Quantcast

Bad breakups have caused some of the most awkward and terrifying situations in my life. One of the worst involved a girl who just couldn’t let it go. She would call my phone every 20 minutes, bring her car to a crawl in front of my house, and pelt my window with rocks during the evening hours. GameFly reminds me of this girl.

Earlier last year, I cancelled my GameFly subscription. I felt that there wasn’t enough reciprocity in our relationship. I would pay GameFly to send me a few new games every month. GameFly sent me games grudgingly, often months later than what I originally expected. This wasn’t working out for me, so I dumped the service. Like psycho girl, it has been pelting my window ever since.

This morning I received an e-mail about free flash games and it reminded me of our short gallop together. Other e-mails are more direct, pleading and pulling me to come back with the promise of cheaper rates and faster shipping. Will I take it back? I don’t know.

Do many of you use GameFly? Do they get new titles to you any faster than before? Can you rely on the service for your gaming needs? I’ve been missing GameFly, but I need to know that it’s there for me when I need it.

[UPDATE: It has come to my attention that Minus World feels the same way that I do about GameFly. In an August, 2008 article titled "WORLD LAW: GameFly Needs To Quit Acting Like A Psycho Ex-Girlfriend" the writer ("agent b") recalled his relationship with GameFly in much the same terms. He used the phrase "Psycho Ex-Girlfriend" to describe GameFly's incessant e-mails and made the comparison to phone calls as I did.

I obviously didn't know about this article before I crafted mine this morning, but it bears mentioning considering that our two stories deal with similar subject matter.]

I had a free GameFly trial last year. I used it to check out Ninja Five-O and Electroplankton. It was very good for those purposes and only took a couple days to ship those games out.

There weren't enough new games for the Wii that I wanted to check out.

I sent in a game two weeks ago and they claim I sent in only the mailer. I know I didn't and they are probably gonna try to charge me and if they do i'm gonna cancel.

@EternalDarkWing:

And not all of us frequent the forums. There's nothing wrong with posting such a question here as far as I'm concerned.

Actually, I'm glad this question was asked. I just rented some games for the first time from Blockbuster last night. Not too bad on a rent-one-get-one-free, but that's still $8 for five nights for three games. I've been considering GameFly but always questioned the value. Considering GameFly is $22 for two games as long as I want, that's certainly a better deal.

I'm interested to see how others have fared with GameFly as well.

I had a store credit at Office Depot...looked on their website and to my suprise they had halo 3...I picked it up as i have no need for office supplies...

Anyhow about 1 year after purchase i got a call from them asking why I had not bought anything in so long...they offered discounts and my own personal shopper assistant...since then i have had one other call (same deal) and a 700 page catalog delivered to my house...cracks me up, but if I was in the market I would go there becasue i have a personal assistant there :)

Me and my roommate split a gamefly account, each of us has 1 game. We both love it, hes been a member for about 2 years I think, and I've been a member for a year now. If the game is in stock it usually takes around 5 days for a turnaround of a game (2 days to get to them, 1 day for them to get it out, 2 days to get back) Which for me is fine cause I usually have 1 or two other games I'm working on. It allows me to play brand new games without spending 60 bucks on them, I usually keep my games for a month or so, beat them, and send them back.

I switched from Gamefly to Gamerang. For me, I got a games a lot faster and rarely had trouble with new releases. Just make sure they have a shipping center near you.

I love gamefly - I get new releases shipped to me as soon as they come out. You just have to know how to work their queuing system. Keep a pool of one game available right before the game releases, and it will get sent when it comes out. If you don't do it that way, forget about getting the specific title you want.

I personally avoid GameFly because I have a collector's mentality: I'd prefer to buy and own any game that I think would be worth me playing, so renting games isn't that good an option. That being said, I have a few friends who use GameFly all the time and seem very happy with it. I don't know the specifics, though.

Also, I see nothing wrong with this post. Similar things may happen in the forums, but I think seeing an editor rant about something like this brings some additional personality to the front page.

I love gamefly too. I have an extra advantage, since they have a shipping center where I live. It usually takes about 3-4 days after dropping a game in the mail bin, to get another in my hands

"If you don't frequent the forums you are missing out on shit exactly the same as this. If you like this topic, visit the forums. You know why? Because this shit belongs in the forums along with 1/2 of Brad's "news"."

Yeah, considering the above attitude is what some of the writers have to deal with from several of the forum users, I don't know why Brad would feel encouraged to post there.

That's not taking into account the fact that I think Brad knows his own job description. This is something he even ran by a number of staffers and we all agreed it would be nice to have on the frontpage.

A fair few people have been complaining lately at there being "too much news" on this blog. This was a genuine, non-threatening attempt to get some nice discussion going on the frontpage. Let's not be twats about it.

@everyone - It seems to me that the service has improved since I've had it. One of the e-mails I've received told me about a new facility that opened up but I wasn't quite sure if that would translate into less waiting times.

I tried gamefly a while ago and didn't like how long the turnaround is. For those of you who consider a 3-4 day turnaround GOOD then you are fooling yourself. As long as I don't drop it in the mail on the weekend or over a holiday when I use something like Netflix the turnaround is 2 days in the mail Monday on my doorstep with the days mail delivery by Wednesday. Frankly until Gamefly can get turnaround that quickly I'm not going back.

I was actually thinking this is a great forum post too. :)

Which is fine. I think breaking these sort of things out into the front page does go a little way into starting discussions, more so maybe to that the forums.

That said, perhaps a highlight of the forums in this article, or maybe even a regular forum recap/highlight post would help with forum usage.

On Topic: I'd definitely try them again. They work veyr well for me, aside from getting my hands on games that are anything but "Available Now". Since I've gone through most of the easily accessible games, I'm looking forward to a new year of Game Fly Q lucky pulls.

Also, Gamefly discounts are better, it seems to me, than GameStop's. I got Saints Row 2 as a Keep It title, during release week, for like $40

Yeah, my dad gets 1-2 day turn around on Netflix. I'd definitely want a quicker turnaround, but the 3-4 day is bearable for me, considering I've got plenty o' games I enjoy aside from rentals.

Worth Noting: they do regular email surveys on how long it took for x- game to get to them from when you sent it back. For what its worth, they are acting like they're addressing the issue.

I really feel the worth of a gamefly subscription is largely tied to what genres you like. For instance, if you like FPS games, I think it would be suitable. You can blow threw a 15hr. single player campaign, return the disk, and repeat. However, if you're into RPGs, the 30-100hrs. you're likely to put into some of those games will likely make it more economical to simply buy the games you want and play them piecemeal over time. This is by no means the final word on the service, but I think it draws attention to something that's been a relevant consideration of mine when assessing my own subscription.

I think this is a great discussion/front page topic. I have a random question, Brad and Jim. If I have some juicy news I find from time to time, is there any way I could send it your way? I'd like to contribute and as I'm scouring the web I find a bunch of stuff you guys could use.

On topic - Gamefly is great. I really want to give the Blockbuster Game pass a try though. For basically the same price, you can go to your local store and just trade the games in. I believe you can just go in the morning, beat a game then get another one that night. That sounds amazing.

@ eternalplayer2345

I really enjoy my gamefly account. There are issues though - I live in Southwestern CT, the closest shipping facility is in PA, so not so far eh? It takes 2 days to get there and 2 days back. Which is about a 1-2 day improvement over what it was a year and a half ago.

So the speed is......ok...not good, not terrible. Netflix(which i also subscribe to) gets there in 1 day and the next day its in my mailbox(they're also closer).

Really...I love the service, I get to play tons of games and not have to shell out the $ for em...I wouldn't have anyway, but atleast I get to play em, ya know?

I liked that fact that i can purchase games. I bought gears 2 at a reduced price because ive been a member so long. $45 for gears 2. not bad eh? I recommend it to anyone who can get their games within 4 days.

and Jim, the more stories the better if you ask me. You keep me entertained at my many times boring IT job.

One more thing about Gamefly, I want to note a post above, with the Queue system. If gamefly is soposed to ship u a game, and you have a brand new game at the top of your queue and nothing else, it will be sent immediatly, sometimes its shipped the day before release so u get it on the day or the day after release. BUT, if you try to get a new game after release....ur kinda screwed to wait quite a while.

@The Forum Talk

'Twas a joke. On the topic at hand, I have been using GameFly for well over a year. Things were really iffy when I signed up because they only had a shipping center in California. I'm in New Jersey and games were taking forever to make the rounds. Once they opened up their shipping center in Pennsylvania, all of the problems I had disappeared. I have a 2 game plan and I always make sure I have at least new game to play while the other is in transit. The turnaround times are a lot better than they used to be and I've never had a mailing problem. (Other than the time where I somehow got a free copy of Earth Defense Force 2017, but I would hardly call that a problem.)

If you're on the fence about getting back with GameFly, I would recommend them to you again. They have gotten a lot bettter with their service and as long as there is a shipping center relatively close to you, you'll be fine.

I recently subscribed to Gamefly...been using them for about 2 months. I live in Arkansas and I had two games arrive within 2 DAYS of me sending off 2 previous games. They have a warehouse in Austin, so that might explain the speed.

Just sent out two games yesterday, and according to my que they have already shipped out the two replacements.

I am shocked and awed.

As for use, I tend to gravitate between RPGs and shooters. I have a 2 out account, so I'll hold on to a RPG for a while, but switch out the other game as required.

$22 a month...so I figure that I would have to hold on to a RPG for a little over 5 months (1/2 of the subscription cost...remember, I'm switching out the other game constantly, so God only knows how much I'm saving, there) to equal the purchase price of a new game, and by then I've gone through the average RPG at least once or twice.

I love it, and have used it for over a year now. I've actually been able to score a lot of new games on the cheap, too, most brand new titles within the $40 range. It really beats paying full retail for all of the games that I want to try out.

They JUST got us Prince of Persia, a good while after we put it in the GameQ. So if that's faster than what you're used to, I can't IMAGINE how they used to suck.

GameFly, I think, is a better alternative for people who want to revisit old titles extensively or who don't mind waiting a little while for newer ones.

I'm in a shipping city, so 1 day there and 1 day back service. Pretty easy to get new releases provided I send a game back 2 days before the game comes out.

So I love them. I didn't love them before when the games had to ship from Cali.

They're usually pretty slow on new titles, but it's great for playing old ones. The turn-around sucks (at least in South Carolina where the closest GameFly center is Tampa). Also it beats the hell out of paying $60 for an 8 hour game you'll play once.

@John B and All:

FYI

Get this, the 5 day thing at Blockbuster is just to get you to bring it back and scare you..but the real deal is you get ten days from the due date to return before you get any fees. If you keep it past then you get charged full price, but as long as that gets returned within thirty days you only get charged a dollar and the money goes back on your credit card.

Not bad for short games you are going to blow through or if you don't care about multiplayer (I don't usually)

I have to be the dissenting opinion here and say that I was not all that pleased with my Gamefly experience recently. At one point, I had 14 games in my queue, and sure, 12 were "low" availability and two were "medium", but I still waited a full week before they sent anything out. By GF's own descriptions, "low" availability games have a 25% chance of going out on any given day. How could I have a 25% chance of getting 12 different games (and 50% for two others) for seven consecutive days before actually getting anything sent to me?

GF is definitely a better alternative than high-priced game rentals somewhere else, but for me it just didn't make sense. I will probably re-start my membership this summer when there's a game drought and I get a chance to rent some of the titles I missed from this fall/winter.

@ John Solgrim- A four game account? Really?!?!

Don't use gamefly if you want to play a new game within a relevant window. I started using it for games that were on the fence for me like "The Force Unleashed" and "Mirror's Edge," but the former took a good 2 weeks to ship.

When it's good it's good, when it's bad it's really annoying.

I was a big fan of GameFly for a long time, I signed up as soon as they started. But for the past few months, every time that I look at my queue, not a single title in there has a status of available now. It not like I have old or obscure stuff in there either, I usually have around 20 or 30 current/popular ones.

They used to be really good about sending my #1 pick right away including new titles the day they are released, but lately when they send me a game, it's like playing roulette... I never know which of those 30 title they might ship.

Gamefly sucks but I still subscribe. Gamefly will often send available titles far down your queue instead of new releases near the top. To get the most out of it you must remove every title listed as available to get a game released in the past month, otherwise they will consistently send you older titles farther down your queue. Also, don't be surprised if you have a week wait with no title if you have nothing listed as available. I often will have 20 titles in my queue and will have to wait 3-5 days for a title to ship. Definitely not near the turn around time of Netflix or Blockbuster's Total Access. I plan on quitting soon

I miss RedOctane's ol' mail rental system. Sure, it was years ago but the games came fast.

I'm really starting to get upset with Gamefly. They are now sending me a title that was #20. Between 1 and 20 there were two High Availablity Games and only 10 Low Availablity. I used to really enjoy it but now I'm considering other alternatives. A Blockbuster is extremely close to me but their game selection at the store sucks. A Hollywood Video is farther but usually has new games.

Any other good alternatives?

I had a gamefly account for over a year and it was pretty awesome. I would get all my games a day or two after shipped, although that could be because of where I live. It got to a point where I felt like I was wasting my parents money, I had tried out all of the best games and I ran out of decent games to rent and most games would just sit there untouched for a few days and get sent back. I cancelled, although regretfully as I'll miss the 10% off on the already low prices. Gamefly also harasses me with constant emails, and I'm always tempted to go back if I wasn't so busy with schoolwork. Gamefly pimped us, we got played :(
