Pretty sure they didn't announce CSS2 on that episode. They stated in the preview new info, and all it was, was Gabe saying that they were not working on it at that time.

Just sayin, I'm way past the whole "calling people queer like I'm a badass but I'm not a badass at all" phase. Maybe that's why, I dunno, your community died you jackass(es).

This is a bit of a ridiculous time to make a petition. On January 31st, Counter-Strike Pro Mod comes out. To many players, Source was a giant flop, and Pro Mod hopes to bring Source into a more competitive, 1.6 light. If you haven't heard of it, check it out.

@X3Ent3nte Fans probably want to see a game that valve actually updates. All those things you have mentioned are community mods, that has nothing to do with the essentials of the original game. There are so many things wrong with Counter Strike:Source, but valve never cared to update it. These people that made a petition, probably want a game that gets the treatment other games get when there is a bug or glitch, it actually gets updated and fixed. What a concept right?

But it's nice to see a petition that is not about some bullshit. At least they just want to play a good game.

@Operative20: Most of those petitions we've seen fail recently are for sequels or games not to be made. This is for a game to be made. Really though, why Counter-Strike? I would rather have Portal 2 then CS 2.

I loved CS and currently love CS:S. Counter strike is always that one game that I fall back to when I get bored with the others.

I hope they release CS2 and HL2:Ep3 in one pack, maybe with portal 2 in Orange Box 2 or something. They could do it and pc gamers everywhere with sense would bust a nut for sure
