Gameloft mad at EA for iPhone holiday sale photo

Mobile gaming powerhouse Gameloft is not happy with Electronic Arts, criticizing the publisher for its holiday iOS sale, in which a huge amount of games were offered for a measly $0.99 apiece. According to Gameloft head Michael Guillemot, such a sale threatens innovation and makes it hard for smaller titles to compete.

"There is a high uncertainty for the future anytime somebody can steal the market at Christmas," he states, adding that it will lead to a "good enough" attitude where developers rush games out of the door for a quick 99 cents, rather than develop a better title that costs more money.

Frankly, as much as I respect Gameloft, this guy is talking out of his ass. I've argued for a long time that major publishers need to start charging less for their games, because iPhone gamers generally don't want a lot of $10 titles. Guillemot acts as if the iPhone top ten chart hasn't always been full of $0.99 games, when it nearly always has.

Indie developers have been competing just fine with their dollar games. The fact that EA reduced so many prices to a buck only tells me that the publisher is finally starting to "get" what mobile gaming is about. EA isn't changing the market -- it's fitting into it.

I'm a fan of cheap games no matter what form they take. Indie or big publisher.

Well, he's right. The big publishers are pushing out the indie developers, just like they've been doing in the retail space for years now. And the iPhone market really does promote making games on a rock-bottom budget to hit the $0.99 price point. So I haven't seen anything that he said that was wrong, but complaining about it doesn't accomplish much either.

Also shouldn't he eat his own words regarding innovation when Gameloft is releasing this game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btKg02n1ulc&feature=player_embedded

Basically a rip-off of Modern Warfare. Although the name itself juxtaposes itself with a name like Modern Combat: Domination... Wonder if I have heard anything like it?

Gameloft rips off big name games for money.

EA makes original titles and manages to corner the market.

Are you kidding me?

Gameloft's games are great but the developer needs to stop complaining. It's economics. You lower the price for a game, people purchase more of it. What's the big deal? Does Gameloft criticize Steam for slashing prices on games during the Summer and Holiday season?

I'd struggle to pay 99 cents for an iPhone, let alone an iPhone game.

I'm developing an App Store game right now, and I wouldn't dream of charging over 59p/99 cents.

Gameloft? Gameloft? The maker of games like Modern Combat and StarFront?
I am sorry, but given your track record in the mobile market, you are neither small nor innovative; So stop posing as an indepent developer and crying about EA giving you some competition...

Hey Gameloft, remember when you put Block Breaker Deluxe 2 on the App Store for free? Yeah, I got it then. And hey, the demo of the very same game is apparently on my ages-old phone! So yeah.

Ah, that's all PopCap ever did, was rip-off other peoples games and look at them now. Everyone loves them for their new innovative games. So maybe in 5 years time, GameLoft might find some originality, and creativety as well. You never know!

"Gameloft" and "innovation" do not go together.

More cheap games FTW! Go EA! Gameloft is just upset that EA did better than they did this past holiday. Crybabies.

Wow, forgot Gameloft was even having a holiday sale, not that I would of picked up any of their games... Picking up Bad Company 2, NFS, and Mirror's Edge was an easy decision at 99 cents per.

Gameloft can get buggered. I love their games but they talk as though they own the idevices and they alone have the right to publish cheap games for them.

If EA had released a game on xbl indie Market the devs would perhaps have a right to grumble as that's a dedicated to small devs/teams but gamelofts moaning is unwarranted.

If course they could also be pisses because EA had actually done a pretty spiffing job on their iPhone adaptations of console games.

As I said I like Gameloft games but it seems to menthey didn't quite make as much money as they wanted so their lashing out at the big dogs.

EA's iPhone games have made me respect them more. They don't overcharge, they support independent developers (such as the developers of Auditorium), and they've released some really great games. I love that they're willing to put so many of their games on sale. It may just be a stunt to get more money, but it's the kind that makes everybody happy.

I think that this guy should realize that it might be easier to sell 1 million+ copies for .99 then it is to sell it for 2.99

So Gameloft is angrt at EA for selling shitty iPhone games for 99 cents? Well, Gameloft sells a lot of shitty iPhone games for more than $2, so fuck off Gameloft and your shitty games that blatantly rip off recgonizable game franchises.
